To explore how this statement influences the Veteran Administration’s communication efforts, we should identify the audience that the mission is targeting. Clearly the targeted audience are Veterans, their care givers, and their survivors. Communication efforts must always keep the targeted audience in mind by focusing on Veterans’ priorities at the Veterans Health Administration, Veterans Benefits Administration, National Cemetery Association, and at the VA Central Office. Consistency at each branch of the VA will give credibility to its message to Veterans and the communities who serve Veterans. The mission statement says that VA’s sole purpose is to care, to serve, and to honor Veterans. This is what Parsons (2013) call setting the tone for the communication process, moreover, answers what does the VA do for Veterans. This puts the mission in the mission statement. Pursuing this further, the mission to care, to serve, and to honor need to be at the forefront in decision making when communicating with Veterans the employees, the contractors, and the volunteers who provide various benefit services to Veterans and their families (Parsons, 2013).
