Humanity as a whole is growing exponentially and this growth is anything but consistent. Many nations will be experiencing population decreases while other experience intense population growth. The impending impact of that fact is scaring a multitude of countries on the international market. In this essay I will answer three of the major pressing questions facing the world as they try to prepare themselves for this drastic change.

In 1990, the fall of the communist regime affected the region. This fall changed the demographics of the region and somehow by 2016 it changed not only the landscape but the population as well. This change took place on the macro level and it also affected the micro level. Statistics show that the live birth ratio dropped throughout the years, that only 7,569 babies were born in 2016 versus 6,464 deaths. These numbers show that this group is headed for extinction. As social workers, an intervention is needed to ensure the continuation of this group of people. Studies are taking at present time to find out the cause and effect of this drastic change of population.

Reading the statistics of this article without knowing the title would lead one to believe that they were reading about a third world country, not a country that is so technologically advanced that the United States was engaged in a race to space with it. Though this article is filled with a plethora of statistics, there are a few which illustrate the bottom line succinctly. Essentially, there is an alarming population decline in Russia (Eberstadt, 2009). Alarming in its own right, even more disturbing are the reasons for this decline which are set forth in this article (Eberstadt, 2009). The gist of the situation is that the mortality rate is higher than the birth rate (Eberstadt, 2009). There are many factors contributing to this situation but a high rate of alcohol consumption among those of child bearing age is a significant factor (Eberstadt, 2009).

In this project, I will examine the relative rate of population growth for the individual countries of a selected region. I chose ten countries in Africa: Morocco, Egypt, Sudan, Mali, Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Angola, and South Africa, one country from Eastern Europe, Estonia, one country from Asia, China, one country from the Middle East, Iran, one country from South America, Bolivia, and the United States.
