Visual Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is the ability to understand that there is more to a visual text than what is initially seen. Thinking critically enables you to develop a strong opinion on the specific visual text, and therefore allows discussion with those who may have conflicting views. Critical thinking doesn’t have to be negative, although the term ‘critical’ may give it that connotation. It simply means to look further than the obvious, and analyse that information in order to improve our overall understanding of the visual text. The processes of looking closely and thinking critically about visual texts are important to art and design practices because they allow us to develop our own ideas about a visual text. Often artists leave their work open to interpretation, with only a vague title to supply context. John Ruszkiewicz explains it when he says that, by being aware of the context “we appreciate the reason a work was created and the goals it was meant to achieve.” (Ruszkiewicz, John J. p. 32). Through critical thinking we discover the specific time period during which a visual text was created, which helps us to understand the artist’s intended message because we can link it to events around the same time. An example of this is the political cartoon drawn by Steve Sack in 2014, titled ‘Ferguson Law Enforcement’ (Fig 2). This visual text was a response to the police brutality in America after Michael Brown, an unarmed black man, was killed by a police officer. The cartoon depicts how African Americans are unfairly targeted by the police, who are trying to hide this obvious injustice from the media.
