Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “We are going to have peace even if we have to fight for it.” This quote is an accurate description of the mindset during both World War 1 and World War 2. There are many aspects of war that can be compared and contrasted. I am going to compare and contrast World War 1 and World War 2. I will explain how they started, what happened or changed during both, and how they ended. War begins with a conflict, sometimes it can be avoidable but for both of the World Wars, I think they were unstoppable. “Though it was not the bloodiest nor most prolonged war in history, nor strictly, as it was later termed, the ‘first’ World War, it was the most intensely fought struggle and the greatest in geographical extent to …show more content…
Italy, Romania, Greece, and the United States all joined in a year or two after the war had started. The Central Power was made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and later Bulgaria. Another thing World War 1 had in common with World War 2 was, “It was the also the first of two wars whose central issue was the control of German power” (Roberts & Westad, pg. 886). The Second World War was started because Germany wanted to control all land of Europe. It started after Hitler came into power in Germany. He created an army of his followers, which were called Nazis. Germany, a few months later, seized Austria first and then Czechoslovakia later. The Second World War started after Germany attacked Poland on September 1 1939. Two days later, Great Britain and France declared war on Germany. Just like the First World War, there were allegiances in place so that if one went to war then the other ones did too. Only this time there were not as many countries that had first joined in as in the First World War. One difference between World War 1 and World War 2 was that in World War 1, Germany felt threatened so that is why they went to war. In World War 2, Great Britain and France went to war because they felt threatened. Both of the World Wars started after different events happened but for the same reason of Germany being greedy. Throughout both of the World Wars, there were many new technological advances. During the First World
World War II started when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. This action started the war and violated the Treaty of Versailles, which was signed by Germany after World War I. When World War I ended, the treaty of Versailles was put into place on June 28, 1919. This treaty changed the boundaries of Germany, ordered Germany to pay for all the destruction it caused, and made sure it never invaded another country (“World War I: Treaties and Reparations”). When Hitler got into power he wanted nothing to do with this treaty, and he canceled it.
“Freedman breaks down the Great War into key battles and issues, covering the causes of the war, the leaders, the modern weapons and technology, and the war 's consequences. Firsthand accounts of allied and German soldiers are presented as well.”(Miller). The start of the war that every country was part of. It was the War that changed everybody 's lives. The War was an outbreak to to all of the countries. “Only when the world went to war again in the 1930s and ’40s did the earlier conflict become known as the First World War. Its casualty totals were unprecedented, soaring into the millions. World War I is known for the extensive system of trenches from which men of both
All of us know how devastating world wars can be and we are all aware of how mankind has already experienced two world wars, but as it turns out some individuals might not know what they truly have in common. Many secrets have been kept throughout the years and many have been unveiled, but some might not see or know that both of the wars have similar connections. Upon further inspection of the evidence presented on both the wars, one may also find many differences that crucially set them apart. A large number of people might just brush it off as World War I being somewhat of a trench war, whilst World War II was just a genocidal war where most people died due to the holocaust. Both of these aspects are somewhat true, but there is certainly
World War one started in 1914 and ended in 1918, and World War two started in 1939 and ended in 1945. In both wars, Germany and its allies had major parts in the beginning of the conflicts. World war one was fought between the Triple Entente & Italy versus Germany and Austria-Hungary & the Ottoman Empire. The results for both wars were almost the same. In World War one, no army lost; however, Germany politically lost everything, or most, of what she had. While in World war two, Germany surrendered after Hitler’s suicide. World War one took place in Europe, Middle East, and China, while world War two Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Both World Wars were fought in different ways. World War One was fought in a defensive manner from the
There is an eleven-year gap between World War I and World War II. Although there were things worked out during World War II I do not believe that this war was just a continuation of the first. World War I and World War II have many differences and that brought different
Have you ever wonder how difficult war can be and what you have you have to go through able to survive and the brutality of war in general? WW1 was the first modern warfare because it was the time when people were inventing modern invention such as planes, tank, etc. and the guns were more accurate now. WW1 was very brutal and many people died and it changed people throughout the war. WW1 was a brutal war it was the time were technologies were modern. The brutality and modernity if the battle changed soldiers and although soldiers were excited about the war that soon changed as the battle dragged on for four years. Before the war people were excited because they didn't really know what was gonna happen. During the war they started using chemical
Many events lead up to World War II in Europe starting with the Treaty of Versailles. Germany was crippled by the repayment extremely large sums of money that they had to repay to after World War I. The government couldn’t function which left its economy shattered and people hungry. Adolf Hitler came into power because he presented hope to its people. He detested the Treaty of Versailles that placed on Germany. He slowly began to take over Austria, Czechoslovakia and many other countries. He rearmed Germany to begin the big fight. Japan even grew larger by taking over Manchuria and China. Italy took over part of South Africa. Eventually they all joined forces against France, Britain and America. The Great Depression caused many economic downturns to many countries in Europe, which left them open to dictators to begin World War II.
World War 1 was not the war to end all wars because it is human nature to always want more or at least to be jealous of others. We may feel great and our lives may seem perfect but there will most likely always be that one thing that we wish we still had or had in the first place and some people do not know how to control their power and feelings which would lead to them fusing together and using the power to attempt to achieve that state of content that they want. I feel that there will be more wars like this to come, increasing in size and devastation, and until we can reach true companionship with each other and start getting to work solving other problems we must first stop having these petty fights about our differences.
Humanity was forever changed after the wars of the 20th century. World War I and World War II are known for the millions of military and civilian lives they took away. Horrific words such as concentration camps, slave labor and genocide are linked to the wars. They are also credited to causing nations to rapidly come up and develop brilliant new inventions, warfare tactics and revolutionary ideas that are still playing intricate roles in modern day societies. Both of these wars were accredited to the implementation of new technology and weapons. Many treaties and agreements were drafted, written and implemented in the aftermath of the war and reconstruction plans were carefully put together. The world famous war
World War 1 ended in 1918 with no clear victors, making the road to recovery hard to navigate. The interwar period was unstable and a number of events and circumstances arguably made the Second World War inevitable. Marshal Ferdinand Foch described the interwar years as “not a peace” but “an armistice for twenty years” (Paul Reynolds: Memoires: 1963: p.457). The breakdown of economics, the failure of post-war treaties and the rise of Hitler are all events that meant that the outbreak of World War II was almost unpreventable and the interwar years were simply a pause between wars.
In 1919, at the end of the Great War, the Big Four; the US, Great Britain, France, and Italy, were trying to figure out where to lay the blame. Great Britain and France wanted Germany to take all of the blame, which in turn would make it a very weak nation. The United States on the other hand did not want to blame anyone. The US, Great Britain, and France came up with the Treaty of Versailles. The United States came up with the League of Nations, but Britain and France were able to lay all of the blame on Germany, crippling them beyond repair, or so they thought. Since Germany took all the blame they felt the need for revenge, thus starting the territorial take over in 1936. World War II began when countries decided to start invading other. The US managed to stay out of the war for approximately two years, until they were dragged in by Japan, when the war was over all of the Axis powers received repercussions.
The First World War ended on of the most peaceful times in European history; while the era had not been without war they had been few and far between. That all changed during World War I. While the first War receives less notoriety then the Second World War it may have had a bigger impact on our view of war and conquest. The long term causes of the war can best be seen in the mind of Europeans and their governments, the rise of imperialism and colonization, the rise of nationalism, and the out dated view of war.
The forward movement of history has a way of changing our view of a historical event. Such a case is found in World War I. While WWI was being fought, it was “The Great War” and the “war to end all wars.” So horrific and widespread was the war that no one at the end of the war could contemplate another world war with even greater barbarity and more casualties. Yet within a generation, The Great War had become not a final war, but Part 1 of the terrifying drama of World War. How could the world go from a “war to end all wars” to World War II, and in such a short time? Social disillusionment and uncertainly combined with economic depression resulted in unstable political conditions and the creation and adoption of new ideologies. These circumstances and beliefs led inevitably in one fateful direction—world war.
World War I and World War II are perhaps two of the most significant and negatively impacting instances within our history. With millions of casualties, many rivalries and the pure brutality that continues to haunt us to present day. How these wars were started and played out are quite
Wars and conflicts among states were one of the main designers of International Relations and the international system in general. War is something that’s unavoidable and eventually happens. World War One (WWI) was a time of struggle for Europe. Many factors lead to tensions within Europe -- sparking the need for war. The war occurred between 1914 until 1918 and was mainly fought between the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary) and the Allied Powered (Great Britain, France, and Russia). Eventually, countries such as the US joined in. Before WWI, these tensions brewing in Europe were for competing for land and power; it was a matter of time before war broke out. There are perspectives that examine the origin and the explanation to
