Varicose veins are elongated, dilated superficial veins with incompetent valves that permit reverse blood flow. These veins can appear in different parts of the body, but it is mainly seen in the lower extremities (Shiland 19). The common cause that I came across is that it’s from defective or absent valves. These collapsed valves are a result of prolonged standing or sitting which causes pressure on the valves of the veins (Frazier and Drzymkowski 488). I chose this vascular disorder because I have varicose veins all over my legs. I am assuming that I had inherited the disorder from my mother, who got hers from my grandmother. So I was curious to know if it’s hereditary and are there any other causes or contributions that I may have done that had resulted to this disorder. …show more content…

Women are at high risk because of all the weight that they bear on their feet from being pregnant and having multiple pregnancies. It is common to get them from standing on your feet too long. A popular belief of getting these veins is from crossing your legs for prolonged periods, which causes the clogged blood flow in the legs. Normal movement of the legs causes the muscles to relax and contract which helps the blood flow upward, but standing or sitting makes the blood flow downward and get piled up in the veins causing pressure. This pressure is the result of the bulging out of the veins on the surface of your skin (Frazier and Drzymkowski 489). The veins usually like a spider web design on the surface of your skin. The can be harmless but for some they can be painful to the point where they have to have them surgically
