A government surveyor drew a line separating the Wallowa Valley. The Nez Perce objected. The Nez Perce claimed, “the Indians who signed the new treaty were the leaders of other bands and had no right to give up land that was not even theirs” (Williams & Youngs, 5). This is how the Non-Treaty came about. Soon the whites and Indians fought over the land and Indians were killed, one that was best friend with Joseph, he felt like he was is brother. Burial was granted to bury the Indian in the valley by General Howard. Losing his brother was heartbreaking for Joseph. He was important to the tribe. Still, the Nez Perce fount to keep their land and live in the valley. Eventually Joseph became tired and sent a note to General Howard which read,
Chief Joseph was the leader of the Nez Percé, a Native American tribe that occupied the Wallowa Valley. In 1877 the United States ordered the Nez Percé to move to a reservation in Idaho. Chief Joseph resisted all efforts to force his tribe to the reservation, and began to lead his people towards Canada. General Oliver O. Howard, threatened the tribe with a cavalry attack. Over the time frame of four months, Chief Joseph and his group marched toward Canada, bearing the freezing temperatures. The journey consisted of several victories against the U.S. Force. However, it took a toll on the tribe. Chief Joseph and his people were completely exhausted. Having seen the great loss of his people, he surrendered. His surrender speech to General Howard shows the power of words through the use of appeals, arrangement, style, and tone.
The Chippewa Indians are one of the largest Native American groups in North America. There are approximately 150 different groups of Chippewa Native Americans. They can be found in states such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Several of the Chippewa tribes can also be found in parts of Southern Canada. The majority of the Chippewas speak the English language. However, a large number of them also speak their native tongue, the Ojibway language. They are historically known for their crafting abilities, use of cowrie shells for trading, use of copper arrow points, and harvesting of wild rice. The Chippewa Indian canoe, made of birch bark, is recognized as being the finest in design and workmanship.

Thesis/Introduction- Have you ever wondered what our lives would be like if we had to get our resources from the environment around us? There would be no fast food, no stores. We would have to hunt for our own food. This is how the Plateau and Coastal tribes lived. The Chinook and Nez Perce tribes interacted with the environment differently and similarly to provide food, shelter, and clothing for their people.
At Wood’s request, 40 Nez Perce rode from Wallowa to Lapwai for a council, which was held from July 22-23, 1876. Wood told the Nez Perce that Howard had proposed that the U.S. Government appoint a commission to settle once and for all the ownership of the Wallowa country, and he asked the two Indians to let white law deal with Findley and McNall. Both Joseph and Ollokot, Joseph’s brother, agreed to this, and the Nez Perce returned home. Afterward, Howard wrote to Brainard to insist that the two men be tried for murder.
Navajo Indian Tribe Are Native Americans from the Southwestern United States. They are one of the largest tribes of American Indians in the world. They lived in the Southwest areas that are today known as New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. Their "Navajo" came from the Spanish who called them the Apaches of Navajo. They called themselves "Dine" or "the People". I chose to write about the Navajo Indians Tribes because I would like to learn more about them.
In the 1500’s Navajo people began creating their tribe. The Navajo indians call themselves “Dine”, which translates to “The People”. Navajo represent the largest of all Indian nations in The United States. The Navajos have lived in North America, Alaska, and Canada. At present they have the largest reservations in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. This tribe happens to be the largest tribe in the United States today.
Let’s start by looking at where they lived and settled. The Cherokee settled in the east around South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. The Apache settled in the west around New Mexico, Arizona as well as Texas, Colorado and Kansas. The Cherokee lived in log cabins where the Apache lived in tents or tee pees. The Cherokee were nestled in the mountains, where the Apache stayed mobile.
It’s strange to think that even after my commitment to the military, here I am living with Sioux natives. You really humble out after you give up all your materialistic things and live for those around you. There is another white woman here named “Stands With a Fist” and her and I are getting married. My priorities have completely changed. I cared about my family a lot more and I even have love for some animals. I abandoned the fort because I’m very happy living with the natives and “Kicking Bird” has provided me with my very own teepee. These Sioux people are so loyal to their friends, passionate, and loving to their families. Every since I arrived at the Great Plains, there has been a wolf following me. I decided to name him Two Socks because
When Chief Joseph took leadership of his tribe from his father, Chief Joseph the Elder, the American government was attempting to move the Nez Perce off of their ancestral land in the Wallowa Valley, Oregon Territory into a reservation in Idaho to make room for the white settlers who were moving west. His goal was to protect his land by peaceful negotiation with the government. “Chief Joseph had been trying to secure his homeland for his tribe, the Nez Perce, without bloodshed.
The city of Denver and the western pioneers that founded it are analogous with one another. In the mid 1800s, the eastern United States lacked the employment opportunities and lifestyle that many people desired. In result of this unfortunate economic downturn, people known as the pioneers travelled west in search of new opportunities. People came from all walks of life from lower class to the wealthy to pioneer the unexplored lands. They started their journey from the overcrowded East coming from states like Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Iowa, and Illinois. Some were in search of new beginnings, others searching for gold. In 1859, during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, gold was found in where the Chicago Creek and Clear Creek meet in Idaho Springs, CO.
To a Native American, ones heritage can define who an individual is and may become. When America was being populated by Europeans there was an effort to alter the way of life for Native Americans forcing them to adopt new ideas and abandon their traditions. This has led to modern Native Americans feeling like they have lost a large piece of their identity. Native Americans struggle in mainstream society because they have dealt with great trauma and don’t have the tools to help them cope in healthy ways. They have been torn from their homes and heritage, as there was “centuries of forcible removal of Native American children from their homes in order to be assimilated into mainstream American culture” (Wyant). The result of these kinds of actions
Going back as early as 1100, the Navajo culture is one of the more fascinating tribes in North America. Although their culture did not appear until around this time, their peoples have been around since 12,000 B.C, maybe even earlier. The Navajos originated around the “Four Corners” area, in south western Colorado and south eastern Utah. This group was eventually, and forcefully removed from their land, and mainly settled in the area of northern New Mexico and Arizona, expanding their territory although they would continue to feud with settlers that would take their land, and surroundings.
The onondaga tribe is one of the most interesting tribes in the world. They do all sorts of interesting things. They have a lot of location. They have some traditions. Last they have a lot of present-day facts.
