1. Go to a public place and OBSERVE the community of people in that place for at least 30 minutes; perhaps as long as 60 minutes. In your report, describe the setting and note the date and time of your observation. Describe the element of “community” that you observed. The setting that I chose to observe a community of people for 30 minutes was outside of a local Wal-Mart retail store on a Thursday afternoon. The date was June 30, 2016 and the time was 2:15 p.m. The store is amongst a strip of several stores along a main street. Outfits were easy, casual, and comfortable. I saw vintage t-shirts on some of the men with the names of rock bands (new and old) or local restaurants, which would indicate the influence of music on the men’s choices of shirts and the influence of local businesses. The women or moms mostly were wearing casual, modest, and appropriate tops with shorts or jeans that may have been purchased somewhere like Target, Wal-Mart, or TJMaxx. Mass production of separates and ready-to-wear clothes for women was made possible in the 1880s and still remains a great way to add variety to a wardrobe (Frings, 2008). The sons, young boys, or teens were wearing plain t-shirts or something with SpongeBob, a superhero, or a children’s television show character on it. The older folks over age 60 were wearing items that did not seem new and probably have been in their wardrobe for years. Some wore simple styles, such as a plain cotton tee or a button down shirt with plain bottoms indicating that perhaps they are limited with their income, not keen on keeping up with fashion, or have been influenced by classic effortless …show more content…

With most of them having the same type of outfit, even though they were in different colors, sizes, or patterns, this exhibits conformity. They might be thinking, “I am just going to Wal-Mart” and right away know in their mind what other shoppers will be wearing and therefore, which clothes they will pull out of their closet. They chose shorts or pants and tops that are conducive to the season’s weather and shoes that were comfortable without high heels, such as sandals and athletic shoes. These types of clothes are economical to buy. They were also visiting an economical store, which perhaps shows a desire for budgeting and purchasing affordable items that are fairly well made. The impact of global trade on fashion and clothing is that cheaper fabrics are often used. If clothes production is done in places such as Taiwan, India, and China, the fabrics can be purchased locally at better prices. The clothing is shipped to the U.S. and ends up in local stores at reasonable prices. The desire for self-expression was evident because even though the outfits were based off of a similar uniform of separates with a top and bottom, no one was wearing the exact same pattern of any item, style of top, color of bottom, or style of shoe that I noted.
