Values in "The Chosen" Essays

Throughout our lives we encounter many people. A person can come and go in an instant. But some individuals stick with you, and you stick with them and eventually become friends. There are many different ideas of what friendship is and what it means. A friend is more than just a person who you like and enjoy being with. A true friend must love unconditionally, be trusted, and show understanding.

Helen Keller once stated that “Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.” Friendship can be defined in many different ways. For example a four year old might say that a friend is the other boy that gave him a cookie. While an adult says someone to talk and relate to when they need it. They are also formed in a plethora of ways. For instance, the two four year olds could grow up staying friends, or you meet some random person in the supermarket and start talking, or even through another friend. Friends are part of what makes life fun, being able to enjoy the joyous times with another person, and lean on them in the challenging times.

Many people have different meanings for a true friendship. My definition of a true friendship is when you can rely on a person to be there for you no matter what situation you are in.

Everyone, quite simply, needs to have friends. In her article “Fifteen Reasons We Need Friends,” Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne says that one should appreciate their friends, for they can offer vital life skills, define properties, and can help you get more friends. Moreover, during moments of crisis or accomplishment, it is always good to have a friend there to provide comfort and solace, encouragement and support. Although there are many different types of characters and personalities out there, there is essentially three types of friends: friends who are temporary, friends who are there for a reason, and friends who are there for a lifetime.

Friendship is a loving relationship between a human and another human or animal. They are based on mutual honest respect in between two or more individuals. Human friendships are the most common and they are considered as one of the most valuable things in life. If you try to live your life without any friends or not talking to anybody, you will go crazy, and you will never experience what a wonderful feeling it is to have someone beside you that you can trust with anything, have fun with, and know that this person is special for you. In a friendship you are comfortable with the other person and you want to spend time with them. Having a friend is always good because you have someone to rely on and you have companionship.

Many philosophers through history have explained what the meaning of friendship is. One philosopher is Aristotle who said, “ For a person to be friends with another it is necessary that they bear good will to each other and wish good things for each other, without this escaping their notice.” Friendship has many different characteristics to it such as unconditional love, honesty, loyalty, nonjudgemental, and attentiveness.

Growing up, my father always told me,” You are going to meet many people in your life, and though you will call them friends, they will eventually leave. Friendship is not simply a "relationship", knowing someone, conversing with that person, or dealing with that person in business, school, or in casual acquaintance. True friendship is not just a "relationship", but self-sacrificing love. A friend is also one who supports, sympathizes, and is a person in whom you can confide. There are unique qualities that a person must have to be considered a friend.

As Kwame Anthony Appiah writes, “Yet even with values we do not take seriously, there is something to be hoped for; namely, understanding. Nor do you have to share a value to feel how it might motivate someone”. (Appiah, p.664)
