Waukegan is one of the oldest communities in Illinois. Waukegan began as Potawatomie Indian settlement, Little Fort, and a French trading post. In 1829 the Potawatomie Indians ceded their land to the federal government in 1829. Between 1844 and 1846, the population grew from 150 to 750 people and then became incorporated in 1859 when the population rose to 2,500. On March 31, 1849 Little Fort changed its name to Waukegan, the Potawatomie word for “fort” or “trading post”. Growth in Waukegan can be accredited to industry and railroads. Some of the industry included ship and wagon building, dairying, flour milling, pork packing and sheep raising. The most successful was brewing of malt liquors. In the late 1860’s William Besley’s Waukegan …show more content…
John-Manville Corp is the site of 150-acre asbestos disposal. Around 3 million cubic yards of specification products and wastewater sludge were disposed of at the site. They stopped operations in the site in 1998 and former manufacturing buildings were torn down in 2000-2001. Asbestos is the main problem, during clean up asbestos contamination was found outside of the fence line. Outboard Marine Corporation is on the north section of the Waukegan Harbor. It was an outboard-boat-motor manufacturing plant. The contaminants include PCB’s, OMC that are used in hydraulic fluids, and TCE. Yeoman Creek Landfill is on the northwest side of Waukegan. The landfill was open from 1959-1969. The landfill did not have a bottom liner and the soil was permeable. The liquid from the landfill contained chemicals with elevated concentrations of metals and ammonia. Gas from the landfill was detected off site. North Shore Gas North Plant has was contaminated with residuals the past plan operations. North Shore Gas South Plant includes 1.9 acre former MGP facility along Pershing Road and bordering areas where MGP residuals are now found. MGP’s are industrial facilities that produced gas from coal, oil, and other
Throughout the operation and dismantling of the refinery, various types of wastes including cloth filters, fuller 's earth, oil sludge, contaminated soil, pesticides, heavy metals, and fly ash were generated and disposed of in two on-site landfills adjacent to the Genesee River over a 30-year period. The landfill area of the site consisted of a 9-acre Central Elevated Landfill Area, a 2-acre South Landfill Area, and a 1-acre sand and gravel area between the two landfills. The landfill area was located at the very southern end of
Assessments began to take place in the mid 1980’s, shortly after the site made the National Priorities list in 1983. Relevant standards and guidance levels were used to measure the effect of the Helen Kramer Landfill. The initiation of the EPA’s remedial investigation and feasibility study deemed the nature of the Helen Kramer landfill as an extreme risk to the environment, characterizing the site “by randomly placed, uncompacted, and uncovered refuse, with numerous settlement cracks which vented methane and water vapor” (2). According to the EPA, several million gallons of chemical wastes and over two million cubic yards of solid waste were estimated to have been disposed of at the landfill (2). Studies were performed by the EPA, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, federal natural resource trustees in the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to evaluate the onsite and nearby environmental effects due to the landfill. During these studies, contaminants were detected in air, sediments, and aquifers, including high levels of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals in the air and sediments. VOCS and heavy metals expose humans to carcinogens, developmental toxicants, and reproductive toxicants. The assessments also detected numerous contaminants such as (but not limited to),
The next Superfund that has greatly influenced the environment of Butler County is the Skinner Landfill. The Landfill is on 85 acres in West Chester (2). The facility was privately owned and was never actually licensed, so it closed in the 1970's (5). The landfill contains about 100 drums of chlorinated organics, and heavy metals. Along with the presence of the drums is the fact that a nearby lagoon was once used as a disposal for these contaminants, and that the site had problems with unauthorized dumping (5). Fortunately, no contaminants have been discovered leaving the site (5). The presence of these
The years after the was when Dubuque really prospered, immigration shot through the roof when the railroad companies came to Dubuque. Many German families immigrated in search of jobs. Lead mining was no longer the center of the city, due to its spot on the river, and other cities forming along the river. Dubuque became a large transport hub. The logging business also took off in Dubuque around this
In the city of Longtown,Ohio,Founded by James Clemens,is a peaceful place where blacks and white did not discriminate each other, or at least it use to be. Now,the people of Longtown are fading from the world and White settlers are buying their land.Longtown was made by James Clemens,a freed slave from the state of Virginia, made this settlement so whites and blacks can live in harmony and peace together, but now that everyone is dying and settlers are buying their land, James’ great grandson,Connor Keiser, is trying to keep the way of life going or in other words Connor Keiser said,” We were the usual Longtown family. We all look different, and we were taught that color didn’t matter. As long as I have anything to do with it,Longtown
In days long when many non-whites were racially segregated , and/or discriminated, making a colored community was unthinkable. That was until one man named James Clemens, a freed slave, broke that barrier, and established Longtown Ohio. The uniqueness of the community, though, was that it was a sanctuary for many different races that were unfit for other communities. This was a place where many different races could interact with each other peacefully. If Riverside, or even our country as a whole had this type of ideology, then there is a likelihood that we would all live in harmony, and safety. It's time we take some ideas from Longtown, and apply them to our country/Riverside. An article published by The Washington Post, “ Ohio Town holds rare history: Races

Joliet city is located near the Des Plaines River, which it makes divide the township into two parts. It is the capital city of Will County (Liebe et al., 850). The Hickory creek enters the city from the east uniting with the Plaines which makes the town well watered. The city is mainly covered with limestone and other stone quarries that have made excellent building stones. From the time when Illinois and the Michigan canals were opened in 1848 and the building of the Rock Island as well as other railroads, limestone has been taken to Chicago and other Middle East places in large qualities. Joliet also has timber that was used in furnishing the buildings made by the early settler. Notably, the settlers in the township were mostly from
From the cities infancy Aurora has been a front-runner in innovation, in fact; Aurora was the first town in Illinois to light its streets with electric lights, and with this improvement, the small town began to expand. In addition to the light system,
On the lower Mississippi River on March 19, 1968 around 0340 the SS African collided with the Midwest Cities, a towing vessel, which was transporting two tank barges. The front barge was the Intercity no. 14 and the rear was the Intercity no. 11. Intercity no. 11 was loaded with 19,000 barrels of crude oil. The crude oil’s combustible vapors escaped during the collision and led to a serious shipboard fire on the SS African Star.
CNN)A gas leak at a Motel 6 in Bremerton, Washington, caused an explosion so severe it brought down a section of the building and flung firefighters 20 feet away.
In 1896 the town of Bemidji was derived from Europeans settling here for the foreseen fortune they saw in the trees. Logging was the industrial core for this fast developing town. Now, one is aware of the logging history of Bemidji by the large tourist attraction that has stood beside the lake since 1988, Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, one of the loggers’ favorite folk stories to pass on for years to come.
Joliet, Illinois later to be known as the City of Stone and Steel was settled in the early 1830’s and established in 1852, located just 40 miles southwest of Chicago, is a town rich in history, diversity and devotion from its current 148,000 residents. (1) The I&M Canal, Route 66, the Joliet Arsenal , the architecture and Joliet Junior College are just a few of the that had made Joliet a extraordinary town throughout history. However, it’s not without an obscure and sordid side that I have found through my attempt at research has been difficult to find. On Sunday afternoon April 30, 2017, I spoke to an employee at the Joliet History Museum who explained that for years the dark history within Joliet was covered up
Because of the railroad being built on this land that was all dense woodland and the steam engines in this area ran only on wood, the lumbering industry began. Sawmills were build all around the land that is now today Portage. Then with the new founding of coal, coal mines were also being built. This had a great economic impact on this land and in the 1860’s and 1870’s settlers began to flood into this area; most of these settlers were English and German speaking people (Portage Centennial Book Committee, 1990, p.7-8). During this time there was a town called old Portage and a town next to it called New Portage. In 1878 the old Portage would be changed to Portage Township and on October 7, 1890 new Portage
