The military has emplaced a system of operation that allows for the dissemination of information and the completion of tasks. This system is known as a Chain of Command. The Chain of Command is a structure that places one individual is in charge of a small piece of a much larger picture. Each individual places his or her piece into the puzzle completing the image for the top of the Chain of Command at their respected level. The Chain of Command was established to allow for easier completion of missions and tasks as well as to ensure that those tasks are completed in a timely manner. A Directed duty is a duty that is either orally or written given from a superior in a chain of command above the Non Commissioned Officer. These duties can range from being in charge of CQ, being the Non Commissioned Officer in charge (NCOIC) of a range, or any other additional duties that the Command group needs filled. Implied duties refer to the duties of Non commissioned Officers that are neither directed nor specified. Non Commissioned Officers also inform higher members of the Chain of Command of individual readiness and unit readiness for the completion of missions. These duties range from motivating individuals, providing directive or creating an optimal work environment. Non commissioned Officers’ responsibility depends on rank, duty position and willingness to accept a tasking. With out the chain of command there would be no real order in how we as a whole work. The purpose of the chain of command is to tell people what they can and cannot do. So why we as a grown adults follow the chain of command, it is simple we choose to because of the fact that we raised are right hand and said yes I will. The Civil War was very hard on families, causing most of them to sacrifice people in their families, most families had all of the young men in their family taken out of their jobs on farms and factories. This left the women and children to tend to the large farms and hold the weight of the house. Also, since the demand for supplies for the war increased it created more jobs for the people to fill which forced more people into labor. It also effected families personally, having their sons/brothers in war was constantly nerve racking and scary, every day they were constantly dreading receiving any news or letters, fearing the life of their family members.

Some instinctively motivate and empower their subordinates to think and act independently, thereby influencing actions during combat. However, those who understand the commanders' activities of mission command will influence not only subordinates, but the outcome of the battle as well.
