In the healthcare setting there are many reasons why a computerized system is the best option. Some of those reasons would be have the software to handle the electronic medical record, electronic health records and a total practice management system. Each of these help the office run smoothly and efficiently. Although they sound very similar each have their own duties in the healthcare setting. The electronic medical record (EMR) is basicly the patient’s medical record from an individual medical practice, hospital and or pharmacy. It does not go outside from the facility where it was created. Whereas an electronic health record (EHR) is the patient’s electronic medical record from multiple medical practices combined into one database. When electronic medical records are combined from different providers or offices into one database they convey into an electronic health record. Data that is generated from the electronic medical record is produced by using the total practice management system. The total practice management system is a part of the electronic health records and electronic medical records because it helps provide medical records and laboratory, test results to the provider. It also helps document procedures performed, diagnosis and treatment plan chosen, and write or forward prescriptions to the patient's pharmacy.
