For many Packer students, the internet filters on their laptops are a complete mystery. A search or website is blocked, and the reasoning and technology behind it is generally completely unknown. Recently, there’s been a shift in the packer communities internet access, which has been equally as misunderstood yet substantially more jarring to the average student. Do you think schools should have web filters? In the last few years, kids were asked what they think of their schools having web filters. They all said different things such as schools should and should not have web filters. To be honest, I think web filters should not exist.
It was the early 2000s, and I would always ask my parents if I could use their desktop computer to do one task: surf the web. Sometimes they would let me, sometimes they will not; when they do, hype ensues. Through one Sony computer, I am about to enter a still-young digital world that seemed to have no limits. The Internet was continuing to grow in spite of the dot-com bubble. While I appreciated the overall potential computers had at the time, I saw the Internet as a big deal. This is not because it would bring us Google and Twitter, but because it was a neat way to play time-killing games in Cartoon Network, Nick, or Disney’s sites. Internet censorship is the control or suppression of the publishing or accessing of information on the Internet. This can include blocking entire websites, blocking parts of certain websites, prohibiting certain search engine keywords, monitoring individual internet use, and punishing individuals for this use. On a smaller scale, companies censor access to certain websites to increase productivity in workers or decrease chances of a sexual harassment lawsuit. Parents may block certain website on their family computers in an attempt to maintain their child’s innocence. On a much larger scale, entire governments can censor or track the Internet use of its constituents.
Students are able to get on websites that should be blocked, but they aren’t able to get on sites they really need. Filters to block students are effective, but do they guarantee that effectiveness? Paul Resnick says, “Yes, with the right software tools you can selectively block access from some people.” But Lewis argues against this. He includes in his article that trying to keep a bunch of people from doing what they want is very difficult, which is why a lot of the websites are unblocked.

This effort, however, is useless if students can’t actually use the internet to effectively research and study for school purposes. Many schools across the nation rely on webfilter companies to block “inappropriate” websites for them. These web filters are unnecessary. Schools should have unblocked internet and refrain from using filters because they don’t fulfill their job, they are easy to go around, and they are very stressful.

On October 24, 2007, Councilmember Pete Constant asked for a policy that would install filters on library public access computers in order to reduce or eliminate children from viewing lewd material (Light, 2008). On April 21, 2009, City Council rejected spending the money for the technology required to implement the use of filters. The Council voted 7-3 to approve a reminder system for users, which would state exposing children to pornography is illegal (Woolfolk, 2009). Despite the rejection to use filters, in 2014 Jill Bourne revisited the idea by discussing how the filtering programs have evolved. Bourne planned to test two new programs, Websense and SquidGuard, which cost a fraction of what they would five years prior (Rodriguez, 2014).
