What Does Thanksgiving Mean To Me

Every year before I eat the big Thanksgiving meal, I stop and think about what I’m thankful for. My family, friends, and health are important to me.

What does your family do on thanksgiving? My family compared to other family’s might do something the same or something different It all depends on the family. My family does different things, goes different places, and eats certain food on Thanksgiving. Everyone’s family does something different on thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Holiday means so much to me. I love to celebrate that extended weekend with my family. On the eve of the big day, my cousins and I meet at an elder’s house and then the festivities began. This shared feast started in 1621 with the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians sharing a harvest feast ("Thanksgiving," 2016). A portion of the food can be prepared the day before. We decide who would handle what task and when it time clean up the second generation, always try to make the third generation do it. We then continue to cook and clean and reminisce of our past year. Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for all of our rights and the things that we have. We are very thankful to come home every day to a nice home with food and water, some people don’t have the nice things that we have. The rights that I am thankful for as a citizen of this country are the freedom of religion and the freedom of speech.

When they got all their food ready, English and Native American men, women, and children ate and played games. They ate food such as turkey, corn, shellfish, and deer. This feast lasted 3 days and during those 3 days both the English and Native American ate as one. Thanksgiving to me means family time and a chains to be thankful for all we have our family, our wonderful country, and all the things we are blessed to have. Every year we go to our Mimi’s and Papa’s for thanksgiving, it is my family, my Mimi and Papa, and my Uncle's family. As soon as you walk through the door you can smell the wonderful aroma of food, and when you walk into the kitchen you can see a table adorned with an abundant amount. Then we all gather around the table and pry as we thank god for all he has given use and then we get our plates so we can serve ourselves. While we are eating we have some comical conversations that makes us laugh, we also talk about what we have been doing.

Thanksgiving is more than just a day off or a break from school, it’s more than just a holiday. It’s more than just stuffing your face with mash potatoes and turkey. It's a time to fellowship and give thanks. This year has brought about multiple challenges, but we have stayed faithful and strong as a family. There is nothing more powerful than our family. God has blessed me with such a solicitous family.

There are many different ways how so spend Thanksgiving. Some people spend Thanksgiving at home doing nothing, some even spend it on the streets. Some people aren't even home with their family, they are serving other people food and helping at food banks so that the people on the streets have food. Most of the people that I know spend it with their families and have a great time. The classmates that I interviewed do the same as well.

This event goes beyond me extending itself towards the community receiving its influence by the educational teachings of the Thanksgiving feast between the Pilgrims and the Indians, though misinterpreted it served as a pretext for this great celebration recounting the feast shared between the two surrounding the harvest. Children wore Indian hats and designed turkey feathers by tracing their hand out of construction paper to showcase this holiday. Furthermore, it was set aside as a National Holiday by President Lincoln to be observed by the American people because of the North finding favor during the time of war. In 1621, the Plymouth Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered to share in an autumn harvest feast we know today as Thanksgiving. The term thanksgiving wasn’t thought of until the Civil War in 1863 when Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it a national day in November. Peace and thanksgiving among the Indians and the Pilgrims would cease to exist if it wasn’t for the Mayflower which carried the passengers ashore.
