Violence is defined as the abusive use of “force”. One type or another violence has greatly affected one of us, someone we know, and society as a whole. Every day, tons of children under the age of twenty are killed and many of these victims have died by gun wounds. By the age of 18, young people will have viewed an estimated two hundred thousand acts of violence on television. Many people wonder why we live in such a violent society, well because we are surrounded by violence every day, and it may occur in our daily lives through domestic violence, school violence, and through the mass media. With that being said, the news coverage has been bringing to our attention the crisis of violence afflicting the young generations all over the …show more content…
There are many different versions of what happened on that day, which is why there have been so much argument from a lot of different people on whether this was another racial issue, or was it really self- defense. A couple hours before the shooting occurred, police officers got a phone call about a convenient store being robbed. Michael Brown was identified as the suspect in the “strong arm robbery” meaning there was no weapons, but the perpetrator used physical force. When the employee tried to prevent the man from leaving, the man grabbed his shirt, and pushed him into a display rack. A police report stated that based on the surveillance camera, they could tell that that perpetrator was in fact Michael Brown. Brown stole a box of cigars before he was shot to death. Officials say that the police officer who shot him, did not know Brown was a suspect of an armed robbery. According to police officer Daren Wilson, he had just received a phone call about a sick baby, when he came across brown and his friends walking in the street. Wilson pulled up and told the boys “get the fuck on the sidewalk,” to which Brown refused, letting the officer know that his Grandma’s house was a few feet away. Wilson claims that he stepped out of the car, to which Brown became scared, and grabbed for Wilson’s gun. Wilson and Brown tussled for a few seconds, before Wilson finally got away from Brown, and shot him in self-defense. Witnesses,
The shooting occurred at the Fruitvale train station on January 1st, 2009. At the station, a fight broke out in one of the trains and when the train stopped the fight started again outside of the train at one of the stops. While they were fighting on the train the BART officers were called. The officers came and arrested everyone that was in the fight. A guy named Oscar Grant was in the fight and was also arrested (Meyer). While Grant was being arrested by Officer Mehserle, he resisted the officer’s attempts. Since Grant was resisting he was pushed onto the ground on his stomach to be handcuffed. Johannes Mehserle was having trouble handcuffing Grant so the other BART officers helped him. When Grant was on the ground Mehserle was going to tase him since he would not stop resisting. When Mehserle thought he pulled out his TASER, he instead pulled out his gun. Mehserle accidentally shot Grant with his gun since he thought he pulled out his TASER (Bulwa).
Many people believe that Officer Darren Wilson made the right decision when he fatally shot Michael Brown because he feared for his life. In a report by Rachel Clark and Christopher Lett, CNN reporters, they describe the incident that led to the shooting began when Wilson left the scene of a sick call and encountered Michael Brown with his friend Dorian Johnson walking in the middle of the
9 shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old who had scuffled with Ferguson officer Darren Wilson, came just a few weeks after Eric Garner — an unarmed black man accused of illegally selling cigarettes — died in a struggle with white New York City officers. Garner’s death was captured by an onlooker’s video. Brown’s was not, and word quickly spread that he had been shot while surrendering with his hands up — an assertion uncorroborated by state and federal investigations.
Brown was unarmed and running away after the police stopped him and pulled a gun out for no apparent reason. The police pulled up next to him when and told him to “get the fuck on the ground”, words that shouldn't be needed if the teen wasn't doing anything wrong at the moment. Michael's friend, Dorian Johnson, recounted all the events of the day Brown was killed by the Ferguson police in an interview with MSNBC. Johnson was very close to Brown when the initial shot were fired off. The police say that the reason Brown was shot was because he tried to forcibly take the gun fro mthe officer, but Dorian says otherwise. According to Dorian, he had just met up with Brown and the two were walking to Johnson’s house and as they were nearly there, Johnson realized they were being tailed by a cop who ordered them to “get the fuck on the ground” to which Johnson replied saying they were almost where they were going. The officer then backed up and almost hit the two teens, and said “what did you say?” and tried to slam opened the door, but instead hit Brown and closed. The officer proceeded to grab Brown by the neck which Brown struggled to release the grip. This is what the officers say was the struggle for the gun by Michael and the officer. Johnson saw that the cop was reaching for something, but at first thought it was a stun gun until he saw the muzzle and had it pointed at

Teen Violence is a big dilemma in today’s society. Violent behaviors usually start from family and peers, as well as teens observing it at there neighborhoods or communities. These behaviors are reinforced by what youth see on television, on the Internet, in video games, movies, music videos, and what they hear in their music. When children are disciplined with severe corporal punishment or verbal abuse, or when they are physically or sexually abused, or when they witness such behavior in their home, it is not surprising that they behave violently toward others. Teen Violence has had such an impact in our youth today that it leads many destructive things and that’s why we have so much violence today.
Initially, I classified “violence” into two categories: physical violence and mental violence. My definition for physical violence was, actions that cause damages or harms to things or people physically; my definition for mental violence was, mental destruction or harm. I defined violence this way because I believe that no matter by what means, mental or physical, if something or someone has been harmed, then it is regarded as violence. Such as destructing public properties, insulting others on a daily basis, and murdering.
