Do you know anyone who showed courage? I believe courage can be shown in many ways. One way to show courage is standing up for what you believe in, even if it is wrong. Another way to show courage is singing out loud, even if you are bad at it. More importantly, these people gave courage a new meaning. The three individuals who displayed courage were Tobymac, Martin Luther King Jr, and Rosa Parks because they all stood up for what is right two of them stood up for black rights and one stood up for his religion. Tobymac showed it by standing up for his religious beliefs; Martin Luther King Jr. by sticking up for African American rights. Tobymac shows a lot of courage in his everyday life. He showed courage when he released the song, “Get
One good example of courage is in Homer's epic poem, “The Odyssey,” when Odysseus enters the Cyclops’ cave. In the epic poem Odysseus and his men enter the Cyclops cave and the text states “We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield..." (Homer 157-158). This example demonstrates that Odysseus enters a Cyclops cave and is not fearful. Odysseus enters the cave because he sees treasure and wants to get it for him and his crew. Odysseus chooses to enter the cave even though he knew the cave was the Cyclops home and this demonstrates courage, and this is why the trait should be encouraged. Another good example of courage that sticks out is Newton Knight, who chooses to help slaves even though he lives in the south during the Civil War. In the Biography.com Editors’s article, “Newton Knight,” Knight chooses to stop fighting for the Confederate Army and goes back to his hometown to help slaves, as the text states “They saw themselves as defending the residents of Jones County from the Confederacy” (Biography.com Editors 1). Therefore, this example demonstrates that Knight chooses to fight against the Confederate Army even though he lives in Mississippi. It takes a lot of courage to go up against the Confederate Army even though he lived in the south and almost everyone was against him. It should
The conductors who contributed to the Underground Railroad sacrificed a great deal to help other slaves escape to freedom; that showed ample amounts of bravery. Martin Luther King Jr. stood by what he believed in to make a difference for this generation. He was remembered as a great man of bravery, he wanted change for blacks and whites to be equal. However, bravery does not come naturally to some people. To be brave means possessing or exhibiting courage or courageous endurance. Bravery is the ability to allow a person to be appearing bigger than the crisis. In James McBride’s novel, Song Yet Sung, he describes three characters that exemplify in bravery who
Courage by definition is the ability to do something that scares you. Courage is very bad. Courage is something some black people didn’t have back in the 1900s. Black people were scared to stand up for themselves. Melba had courage. Melba stood up for herself. Melba wanted to integrate Central High School.(page1). (page1-10). page(1-10).
Leaders, Achievers, Courage are only a few words that describe Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and Abraham Lincoln and what they achieved. Frederick Douglass was a very courageous man and leader because he stood up for what was right and he escaped slavery, For Example in the text it says “ The more I read , the more I was led to abhor and detest my enslavers”. What that sentence means is that he was reading a book about a slave and his master and the more he read the more he wanted to enslave all slaves. Sojourner Truth was a courageous leader. She stood up for what she thought was right and for her that was women rights and ending slavery. In fact, in the text is says “ Then that little man in black there, he says women can't have as much right as men, cause christ wasn't a women! Where did your Christ come from? Where did your Christ come from? From God and a women! Man had nothing to do with him. ANother sentence was “ Then they talk about this thing in the head;what’s this they call it? [Members of audience whispers “ Intellect”] That's it honey. What's that got to f with women rights or negroes rights. She would always stand up for what was right. Abraham Lincoln was a Achiever and a Courageous leader. He was the man that stopped slavery. It's Important to realize, that in the text it said “ My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still, My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will, The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and
Courage is doing what you know is the right thing even when it is hard to do. Jackie Robinson showed courage multiple I times throughout his career. In fact, his whole career would have gone down the drain if he did not have courage. As said in “Jackie Robinson All-Star” black men had little hope in the major leagues; Branch Rickey then came along and offered him a spot with the acceptance that he had to have the guts to NOT fight back. This meant that although Jackie was going to be taunted and humiliated he had to have the patience and courage to not retaliate so then he would give the whites a reason to respect black people. According to “The Noble Experiment”, this player had to be able to take abuse, name calling, rejections from both opponents and
Courage is conveyed through the characters’ actions in the book To Kill A Mockingbird and the movie The Help. Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird is a white, Southern lawyer in Maycomb County, Alabama. He adamantly defends Tom Robinson, a negro who had allegedly raped a white woman, even knowing that his prejudiced county would convict him. This exemplifies courage because a white man to seeking equality for a black man was not accepted in their time period, a place of extreme racial segregation. Yet, Atticus defended Tom already knowing that he will lose. In The
Courage is the ability for standing up for someone with strength and helping people when no one will. Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of thunder, Cassie faces discrimination she shows courage for standing up for blacks rights. Her family and all African Americans are treated unfairly because of the color of their skin. She stands up for her convictions and doesn’t change her convictions. She showed courage when she stood up to Mrs. Crocker, Lillian Jean, and Mr. Barnett at the mercantile. She had a lot of things that she didn’t understand at the time.
We all hope to have, and understand, the characteristics that an amazing leader possesses. There are many great leaders, spread throughout our history. Malcolm X, George Washington, and Martin Luther King Jr. are just a few people who were blessed with what it takes to step up and become true leaders. By example, some of the other fantastic qualities of leadership also make up two remarkable people: Nelson Mandela and Suleiman the Magnificent. They exhibited many leadership-like characteristics, like them being feared yet admired by their people, or people from other countries, or the fact that they were also very intelligent, and tactical.
How would the country be, without Jackie Robinson, Melba Beals, and Helen Keller? These 3 people, were major parts in American history. Jackie and Melba paved the way for African-Americans. While Helen Keller proved, that even without seeing and hearing and just willpower and heart, you can accomplish anything. Jackie Robinson, Melba Beals, and Helen Keller all proved, if you tried hard enough and persevered, you could do anything you dreamed of, and changed the country while doing it.
When a group of people get together, with the same wants and needs, they become so motivated that they will not be stopped by anyone to change what must be changed. Throughout the mid 1800’s, to the mid 1900’s, black men and women, along with white women, were all struggling to change what they believed was wrong. While white women and African Americans both struggled to have equality with white men. Historic leaders like Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Frederick Douglass, are only three people, but influenced an entire nation to help make a great changes.
America stands for equality, freedom, and choice, but upon looking into the history behind America the everlasting struggle of racism, bigotry, and inequality are revealed. Through the 1950s to the 1970s, the fight for civil rights by African Americans was prominent throughout America. Schools, restaurants, and all public facilities were segregated, African Americans were blocked from voting through literacy tests and poll taxes, and The KKK, a white supremacist group, would lynch African American men. The need for the immediate cease of these practices and the desire for equality gave way to the Civil Rights Movement. Leaders and groups arose from this movement, such as Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, and the Black Panther Party. The overall goal was to achieve rights but there were two significantly different methods of achieving this goal, non-violent civil disobedience and “black power”. The shift from non-violent civil disobedience to “black power” was caused by the emotional toll of being complacent during personal attack and the truth that immediate change calls upon the use of force, and the result of the shift was the further spread of violence.
Civil Rights- noun: the rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality. Nelson Mandela, Harriet Tubman, and Patrisse Cullors all share one common trait: civil rights and protecting the freedom of others. Nelson Mandela fought for freedom against the apartheid in South Africa, and was a philanthropist who served as President in South Africa. Harriet Tubman was abolitionist, armed scout and spy, who helped hundreds of slaves escape through the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. Patrisse Cullors is an activist and artist who co-founded of Black Lives Matter, an organization which campaigns against violence and systematic racial discrimination against black people. All of these strong-willed individuals enacted change
The Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal” (Jefferson). As the United States was built with an emphasis on equality for all citizens, it is increasingly pertinent to ensure that these values are retained. Throughout this country’s history, many conflicts regarding the ultimate equality of all citizens have resulted in the people themselves resisting restrictive laws. Protests, when peaceful, have always had a positive effect on retaining the freedoms promised by the Declaration of Independence. In order to pass on these values, American children are taught about those who chose to resist. Henry David Thoreau, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Susan B. Anthony are only a few of
The speaker of the first speech is John F. Kennedy, 35th president of the United States. President Kennedy was instrumental in improving relations with the USSR and improving civil rights in the US. He is seen as one of the greatest presidents America has ever had.
anyone else agree with that statement? Everyone is born with true bravery but it’s up to them if they will show it and a couple did. For example Atticus Finch and Martin Luther king jr, they both stood up for what they believe in and what was right. They never backed down they had the confidence to stand up and they did, stood tall and brave. Atticus Finch stood up for Tom Robinson. Martin Luther King Jr stood up for black rights. Rosa Parks, a very courageous woman in the civil rights. Tom Robinson was also a brave person. He shows courage on the witness stand. These people showed great courage because they never backed down they did what was right and what they believed in.
