I think I speak for many people when I say high school is a critical point in one’s life. Coming into high school, things seemed to be tightly-knitted between my peers and I; those of us who had just
In Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World, Huxley creates a futuristic world governed by conformity and submission to society. Citizens of this World State are conditioned to follow a set lifestyle determined at birth in order to create a stable civilization. However, there is still some form of individuality in each person, specifically in the characters Bernard, Lenina, and Linda. Within each of these characters, their difference in personality does not fit the norms of society, and they therefore try to suppress their own traits with unique methods such as soma. In times of sadness and despair, Bernard, Lenina, and Linda each give up a part of their own individuality and ideology, sticking to the
My high school years, unlike the past years of steady achievements, felt much more like a sine graph with ups and downs. To begin with, I conquered my freshman year in a breeze. My easily achievable classes not only earned myself confidence, but also admiration and respect from my classmates and teachers. As a result, I comfortably acclimated myself to the status of a star student.
Heading from middle school to high school can seem somewhat intimidating to the average teenager. No more will you be in the safety of those peers you grew up with as you head off to the larger high school that allows you to blend in with grades 9th through 12th. Many first time freshman year high school students are filled with mixed emotions on this next chapter in their life. Today I am sharing some tips on how to survive freshman year at high school so that you can help your teenager relax and breeze through the first days of being a high school freshman.
An American culture of strict conformity accounts for the rise of the phenomenon known as the Red Scare, as well as its widespread nature and prominent power. The Red Scare was complicated and a result of many different aspects of American culture. However the American culture in the 1950’s was one of strict conformity. This conformist society, created in the late 1940’s was created by many early discoveries that uncovered Communist members as Soviet spies. There arose a prevalent belief that anyone who thought differently was unpatriotic. This conformist nature of American society thus resulted in few organizations fighting for social justice. The Communist party therefore attracted a wide range of liberals from different aspects of life. Joseph McCarthy himself, along with many other governmental officials, was able to institute anti-communist laws and practices under the pretense that an unwavering conformity was the American goal. The conformist nature of American society in the 1950’s created one of the most powerful anti-communist crusades and allowed for a dominant Red Scare.
High school High school is a very crucial part of everybody’s life filled with many learning moments and also times that most would like to never redo. This being said we all go through this time and we can all relate to the stereotypes that come along with high school. Some were on the top and others were on the bottom, but everyone had their specific place.
Today is the first day that I set foot into Central High School, one of the most prestigious high schools in Philadelphia. The blood rushes through my veins as I allow that fact to sink in. I climb up the steep hill, focused solely on trying to make my way to the deep red doors as other students, one by one, join their respective social groups.
High school can be a rough time for many students. The tremendous pressure from your parents, teachers, peers, and yourself can be overwhelming, but following these tips can make it a little bit easier. If you show respect to others, prepare for tests and quizzes, and remember to take a breather, you will be a better, more successful student here at Maconaquah High
In this dystopian world the people are dependant upon soma at anytime when unpleasant thoughts, feelings or emotions are shown. Soma can drive any bad thoughts out of mind. Doctors declare that one cubic centimeter of soma cures ten gloomy sentiments. Like soma drug in Brave New World, in The Giver, there is a relief-of-pain medication that is provided to community members to relieve their pains so that no one can suffer. Whenever there is any kind of unpleasant thought or pain or disease, people are immediately given this unnamed medication.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” Becoming yourself while not conforming is the greatest accomplishment. Whether or not we think we do it or not, we all have done it at some point in our lives. In 1964, a young woman named Kitty Genovese was murdered outside of her apartment. Many people heard this innocent woman being brutally murdered and just assumed someone would help. So why do people just assume someone will help? Why are we so scared to stand up for what we believe? Why are we so terrified to stick out? Stop conforming and be an individual.
The beginning of high school is the start to the next four years of hell. No one wants to be there. Everyone says, “these will be the best four years of your life!” Along with, “it goes by so fast,” and, “in the blink of an eye,” but the truth is, I don’t see it. Every waking moment I have to sit through a lecture in a cold, solid, chair is like sitting silently next to your parent in a car as they scold you for what you’ve done. You can’t go anywhere, or say anything. You just have to embrace it.
In the article title “Individuality vs. Conformity: The Healthy Middle?” by an anonymous high school student it says that there are only two thing that a typical high school student wants to typically achieve in their short high school life (par. 1). One of these things is to fit in (par. 2). The second one is to be different (par. 3). How could you do this?. You could choose to be individual or just conform. However I really maintain the idea that what we should really do it's to stay in the middle so we won't forget who we really are and still be liked by different groups of people.
Throughout my life, many people have impacted me. Whether it be a teacher, a fellow classmate, a parent, or even a celebrity, someone has influenced me in some way. I have found that the older I get, the more I really think about life and what really matters in this world. Some people would say that materialistic items are the key to happiness, while others will disagree by saying that possessions cannot fill the void in your life forever. There will always be something that you will want so that you can maintain the happiness that is put into possessions. Others will say that conformity is a popular thing in society and the only way to be happy is to conform to the way society says you should. Many people will completely agree with that because they are afraid to stand out in a world that tells them it is not okay to be different or to be an individual. If you want to be truly happy, one must break away from the chains of conformity. To live in a world that tells us who we should be is the greatest waste that anyone could fall susceptible to.
To conform or to not conform is the real question. Google defines conformity as “Compliance with standards, rules, or laws.” I define conformity as someone going along with society although they may or may not believe it’s the right thing to do. The people who refuse to conform to society are called nonconformist. Although both conformity and nonconformity has its benefits, it can also be unfavorable for you. In other words, IT SUCKS!! And this demonstrated through both fictional stories and in real life. Two very good examples are Snowball the pig (conformist) from the book “Animal Farm” By George Orwell and Summer Pimp (nonconformist) who used to be one of my good friends.
