Mean, Median, and Mode for Grouped Data
Part A – Frequency Tables
The following table shows the annual salaries earned by employees of a small company: Annual salary ($)

a) What is the mean salary?
To find the mean of data in a frequency table: for each row…
- multiply each value by its frequency
- add up these values
- divide by the frequency total
3(106500) + 5(213750) + 5(255000) +1(99000) +1(150000)

b) What is the median salary?
There are 15 employees. ∴ the salary of the 8th employee is the median. The

The median will occur in an interval. Find the middle data value, and then find what interval this value occurs in. The median is the midpoint of that interval.
The mode is the midpoint of the interval that occurs most frequently.
a) mean
∑ fx = 2658 n 500
= 5.316
b) mode
Looking at the frequency column, we can see that the “4-5” interval occurs most often. So, the mode is the midpoint of that interval, which is 4.5 . We could also say that the modal interval is “4-5”.
c) median
The middle data value is between values 250 and 251. Both these data values occur in the “4-5” interval (look at the Cumulative Frequency column).
So the median is 4.5, the midpoint of the “4-5” interval.
Part C – The Effect of Outliers
Two classes that wrote the same physics examination had the following results:

Circle the outliers. What effect do outlier values have on the mean?
What measure of central tendency is a better choice when dealing with small data sets that contain outliers?

1. For the following scores, find the mean, median, and the mode. Which would be the most appropriate measure for this data set?
I have made some progress regarding my action plan. I haven’t attended any open days as yet but planning to do so in June so far and completed my personal statement. My first action plan regarding higher education was to get distinctions in all my assignments. So
5. Give the standard deviation for the mean and median column. Compare these and be sure to identify which has the least variability?
Tissues are groups of cells, which are placed together to achieve a common function. There are four main types of tissue: Epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous. Most of these tissues are found in our bodies, however the epithelial tissue is covered all over the surfaces of the body.
Median: 3, 5, 11, 12, 13, 15, 19, 35, 42, 65 = 13 + 15 = 28/2 = 14
For the education data, I must say to calculate the median, from high school to college graduate, the median would be the some college portion since it would be the middle. The median for the experimental group would be 11 and 34.4% and for the control group it would be 15 and 41.7%.
Bigger sample size will give a narrower confidence interval range (more specific) outliers affect the mean but not the median – this is why the median is preferred here.mean

In about 1930, Class 2A (more than 300 boys) was added. Class C (45 boys or less) was created later in 1949. Three more classifications were added in 1954, 1971, and 1991 to give a total of seven
