The first step to being successful, no matter what you’re trying to succeed, is to recognize your weak points, your strengths, and your limits. I myself know that I have several, and when I say several, I mean several, weak points when it comes to writing papers. The first and most lethal to a student who wishes to be well, is procrastination. I will always put writing a paper off till the last minute. In fact, I’m doing it right now as I’m writing this. I’m already doing what I say I’m not supposed to be doing. You can probably tell that I’m off to a great start. I didn’t really do that in this paper, so you can relax, but in future essays, you had better watch out. You might also want to watch out for a particular mood or feeling in my writings as well. This is because I listen to music whenever I have to write, because I am normally very easily distracted by noises (and shiny objects). The former of these things I overcome by blasting music into my head, because it eliminates all of the external stimuli that can derail my entire writing process. This may sound kind-of contradictory, because I’m being distracted by noise so I put on more noise. The difference is though, that music is more of a background noise to me, while conversation always grabs my attention. Something else that grabs my attention is video; if I ever listen to music if has to be from iTunes and absolutely not from YouTube. If I know that there is something visual that goes along with what I’m hearing, then I am just pulled into watching the video. This is extremely bad for when you’re trying to write a paper, especially if you’re like me and you have to look at what you’re typing as you go along. Something that I can also do to help my writing is to always read what I wrote out loud. When I say out loud, I mean out loud! This will help me catch some of the grammatical errors that anyone can easily make, and I can also make sure that what I am writing makes sense. Something else that can help me
Success is a word that really hard to define, because everyone will have a different definition for this word. In fact, there no exact definition for the word "success". For a student, maybe the success means to pass all courses of the semester; for a business man, signing a importance contract and get a lot of money are successes; and for a president, leading the country to develop and make the people have a better life are success. For me, I also have my own definition for the word "success". When I was a kid, I really want to be a scientist, but after I become mature, my thinking has become more mature and my definition of success also
How can I become a better writer? Throughout my writing experiences, I have learned I have many weaknesses along with strengths. My experiences with writing has not always been the best, but over time, with lots of practice and instructions from my instructors, I can proudly say that I have gained a better understanding on the layout of essays and papers. As well as understanding how to write correctly my goal as a writer is to learn how to overcome my weaknesses and use my strengths to my highest ability. I have many strengths, weaknesses and goals that I plan to achieve and overcome in my college career.
What has most helped me? Possibly free-writing like now when I chase the stampeded of words that are bulldozing through my brain running form me faster than I can get them down on paper. The writing is apt to come out confused and bewildered, but then I follow Ayn Rand's recommendations I have read many writing manuals and have found hers the most valuable to just shut the brain off and write. Later, I adopt the procedure of three revisions. One is to see whether the prose makes sense to an imaginary reader. The next is to see whether I can prune words as ruthlessly as possible (sometimes, I end up annihilating too many); and thirdly to see whether grammar matches.
Natalie Goldberg in “Writing Down the Bones,” compares running to writing, “like running, the more you do it, the better you get at it. Some days you don’t want to run and you resist every step.” I believe majority student hate writing papers as much as professors grading them. They are countless reason why so many student struggle with writing. Majority of the time it’s not fun or interesting, you can feel insecurity or just can’t figures out how to compose you thought into words on paper. As the book says, “don’t try to control it. Stay present with whatever comes up, and keep your hand moving.”
Whenever I get a writing assignment for class, it seems like a chore. I don’t have a problem with writing, but papers always seem to take more time than they should. Maybe this is due to poor planning on my part, but essays are usually an ordeal, and I dread actually doing the work to finish one. The task is simple enough, but putting it off always seems like a better alternative to writing. I do think about the paper that I have to write, but I do not put thoughts and ideas into a paper or outline until I absolutely need to do so. From the moment I am given an assignment sheet, I begin brainstorming about the paper. I may not use any of these ideas, but I think of them. In my opinion, writing journal is one of the most effective way to improve my writing
English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills.
Deferring a task such as writing a paper does not necessarily mean a student's paper will turn out negatively. Although my writing has made some good progress during the course of this semester, I still some things I need to learn in order to keep improving my writing. Grammar, writing in an active voice, and building my rewrite skills are three examples of skills I need to build upon to continue to improve me writing.
There are several qualities to have to be successful in college. These qualities can range from attending class to going above and beyond what’s expected. Success comes from the journey taken or the path chosen. Success also comes from being prepared. As a student, I must step up to the challenge and find the path to success along the way. Several ways I define success is to uphold academic integrity, have the ability to prioritize, and to motivate myself to stay on top of what needs to be accomplished.
Over the course of the semester, there has been numerous amount of areas where I believe I have improved in comparison to high school. What has helped me in my writing is the writing class and the in-class writing workshop. The writing class that is located in the Kremen education building has helped me with my writing greatly because in the writing center the person in charge teach us lenses and we apply those lenses to the writing, draft, or reading that someone brings in. The in-class writing workshop has helped me because other students get to read my writing. This is helpful because I get feedback from many students and they let me know what needs to be fixed. A new tool I have been using is They Say I Say. The book is very helpful because of the information and examples it provides such as the templates. I have been applying the templates into my essays and I have seen a significant difference.
Life as a university student can be tough, but to make sure you get your money and times worth out of it you need to know how to be a successful student. Being a successful student requires a combination of attending your classes, doing your homework, and monitoring your level of stress. This may not sound too hard, but once you are in the moment and need to juggle all of these things along with all of the other responsibilities and challenges life entails it may begin to seem like a much more difficult task.
Since beginning to write papers in English class, I have had countless successes and failures. While many of my English classes have taught me how to improve my writing, I have not learned very much in others. My most recent English class was last year, my sophomore year. My class was particularly undersized; therefore, it gave each student the opportunity to have additional individual attention.
