The word leadership can mean different things to different individuals. It brings variety of images to our minds as well. It can be from a political leader like Hamid Karzai or Obama, an inspirational person like Ahmad Shah Massoud, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, or Martin Luther King, an executive like Steve Jobs and for some people it can be someone like Osama Bin Laden, one determined “leader”, who was able to successfully encourage hundreds of his followers to sacrifice their lives. For me Leadership is open-ended as it is so broadly used, but I perceive a leader someone who is a role model in any field and can successfully take the followers to achieve the objectives they ultimately pursue.
Leadership is a broadly used concept which needs to be defined narrowly. One way is to define the context in which it is used and the process within which it fits. Moreover, theories on leadership have explored and studied it from many angels. Trait Theory of leadership asks what type of person makes a good leader. Moreover, early trait theories said that leadership is an innate, instinctive quality that you do or don 't have. Thankfully, we 've moved on from this idea, and we 're learning more about what we can do to develop leadership qualities within ourselves and others. In contrast behavioral theories studies what good leaders do and how they behave. For instance, do leaders dictate what needs to be done and expect cooperation? Or do they involve their teams in decision-making to
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
When we think of leadership, what comes to mind? Is it the bold, charismatic, and passionate person who takes the group on their back? Or is it really the more quiet and realistic leader who has a compromising attitude? Most people will think of a loud and passionate person who can grab the attention of an audience. But leaders come in all shapes and sizes. Leadership is defined by dictionary.com as the ability to guide or influence others to achieve a common goal. Although the term leader is used in our everyday lives, many people mistake it for close synonyms. Not all leaders have to be the boisterous, bold, and burly people that most people think of them to be. More often than not, a leader will be the commanding one in the group. But there
Leadership can be defined as the ability of a company 's management to make sound decisions and inspire others to perform well (Investopedia, 2014). From the beginning of time, in the middle of all the major changes and historical events there where effective and motivated leaders having a wide sphere of influence and inspiring other groups of people to be creative and efficient. A leader is defined as a person or thing that holds a dominant or superior position within its field, and is able to exercise a high degree of control or influence over others (businessdictionary,2014).Leaders have always played a major role in the evolution of technology as well as in forming the very lifestyle of today’s society. Effective leaders are able to set and achieve challenging goals, to take swift and decisive action even in difficult situations, to outperform their competition, to take calculated risks and to persevere in the face of
Leadership is generally viewed as black and white. Someone who stepped up and took charge and did what no one else was willing. Someone who was able to control the masses through eloquent flourishes of the tongue and guide them safely through hardships when there seemed to be no light at the end of the tunnel. A leader is someone who overcame himself so he could overcome others, but then again is that the only kind of leader? Leadership is not always sought.
Leadership is something that people are born with. It is an inherent charm and it doesn’t hide even if you want to hide it. There is a leader amongst us and he or she is the one that leads other people to great things by inspiring and motivating people to do good deeds. Leadership has been described as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. This way a leader can decide what work goes in and goes out. Good leaders in history have left a mark in walks of life. But great leaders, they’re different. Great leaders have the ability to make each and every individual re-think their life decisions and choices by
The definition of leadership has different kinds of meanings to me. Having leadership could be a person that has done a great impact on society or has just done something that has made someone feel better. Leaders have a great responsibility probably the most difficult job for a leader is to persuade others to follow. It can only be possible if the leader inspires there followers by setting a good example. When the going gets tough, they look up to a leader and see how they react to the situation. If they can handle it well. As a leader, they should think positive and this positive approach should be visible through their actions. Some great leader over the years has had left a legacy that other people can look up to. And feel inspired to
I define leadership as the ability to seek out and empower others to influence their generation and society for the greater good. A leader is a mentor. To me, a leader is someone who helps themselves and others to do the right things. They are people who build an inspiring vision of the future, motivates and inspires people to engage in that vision. They lead and work with others so that it is effective at achieving the vision. Leaders also set directions. They practice in the act of planning things out and leading a group/organization. Leaders have high management skills to guide people to a successful future, in an efficient way. Leadership is also the ability to see a problem and be the solution.
According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.
Leadership is the ability or authority to guide and direct others towards achievement of goal without force that leaves them feeling empowered and accomplished. Besides, leader has a significant impact on ethical decision making. This is because leaders have the power to motivate others and enforce the organization norms and policies as well as their own viewpoint. Leadership involves establishing a clear vision, sharing that vision with others, providing the information, knowledge and methods to realize that vision, coordinating
My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders are developed through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and
Leadership is an important topic to every organization, society, or group of people with a goal of accomplishing something. Whether it is a world super power nation or a book club, elements of leadership play a role in achieving or not achieving objectives. There are definitely some differences between governing a nation and organizing a book club, but the point is leadership and leaders influence almost every aspect our lives. There are countless descriptions of leadership types, characteristics, and philosophies of what makes a leader successful. To discuss leadership, it is useful to define the term. According to the dictionary, a leader is a person who manages or controls (Cambridge Dictionary, 2015). There are many cases where
Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam-Webster Dictionary leadership is the “office or position of a leader” (Miriam-Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is “the ability someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal.” Some may add to this definition, others may discard it altogether and have a completely different definition. In the end, leadership takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care?
What is leadership? According to Moore, (1927, p. 124) the term leadership is defined by ‘the ability to impress the will of the leader on those led and induce obedience, respect, loyalty, and cooperation’ (as cited by Northouse, 2017, p. 2). The word has a positive connotation to it when you think of certain leaders. When I hear it I immediately envision some of our great leaders of the past and present such as; Martin Luther King Jr. and Christiane Amanpour. Each of these leaders have demonstrated good leadership in their lives and we can all learn from them.
According to OED, leadership is “ One who guides others in action or opinion; one who takes the lead in any business, enterprise, or movement; one who is followed by disciples or adherents’ the chief of a sect of party; also in wider sense, a person eminent position and influence…” (as cited in Toor and Ofori, 2008, p.63). “Leader influences others by his or her ability, persuasiveness, and vision” (Toor and Ofori, 2008, p.63).
Leadership does not have one universally accepted definition; it is according me an ever-evolving concept. I firmly believe that even though individuals can be groomed and trained to be leaders, however some leaders could motivate and influence individuals around them more effectively/easily then others and direct an organization into a coherent and cohesive way in order to accomplish objectives and targets. This exact school of thought is actually a common thread or an existing element in various theories and
