Many people have spoken about having a tough time accepting a person since the way they sexually identify themselves is different. Being identified as transgender has become a highly controversial topic around the world and part of the population does not quite understand why the people that identify themselves as transgender choose to do so. Some people do not believe in what it means to be transgender and let their opinions on the topic change the real meaning of the term.

What does it mean to be transgender? transgender people see themselves as a male or a female, despite being born the opposite sex. While making that transition some individuals take hormone therapy and have surgery to help feel like the gender they want to be but not all take hormones or have a surgery. In 2012 the HRC Foundation had done a survey of the LGBTQ youth and about 10 percent of the respondents had identified themselves as transgender or as another gender (Understanding the Transgender Community).

The term transgender is used to define individuals who do not identify with the sex that they were assigned at birth. For example, if a person who is born female decides later on in her life that she would like to identify as a man, that person would identify as a trans-man, and would most-likely use the pronouns “he” or “him” when describing himself.

Female sports are being ruined, because males are identifying themselves as females and competing with an unfair advantage. The biological men are causing a big problem around the world. They are breaking records and winning competitions in wrestling, weightlifting, track, softball, volleyball, basketball, mixed martial arts, and more. Transgenders competing in women’s sports ask for equality, but it is proven that men are bigger and stronger than women, so they are making the sports unfair for the biologically born women. In the media today, we hear of football players, celebrities and even pupils who are divulging that they are either homosexual or bisexual. In the TV show, House, one of the main characters, “Thirteen”, is a bisexual woman and nobody in the show treats her differently. However, there is one member group of the LGBT is still being represented poorly by the media. According to GLAAD, they are being depicted as villains, sex workers, and are still victims of offensive jokes. A friend I interviewed even claimed that people like her are the most looked down-trodden affiliates of the LGBT! This group is called transgendered. They are one of the most misunderstood and least respected groups in America today.

According to Bockting, a Transgender means having a gender identity that differs from the sex assigned at birth. Then continues by stating, gender identity is the basic conviction of being man, woman, or other. He lastly defines sexual orientation as to one’s sexual attraction, behavior, and emotional attachments to men, women, or both. All of these are his psychological definitions, which he mainly uses when discussing the challenges Transgender people face.

Sweeping headlines across the country, including in The New York Times, Christine Jorgensen became a household name because she was the first American to ever to have a sex change. One out-group of mine is the community of people who are transgender. I do not identify with this community. In the United States, this group has expanded over recent years. Transgender people go through a lot of discrimination in the United States. There are many negative stereotypes and prejudices that are associated with this group. There are many people who are supportive of this community, but there are also many people who are not supportive.

Many people don’t feel comfortable as their birth sex, and they switch so it is better for them even though a lot of people find it wrong. These particular individuals undergo discrimination from society, whether for reasons of ignorance, fear or intolerance, this population faces challenges in multiple areas of social justice sexual. Although the LGBT culture has made some strides in the areas of state and federal legislation, there is still a wide range of criminalization that takes place within our culture. Understanding the LGBT community and the history of their oppression may be the first step in becoming culturally competent. For many years this culture was denied their basic constitutional rights that were afforded to their equal heterosexual peers. Basic rights such as, adoption and marriage were uncommon to this culture until the 20th century.
