Counseling Theories
The three counseling theories that I chose to talk about are; Person centered therapy, which is where “People are essentially trustworthy, that they have a vast potential fir understanding themselves and resolving their own problems without direct intervention on the therapist’s part.” (Corey, 2013, p.174) The second is Behavior therapy which is where “Practitioners focus on directly observable behavior, current determinants of behavior, learning experiences that promote change, tailoring treatment strategies to individual clients, and rigorous assessment and evaluation.” (Corey, 2013, p.247) The last one is Family Systems Therapy and that can be described as; “Individuals are best understood

Carl Rogers introduced this theory, and it says that people are all around good people and have traits such as, being trustworthy; they understand themselves and can solve their own issues without the help of the therapist. This is a very important theory that changed psychotherapy because it was focused on the client for change instead of the therapist. The interesting thing about this theory is that when he introduced it to everyone, he didn’t introduce it as being set in stone, instead he left it open for others to critique and make even better. This approach is “Aimed toward the client achieving a greater degree of independence and integration.” (Corey, 2013, p.179) Instead of focusing on the issue that the client has at the moment, it focuses on helping them to figure them out and on the actual client. There is a understanding for therapists that the goals of the client need to be changed, but they aren’t always the same when deciding how that client specifically will change and improve upon them. Classical conditioning can be defined as something that can happen and we don’t personally experience it but see it on TV, then it can give others the fear to experience what they have. Operant Conditioning is where you do a certain behavior and get positive reinforcement for it and in most cases you will tend to do that same act again to gain more positive reinforcement. If there was nothing positive to come of the act, the chances of it being done again are lesser. This technique is used a lot in parent education programs and often with weight management. The social learning approach is where the person believes that they can take on the situation themselves and change whatever it is that needs to be changed without help from anyone else. My counseling theory is that even though human beings have the need for approval or longing of someone else to bring substantial meaning in their life, they are not by any means validated by any one person or situation because you focus on the present and future and make the most of your circumstance. I experienced that in my childhood every time I saw my mother and father arguing and later I would hear from her what exactly happened between them. I remember thinking to myself that why would someone stay in an abusive situation or at least not stand up for themselves. I concluded that she needed to be validated by the relationship and for her to leave the relationship or stand up for herself would mean to defy her husband, church, and God.
Today, the majority of counselors and therapists operate from an integrative standpoint; that is, they are open to “various ways of integrating diverse theories and techniques” (Corey, 2009b, p. 449). In fact, a survey in Psychotherapy Networker (2007) found that over 95% of respondents proclaimed to practice an integrative approach (cited in Corey, 2009b, p. 449). Corey (2009a; 2009b) explains that no one theory is comprehensive enough to attend to all aspects of the human – thought, feeling, and behavior. I believe counseling is a collaborative partnership between client and counselor. Furthermore, this collaborative partnership is built from trust and acceptance of both client and counselor. I hope in conjunction with clients to understand the issues and concerns so to help them tap into their wisdom, creativity, and strengths to meet their current challenges. I believe in a comprehensive perspective through which clients can better comprehend themselves in the framework that our thinking about events can lead to emotional and behavioral upset. Moreover, counselors are to provide a safe environment for clients to explore their challenges and identify ways to move differently in overcoming these challenges.
Values, Morals, and Beliefs are components that play a role in an individual’s self-identity. The establishment of these components shape human nature, behavior, and the development of an individual’s purpose. The basis of these fundamentals has contributed to my desire to become a counselor. This paper will discuss my views of human nature, factors of behavior changes, goals of therapy, the roles of a therapist, and the counseling approaches that I chose to incorporate in a practice.
As a counseling student, it is very important to formulate a counseling theory tailored to ones’ own personality and beliefs. A counselor may choose a single theory to model when practicing therapy or pick and choose components and techniques from various theories, otherwise known as eclecticism. No theory is considered right or wrong. Understanding the different therapeutic approaches are important to effective counseling, however, counselors must also understand their own personal value, view of human nature, human behavior, counseling techniques and the purpose and goals of counseling. Understanding these components along with the different theoretical approaches will provide the counselor with a 9 knowledge of their own counseling, orientation and is essential to not only the productivity of counseling but the growth of the counselor as well.
Earning a Master’s in Guidance and Counseling would be the ideal next step to fulfill my goals becoming a youth counselor. The program offered at The College of New Rochelle is a perfect match or my career and educational aspirations. I hope to refine my knowledge counseling therapies and techniques, learn more about disorders and associated symptoms, develop effective interviewing skills, and sharpen my ability to work as a professional in youth counseling.
This theory focuses on the integration of Biblical principles by combining several aspects of major theories to provide the best treatment for clients. This theory also discusses the nature and need of man as well as the most important factors in determining the health and/or dysfunction of man. This theory provides a detailed process of intervention based on several major theories, while using Scripture as a basis for each method. Overall, this theory focuses on the importance of the client’s role in therapy. Ultimately, through the combined theories and integration of Scripture, it is up to the client to apply these methods. This paper explores my counseling theory. It looks at the way I view human nature and the development of personality through the lens of an elementary school counselor. This paper looks at the development of psychopathology and the goals of therapy using fundamental cognitive behavioral theory (CBT) and techniques used in CBT and person centered therapy (PCT). Researched is used to advocate for my use of child center play therapy (CCPT) along with taking a look at reality therapy (RT) for use with the older elementary students . I conclude with a look at spiritual influences on my future counseling career. Throughout the paper I reference the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) and its national model to help tie in the theories and practices with the guidelines of being a school counselor.
Implementing and designing a comprehensive school-counseling program needs to ensure that they are meeting state standards as well as the ASCA National Model. Assessing the comprehensive school-counseling program allows school counselors consider how well they are meeting the needs of the students, and meeting the requirements of the ASCA National Model and state requirements. School counselors gain the ability to assess the effectiveness of the program and answer the question “How are students different as a result of the school counseling program” (Susan Ireland, M. ED., 2014, slide 1).
The theoretical orientation that best suites my personal style is a combination of both client-centered and brief therapy. In the first part of the paper, I try and describe the importance of developing a good client/therapist relationship using a client-centered approach. I like this approach the best because it helps the client to be more open and truthful with the therapist. There are several techniques that I find important in developing this bond such as: genuineness, unconditional positive regard, accurate empathy, and active listening. After building a relationship with the client, a therapist is now faced with identifying and solving a problem behavior. With this in mind, I found that the brief therapy method best fits my style.
It is imperative to study counseling theories when beginning field based work. Counseling theories provide a foundation to be able to learn and develop my own techniques. Some ideas that exemplify the significance of counseling theories are; research, application of theories, and case studies.
Classical conditioning is just one way, this type is the process of using conditioned stimuli to create a conditioned response from the unconditioned stimuli. In Brave New World, all caste members are conditioned to live in a certain climate, way to act towards or about something and how the World State wants to live their life. As they get to the age of being a kid they condition them with erotic play throughout their childhood, so later on in life they will take part of recreational sex later in life, to prove to the kids that everyone belongs to everyone. The third way of conditioning is through hypnopaedia, sleep- teaching, this technique was used to make people to like their work and social caste and to hate anything different and they teach citizens to do what is best for society. The definition of the Operant conditioning is the technique of conditioning that teaching people is based on consequences. Ego: In this second developmental stage, compromises in instinctive responses to environmental circumstances begin to develop. The ego mediates with the id by considering the rules of the real world and the consequences of actions taken in that world.
This quarter’s course of “theories of counseling” felt like a whirlwind of theories, theorist, therapeutic techniques, and proper application of theoretical framework to help counsel students. As the course continued each new theory and therapy style I learned about seemed more appealing and useful than the last. In deciding which therapy styles I would favor using I have to take into account the general demographic of the students and communities I wish to work in. I plan to work with middle school to high school students that are from urban low social economic status and are recent arrivals to the country. Some of the characteristics of obstacles these students and families face daily are, single parent home/income, past/recent trauma, history of low family education level and legal trouble. I am fortunate to live in the community and society I want to help and that I have grown up in. I am equally blessed to be raised and have the opportunity to give back to my community and society the best way I know how by giving back in a positive manner.
