Everything is a work in progress; nothing is perfect or finished, and there is always room for improvement. Technology can always be upgraded, the school system can be enhanced, disrespectful individuals can always ameliorate, lousy actions or issues can always be changed, and ignorance can be turned to knowledge. Currently, individuals are leaving school unaware of how to perform the tasks that await them outside of their parents care. Schools are not preparing students to live self-sufficiently once leaving high school. In order to resolve such issue, schools should require a standardized test on essential household tasks, a mandatory home economics class, and visuals that promote the importance of knowing how to do everyday tasks. It is required in many states, including the state of Virginia, that if a student wishes to receive a standard or an advanced diploma, they must take one economics class and take the W!SE exam. The W!SE test is given to the students after completing the economics class, and …show more content…
Students tend to face tests and forced classes with annoyance and unwillingness to learn. In order to grab the student’s attention, advertisements or visuals could be given to motivate them to learn during this type of class (“How the Power of Interest Drives Learning”). As stated by John Medina, students tend to pay more attention to visuals rather than words. “We are incredible at remembering pictures. Hear a piece of information, and three days later you’ll remember 10% of it. Add a picture and you’ll remember 65%. Professionals everywhere need to know about the incredible inefficiency of text-based information and the incredible effects of images,” (“Vision”). If a speaker comes and discusses the importance of home education and self-sufficiency, or there is a video about the topic, the more likely of a chance a student will be motivated to learn about basic life
There was a time when America’s education system was top-notch according to the culture and society. With time, a myriad of things has changed, but unfortunately what has not evolved is the American education system. The country is still following a system which was not designed for the current global economic climate. Equality, as positive as it sounds is not as sufficient when it comes to education. The system treats students equally yet expect a similar culmination and outcome. Every child has his individuality and distinct abilities; one cannot judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree. Conversely, a few of the prominent reasons why the education system is failing are overcrowded schools, the rise of technology, and following the same old school hours.
Imagine what it would be like to not get to have your first day of school as a child. For a child that is home schooled, they never get to walk through the doors on their first day with a new backpack, new school supplies, and new clothes. As little as this issue may seem, is it important for people to understand the effects that homeschooling can have on the cognitive development of elementary age children because by not being exposed to the resources and relationships children can get out of public school, they lack the benefits that come along with the system. Children cannot develop their emotions and problem solving skills, which could result in them being less successful in the future. The next generation is meaningful to society because they are the ones that will help American progress, so people need to ensure that they are getting the best education for their children. Although many parents believe homeschooling can be beneficial to their children because of the convenience and closeness to home, thoroughly examining the negative effects it has including a lack in the cognitive development, limited exposure to problems associated with the public as well as not having the benefits of a relationship with teachers and other students can prove that homeschooling are harmful to the cognitive development of elementary aged children.
The American Education System is not meeting the needs of current students. If anything, the system is not building a sturdy foundation for the future working class. Schools have existed for many years and through the years they have worked differently. However, every school’s main purpose was to educate students to be efficacious later in life. Modern day schools are corrupting students with added pressure, making fewer accommodations for special education students, and take away individualism. Along with those are problems comes numerous others. The students of modern times are the people of our future and the future does not look too bright with the current American Education System.
At Fond du Lac High School, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, there are classes that each grade is required to take. For example, every student is required to take four English classes, one per year. In addition to that, every student is required to take three science, math, and social studies classes. This hinders a student’s ability to further themselves along a potential career path by forcing them into taking classes that aren't needed. In order to fix this policy, three things need to happen. There needs to be more trade high schools, fewer required classes, and differently formatted school days.
The education system has been the cornerstone of freedom and equity for economic success in The United States. However, the history of education has never been so crucial to the collective future of our nation and to the young people. The public schools must struggle to provide equality in educational system as never before. The demand for education has become necessary and growing to provide education for all students to comply with the rigorous academic standards on a global scale (Baker, B. D., Sciarra, D. G., Farrie, D. (2010, p. 1).

Imagine the absolute bliss our families will be in once their loved ones from all contrasting classes and backgrounds, are finally offered an equal opportunity for success in America. Although this is a long term goal, envision in a few decades, this dream becoming reality. Indirect benefits to the economy from expanded innovation will be significantly recognizable over time. Moreover, improved results will be seen through student performance in all subjects of study and also newly released PISA scores. To provide insight, take East Kentwood High School (EKHS), a once prioritized school into account. In 2013, East Kentwood was in the 4th percentile of all 3,500+ high schools in Michigan. In the literal bottom tier of
In some of our urban schools, we are graduating kids from high school that can't read their own diplomas, in order to fix this rising problem we need to get back to basics in education.
According the most recent national assessment recorded in the Washington post, “the nations high school seniors have shown no improvement in math and reading performances since 2009.” In the most recent years, education has taken a huge downfall. Since 2010, over 45% of students drop out. Many students have problems with the grading system, so many different testing programs and having to follow a set of rules and not expand on those rules. The education system needs to induce more creativity, enforce the ways on how education is important and elaborate more on the rules of grading.
Until the mid-twentieth century, universal high school graduation was not a realistic goal. Only just recently has school been treated as a full-time affair entrusted to professional teachers. Classroom schooling has been accepted as the norm by most of the nation and the recent rise in homeschooling has come to many as a surprise (Lines, 2000).
Since the founding of America, the process of educating the populace has gone through many transformations. In the beginning parents would teach their children the necessary things to survive. As groups of people came together to form communities the practice of formalizing education became standard. One-room classrooms with students of all ages and backgrounds was the norm. As knowledge increased and economic needs demanded a more skilled workforce, the need for a more formalized educational process also increased. The basics of reading, writing and arithmetic were foundational to the success of these early communities and their economic growth. As communities grew and expanding knowledge was incorporated into the teaching process, a formalized educational system would be needed and thus the advent of the public education system was born. Various communities of peoples having their own particular religions, cultural and ethnic backgrounds would also create private educational systems. As the country grew, public and private education became the norm. The idea of homeschooling became almost nonexistent, and was soon looked upon rather negatively. In modern times, the current public and national educational system has caused some individuals to reevaluate the needs of their families and children, with many ultimately deciding that they could educate their own children better than the
“Homeschooling has become a popular alternative to public or private school for an increasing number of students in the United States” (The Language of Composition, 276). “In 1995”, according to “the National Home Education Research Institute,” “the number of home-schooled children [was] approximately 500,000 students” (Pearson). Then in 2002, the number completely doubled, showing that “at least 1 million children” (Riech) are being homeschooled. On the one hand, there are an abounding amount of views that suggest homeschooling to be absolutely beneficial in the students’ lives, however, on the other hand, people still suggest that attending public or private school is still the better choice. This method of education brings an enormous set of contradicting views.
For the last several decades, there has been a great return to homeschooling. Many families have seen the need to remove their children from the public education system for a variety of reasons: for religious grounds, because of a decline of morals in the public system, or to give their children an education where they are not held back from reaching their potential. When homeschooling, a child can work at their own pace – often learning 2 years or more of material in one year and allowing them to fully explore topics that interest them. Their intellectual curiosity can be fulfilled and they can be the best they can possibly be. Students in the public school system are subjected to teaching that is repetitive, biased, and falls short of academic success. In the past, students that were failing coursework, but were getting older, were pushed on to higher grades even though they were not ready for the more advanced coursework. In the 1980’s there was a great number of graduates who could not even read. How can the proponents of the public education system even make claims that to be successful today, children need to attend their institutions? Today’s formal, public educational system of schooling is not necessary because it is a system
The topic of education, especially the right way to educate, has been debated by many. Out of the many ways to educate students, homeschooling is highly debated. The repercussions homeschooling has on students is the main source of these debates. Some believe that homeschooling hinders a child 's ability to participate within their peer group and to distinguish from wrong and right. Along with their mental and social growth, the parents have to be willing to put in the effort to make sure the student is getting the information they need from them. Although the homeschooling lifestyle is not always attainable, it is still considered a viable option for many parents and students. While many believe that homeschooling children coddles them
