31 October 2017 Trip of a LifeTime It was December 22nd, 2016 in the middle of a cold miserable winter, my extended family and I took a trip that we will remember for a lifetime to Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is a Caribbean country that is well-know for their beautiful beaches. After our long, stuffy plane ride we landed in the Punta Cana airport, right as we stepped out of the plane we felt the sun dazzling on our pale, white Minnesota skin. Arriving in the country, at first I was overwhelmed with everything. Seeing the crowds of eager people coming and pushing against me to get where they wanted to be was overwhelming. I finally grabbed my heavy luggage and rushed to the exit to get to our taxi. Driving through the city was such an experienced, I observed how much difference it is there then Minnesota . I looked around and noticed little kids walking around with no shoes on or supervision I also saw families riding a tiny motorcycle with no protection and drove unsafely it gave me anxiety watching it. I observed trash everywhere lying on the side of the streets, it was such an eye opener to me to compare where I live to how they live and how thankful I was where I live and how I was raised. After driving through parts all around the city we arrived to our resort that we stayed at which was such a jaw dropping sight. When we got in we met some people that work there. They greeted us and were so
Ahh Mexico globally acclaimed for its really illustrious tourist destinations, revolutionary cuisine, and infamous for the drug cartel and the illegal immigrants that attempt to cross the border every year. I have crossed the border quite a number of times, legally of course. I travel to Mexico once or twice a year. Out of all the times, I have traveled there, the most amusing experience of the trip always lays within the border. Watch towers looking over the vast desert area, watchmen ready to pop anyone that even looks like it’s about to run, foot patrol with their M4 carbines and drug sniffing drugs trying to get a whiff of any illegal contraband trying to cross over into the great U.S of A. I will never forget these border crossing moments because what happens seems like something that would only happen in a movie or television show.
This year’s family vacation was one for the books. With my aunt living in Tennessee, we do not get together as often as we would like so my family decided to go to Nashville, Tennessee. When we started our trip, it was 6 a.m. and it was nothing short of fun and laughter along the way. Never having been to Tennessee before, I figured I’d enjoy the eight-hour ride of sight-seeing and laughter with my family. When we were a few miles into the trip, the mountains of Georgia were breathtaking. While I was enjoying the scenery, another thing that I found enjoyable about this trip was the conversation that I had with my family. We went on talking about life in general, all the struggles, and childhood memories that we had. We even talked about years
We arrived on a day where the sky was pale, and the people’s faces seemed very weary. I convinced myself that everything will be fine by repeating some positive thoughts in my head. The conflict in Iraq was pretty aroused most of the time, and even though my parents and I were Iraqis, people there still looked at us as foreigners, because we did not live in Iraq long enough. However, it was very hard to set an appointment for the passport process, so we waited about six days for it. It was not a pleasant waiting because there was no electricity, for we had to deal with the 120 Fahrenheit weather. My parents knew how difficult it was for me to stay there, even for a short period of time, but no solution they had. I have big dreams to achieve, I also have a big love for my family, and I was not ready to suffer if something would happen to them because of an explosion or a
On September 24, 2010, an airplane carried me to the ground of another country, to another dialect, new culture, new places, new habits, new challenges, new people and all in all, new life. I won't describe for you a lot about how hard it was to say farewell to all my relative and my friends, because I think you can picture yourself what would it feel like to leave everybody you know in your own country and move to America. When you leave your adolescence home — the place where you grew up, your local area or your country of residence or your homeland or anyway you feel to call it — you leave a piece of you behind. Before I came here in America, I thought that I would be in Hollywood, cozy house, bunches of tall structures, however to my mistake
My vacation to Jamaica was one of the best weeks of my life so far. At first though, it was a bit hectic. It was June 24 and I was excited to go out of the country for the first time. I could already see myself soaking up the sun on the beach. We had arrived at the airport and we’re waiting in line to get our boarding passes. We had gotten there a little later than expected and the line took a year it felt like. When we got our passes, we rushed to our terminal. Running for our lives, we were hoping we weren’t too late. As soon as we arrived, our plane had stopped boarding. My family and I were devastated. But my father was looking forward as he got us another flight to Chicago later that night, another flight to Jamaica the next morning, and another day for us to spend at the resort. In the morning of June 25, we had arrived in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
As we drove from the International Airport to our destination, the view from the car window began to change. I noticed how the large buildings and monuments from the capital were replaced by trees and mountains, how the occasional citizen walking their dog became a farmer guiding his cattle, and how the smell of Gourmet Dominican-american restaurants and fancy bakeries eventually transitioned into the smell of fresh baked bread and freshly picked “Dulce de leche” mangoes. In a matter of seconds, I was boggled by the distinct feel of the air I was being introduced to.
When I flew to Haiti I was unsure of what to expect. From a bird’s-eye view, I saw a beautiful landscape with a vibrant ocean surrounding the island. Upon arrival, I saw poverty, run down buildings, and very little people with actual homes; however, I saw smiles, laughter, and happiness among the people. I’ve traveled a lot throughout my life, but this trip gave traveling meaning. Experiencing their culture and customs gave me a broader perspective on other lifestyles and what they endure.
On June 16th, 2016, I had the opportunity of going on the most amazing adventure I’ve ever been on. I had the privilege of traveling to Haiti for a mission’s trip. Although June 16th was the longest/ one of the hardest days of my life, the outcome was so worth it. It was the day I, as a seventeen year old who has always been surrounded by my family, had to leave my 6 siblings and 4 parents behind. Not to mention I left my boyfriend behind, too. But despite all of that, I was going to a new country!
Tomorrow my family is going to Cuba for a vacation. I’m glad that summer break has started. I’m very excited to go on the plane and taking pictures of places around Cuba. To start off, I am packing my suitcase full of clothes and making sure that I have everything that I need for this special trip. I could imagine being in the hotel resort relaxing and having a fun time with my family. My dad told us that he booked our flight to Cuba in a very early time. We had to go to my grandparents house to stay there for the night. We left the house and went inside the car to get ready to go. We started driving to my grandparent’s house. When we got there Grandma Joan and Grandpa John were outside cleaning the front yard. They start to get surprised and
On January, 20, 2003, was the day In which I left my country and family and said hello to my new life In the United States Of America. I was 6 years old, living in Colombia, Medellin. Hours before my mother and I left, my family made a small farewell reunion. The meeting was set in my aunt's living room, which was small with orange walls and was decorated with my mother's paintings. The room was full of emotion, people crying, laughing, sharing shared memories. One by one, people stop in front of me telling me how much they will miss me and how lucky I was to get the opportunity to live in the Unites States Of America.
On July 20, 2011, we boarded our plane from San Francisco to Amsterdam. When getting to Amsterdam it was dark and dreary, although it was the middle of the day It was very dim and rainy. It wasn’t like America, people weren’t as friendly
It was the night before leaving Canada and flying over to the Philippines. the Philippines and Hong Kong are considered my “home”. I haven’t visit there for four years, I said to myself “ Tomorrow will be the biggest change in my whole life.” When I woke up in the morning inside the airplane, I saw the sun shining in my eyes as the airplane landed at the airport. When I stepped out of the plane, I saw the fresh, green and the muddy land of Philippines. The feeling of arriving to the airport is unbelievable and amazing at the same time. I saw my loving grandma and my awesome uncle. They greeted me and my family with a warm and gentle hug. My grandma cried with happiness. It took a lengthy five hour drive back to Flora where my family lives.
I still remember a year ago, in the cold winter day when I first came to America; I and my sister looked so tiny in thick, coarse sweaters. In the middle of the large airport with thousands of people around us, I felt so different. As a young girl who grew up in a small town in Vietnam, I had never seen so many people with different nationalities like in this airport. The languages they used, their appearances were so different from what I imagined. I felt so curious and astonished by everything around me. Then, I met a middle-aged man while I and my sister were at the coffee shop in the airport. He was sitting next to us and having a cup of hot coffee. He told us that
