Sultan Fateh Ali Khan Shahab commonly known as Tipu Sultan was the eldest son of Hyder Ali, ruler of the Indian state of Mysore. Born in 1750 and raised at Devanhalli, Tipu was trained in the art of warfare and from an early age of fifteen he accompanied his father on various campaigns. He is known as the ‘Tiger of Mysore’ for the reason that he was a renowned brave Indian war leader. Exceptional military genius, a powerful leader and a profound scholar, Tipu Sultan is a name which holds great importance in Indo-Pak history. Tipu Sultan, the ‘Tiger of Mysore’, without any doubt was the greatest leader of Indian sub-continent in the period when British arrived in India. He possessed great leadership qualities some of which are enumerated below:-

(a) A Skilled Tactician. A skilled tactician and innovator, Tipu Sultan embraced western methods to ensure that his forces could overwhelm his Indian rivals and match the British forces sent against him. He mastered rocket technology and became the first person to use rockets in India. These rockets were more advanced than those previously seen by the British, primarily because of the use of iron tubes for holding the propellant which enabled higher thrust and longer range for the missile (up to two km). Tipu Sultan was an innovator who introduced many new techniques. He was not only a ruler but also a well-known Hakeem (doctor), an engineer and also a wrestler. He made Mysore No 1 in silk industry.
