The public memorial I chose is the Veterans Memorial located in Arlington, Texas at Veterans Park. This memorial is dedicated to all the citizens of Arlington whom have served in the military. This memorial creates a special memory in which all those who have served will not be forgotten. This work is site-specific in that it is located in Arlington, to represent the veterans of Arlington, and it is also located in a park called Veterans Park. This make the memorial even more special for the veterans to visit. Visitors are able to experience and embrace this memorial by walking towards and around the huge columns and the magnificent statue of a soldier.
When the World War I Veteran returned home, the U.S. states organize a parade in honor of their services. During the first months of their return everything was great because American citizens and the War Veteran were still celebrating the victory of World War One over the Central Powers. After the welcome parades, the War veteran returned to their hometowns to see their families and friends. Families and Friend were happy to see their love ones returning home from World War I as heroes. Not everybody welcomed the Veteran with open hands, those people were Big Businessman because during the World War I; Companies that employed the War Veteran before the war, they had already given their jobs to women and African American from the south, who
How did a Vietnam soldier's life change during and after the war. Society had a lot of different views regarding the soldiers and the war. When coming home veterans faced many distinct challenges. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial helped to heal the nation. The Vietnam War had a major impact on the United States and the soldiers who fought in it.
On May 1, 1981 a jury declared Maya Ying Lin of Athens, Ohio as the winning memorial design. The memorial’s walls point to the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. 58,267 names are inscribed in chronological order of the date of casualty. I believe this depicts the war as a series of human sacrifices and therefore they shall receive a special place in history. Each name is preceded on the west wall or on the east wall by one of two symbols: a diamond or a cross. The diamond denotes that the individual has been declared deceased. The 780 persons whose names are designated by a cross were either missing or prisoners at the end of the war and remains missing and unaccounted for. If a person returns alive, a circle, as a symbol of life, is inscribed over the cross. In the event an individual’s remains are returned or are otherwise accounted for, the diamond is superimposed over the cross. Knowing this, I remain hopeful that some soldiers will return home alive. Walking beside the wall and seeing the names inscribed allowed me to feel great pride in my country as these soldiers gave up their life fighting for the people of America. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial will properly commemorate each soldier for the rest of
“The last American soldier left Vietnam during the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. For 2.4 million who served in Vietnam, there was no official homecoming. In June of 2005, Branson, Missouri held “Operation Welcome Home” for Vietnam Veterans. The parade and events were planned to provide the celebration and recognition they did not receive 30-plus years earlier.” (Vietnam: Homecoming) The veterans were able to see the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall and find the names of men they had known they had dies while serving. These veterans met with men they had formerly served with. Although this event was only a fraction of the welcome the soldiers truly deserved, many veterans were very appreciative of this. “Branson gave me
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is made of Black Granite. The design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was a contest. Within the contest different U.S citizen submitted design ideas for the memorial and 8 different artists judges the entries in order to pick the best one. The wall was created by Maya Ying Lin. The wall is not extremely tall but rather is longer than most normal monuments. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall invites those visiting it to come closer and in contact with it. This is due to the fact that the print on the wall is small and visitors can also do a rubbing or tracing of the different names on the wall. The Vietnam Memorial Wall was an intentional monument since it was planned out and designed with a purpose of commemorating
The U.S Department Veteran’s Affairs (VA) provides a wide range of benefits for our service members, veterans and their families. Some of these benefits include but are not limited to include compensation, disability, education, and home loans. Throughout this paper I will discuss these benefits and the eligibility required to receive them. Eligibility for most VA benefits is based on type of discharge received through the military which is normally all discharges under other than dishonorable conditions.
Remembering the Vietnam War Veterans The Vietnam War remains today to be one of the most memorable and long - lived wars in history. Mike Clark was one of those veterans who fought in the war and he is alive to share is share his memorable experiences in the war. In remembering the Vietnam War veterans, it is important to consider the experiences of guerilla warfare, the training the soldiers endured, and the lives of the veterans after the war.
The first American troops arrived in Danang, South Vietnam on 8th March, 1965. The troops’ mission was to defend the American airfield from the Viet Cong insurgents. However, their mission gradually extended to defensive patrolling and later on taking the offensive. As such, the number of US troops swelled to 184,300 by the end of the year and by1969, the number of American soldiers had swelled to 543,000. Correspondingly, opposition against the mission, which was previously minimal, rose magnanimously. In April 1967, a crowd of over 100,00 people marched from Central Park to the United Nations Buildings to ask for the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam. By this time, over 8,000 American troops had been lost in the war. Following the protests, six Vietnam Veterans, among those who had returned home formed the organization Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW). They wanted the government to “bring their brothers back home.”
I have always been interested in the Vietnam War and the results of “the longest war in America.” Therefore, I have decided to examine the social attitudes toward Vietnam veterans. Since I feel so passionately about the way that Vietnam veterans are viewed, the purpose of my paper is to inform others about the way that the veterans have been criticized and misrepresented. Personally, I hope to gain a further understanding of the attitudes and views towards Vietnam veterans, especially since my father is a veteran. After reading my paper, I hope that my audience will walk away with more respect and reverence for those that fought in the Vietnam War and gave their lives for their country. My
Field of remembrance set by widows in Hyde Park provided opportunities to plant crosses to commemorate died soldiers last from 20 April to Anzac Day.
I have chosen the Texas Panhandle War Memorial here in Amarillo Texas. The memorial was the idea of Mr. L. D. Weeks who lives near the area where the memorial is located. In February of 1992, Weeks approached the Texas Panhandle chapter

When walking through Boston's renowned Harvard Yard, one may scope out the mixture of architecture throughout its landscape. From the traditional Memorial Hall influenced by Romanesque churches, to the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard Yard is like a salad bowl of architecture. Perhaps because I am a lover of Victorian style structures, or maybe because of its interior's beauty and richness, Memorial Hall intrigued my interest most of all.

I began exercising my rights as an American citizen in earnest when I was 12 years old. During lunchtime at school, a few kids in my class placed thumbtacks on my teacher’s chair (an old trick). She was understandably very upset when she sat on them. Not having DNA and fingerprint testing at her disposal, Ms. Hana issued the ultimatum that unless those who had committed the act came forward, she would be forced to punish the whole class. We had until the end of the day to produce the guilty persons. The next day Ms. Hana came in and said that we would all be facing detention that day since she had not managed to find out whodunit. I raised my hand and respectfully said that I was sure I was voicing the opinion of
