I have worked in every area of the hospital and nursing homes in my nineteen years of clinical practice as a nurse. I have excelled and enjoyed the care that I have provided over the years. I have been a charge nurse wherever I have worked and enjoyed brainstorming and critically thinking through what needed to be done for a patient when they were not doing well. I have prevented many code blues and have been a preceptor to many excellent nurses.

In addition, a DNP degree will help me better serve my community by advocating for quality and safety healthcare system. Being a nurse not only means compassion, dedication, and intelligence, but the profession also requires endurance, personal sacrifice, and the need for continuous education. I have learned that nurses are some of the most caring and selfless people that anyone will ever meet. Nursing had never been in my passion when I was younger because the image of a nurse in a white uniform holding a tray full of loaded syringes, frightened me. To me the nurses were ruthless individuals who made the children cry with injections. However a nice, gentle, and sympathetic nurse who took care of me when I was hospitalized with a foot fracture, changed my opinions about the nurses. For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to work in the medical field. From performing imaginary check ups on my community of dolls as a child to watching medical television shows, being able to enter the workforce with the skills to start a nursing career has been my most desired goal from a young age. When it comes to achieving that goal, hard work, dedication, and my lifelong passion for pursuing nursing will get me where I need to be in order to successfully complete Davenport University’s Nursing Program.

Graduating from Duke University has been my dream for as long as I can remember. The mission of Duke’s school of nursing corresponds with my goal to improve the quality of life for people in my community; a poor, rural area. Always fascinated by anatomy and physiology, in high school I first took a health occupations class. I was immediately captivated with taking this knowledge that came so easily to me, and using it to help others improve their health and well-being.

Nursing has always been a passion of mine ever since I began working on the Pediatric unit at the University of Arizona Medical Center. I thought by interning here, I would make a difference in someone’s life. However, those kids and family members were the ones who had the biggest impact on me. These kids taught me the importance of perseverance during difficult times which gave me the motivation and passion to work hard in my courses to get a 3.7 gpa.

I believe that nursing is both and art and a science consisting of psychosocial and biological sciences that work together to continually improve the health care field. I believe that with the knowledge and clinical experience from the TVCC ADN program I will be able to provide the best care possible to the people in the community. In today’s society, the medical field is constantly thriving with technological improvements and the growth of educated individuals that contribute to the well-being of others.
