Five years ago, I was inspired by a TEDTalks presented by, Jamie Oliver, a healthy living activist, and chef. He explained that we spend our lives being paranoid about death by murder or accidents, yet pointed out that in reality, the most common causes of death were all diet-related. Surprisingly, homicide was at the very bottom of the list.
That was a wake-up call for me. I realized, the choices we make each time we put food in our mouths impact our daily quality of life and have a profound effect on our long-term health. I wanted to be part of the solution, and thus my journey in dietetics and nutrition began.
As a teen, I worked in a scratch kitchen, where I had the unique opportunity to learn the essentials of cooking without using processed ingredients. I learned about food marketing during my work with Nabisco as a field sales representative, and food safety and handling working with Aramark in the catering division. In addition to these jobs, I considered how I could make an impact on my peers and the community. In my sophomore year I founded an Enactus team at West Chester University.
Enactus encourages students to use entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of lives in others. At the same time, the experience helps develop socially responsible leaders. Through our endeavors we developed four projects that empowered those in need in our communities to live healthier more sustainable lives. By the end of the first year, our team was invited to the
Profit-oriented leaders of new diet fads surely would be infuriated while reading the words of Michael Pollan in his work, Unhappy Meals—not necessarily because of his aim to disprove diet fallacies but, rather, the possible ramifications of Pollan’s words on their bank accounts. Explained in the article, the world’s understanding of diets and their effects on the human body has improved steadily—if not exponentially—throughout recent history. Here, the advocates of new diets claim the changing world and its understanding of health requires changes in diet; the human body will adapt to the new times. To counter, Pollan argues that is definitely true, but we have to be open to the idea of the death that occurs during the process.
We could institute a national, comprehensive program that would make us a world leader in preventing chronic or “lifestyle” diseases, which for the first time in history kill more people than communicable ones. By doing so, we’d not only repair some of the damage we have caused by first inventing and then exporting the Standard American diet, we’d also set a new standard for the rest of the world to follow (Bittman 299).
The number of overweight people in the United States has placed the United States twenty-seventh in a ranking of the countries with the most prevalent case of an obesity epidemic. Researchers have seen the overall rate of obesity increases with the influx of advertisements showcasing unhealthy products, such as sugary drinks. Sugary drinks are “silent killers” that cause many fatalities, and health concerns for the consumer due to the deleterious ingredients they contain. Michael Pollan says in his argument that the western diet is chiefly to blame for a majority of health deceases, he says “the scientist who blame our health problems on defiances of these micronutrients are not the same scientist who see sugar-soaked diet leading to metabolic syndrome and from there to diabetes, heart deceases, and cancer” (421) Due to all this negative impact to our health Pollan says that the food industry needs new theories to better redesign processed food and the medical community to make new drugs to beget deceases.
This paper will particularly focus on the food industry and will outline the ethical issue of food marketing towards children by reviewing the existing marketing ethics literature. The paper will evaluate the ethical responsibilities of marketing managers towards the issue of food marketing towards children and its impact. The paper will also explore and propose how managers of marketing can change their strategies to improve the ethical performance of the company by analyzing theories such as business ethics, social marketing and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Because it is so cheap to make, it is also very cheap to buy. Fast food restaurants such as McDonald's and Burger King use highly processed food, too. One of my most notable teamwork experiences was my participation in Future Farmers of America (FFA). This organization helped me develop extensive leadership qualities and personal growth, in which are a vital component for academic and career success. Through this program, I gained hands-on experience serving the chapter as an FFA Executive Committee Member and a Vineyard Manager. As an FFA Executive Committee Member, I gained self-confidence and immersed myself in new experiences, such as learning how to direct events and to promote involvement in FFA. Obesity is the number 1 cause of death in America. It is a growing epidemic for people every in the United States. Obesity is a result of unhealthy eating, lack of physical activity, stress, lack of awareness of the medical problems and social problems. Our life is something that is so precious. Every choice we make impacts our life wether it be physically or mentally. When we choose to make poor life choices, it will reflect on us as individuals. Poor choices in what we consumed or how active we are will lead to a life that can lead to an early death. Obesity is an epidemic health problem that has been one of the leading causes to death. The disease itself causes sever health conditions as well as mental health issues.no one wants to become obese, but in today’s society we have been given the perfect recipe that will land us in a fight for our life. Obesity is not something that simply happens, but a lifetime of poor choices. We must discover the source of obesity and attack the health issue from the primary leading factors. We start with the source in order to help improve the lives of people everywhere who are battling this disease, as well as those who are predisposed to a higher chance of developing it.
Have you ever sat down at a fast food restaurant enjoying a delicious triple grand slam cheeseburger and think about all the strategies of how all of this was created? I know I have. The fast food industry is one of the most complex industries out there. With all the marketing strategies, healthier options, and completive markets this could easily but one of the most difficult industries to be a part of.
