What Is An Immigrant?

Mr. Board Chair... Colleagues and Friends. I am an immigrant. Three years ago, I recounted my story as an immigrant to this great nation, of how I became a successful family physician, and of the great sacrifices by my family and especially my father in helping me to get here. Today, again I stand before you. I 'd like to tell you my story as a digital immigrant. Yes. I am a digital immigrant and like most of you, I was not born with a silver iPad in front of my face. I was able to apply the same immigrant ethics to work and with optimism and resiliency, I am able to successfully adapt to this brave new digital world.

They slip into the San Diego rail yard furtively, preferably beneath the protective cover of darkness, jumping fences, eluding guards and dodging two hundred -ton locomotives in a perilous dash for the most elusive of prizes, a free ride to the north. According to Jose Flores, an illegal Mexican immigrant seeking work in the United States says, “To be truthful, I have no idea of precisely where this train goes, other than it takes us to el norte” (Griffin 363+). The fact that each night literally hundreds of men and women clamber over the barricade is testament to its ineffectiveness and to the irresistible pull of United States jobs “that on average pay eight times their equivalent in Mexico” (Griffin 363+ ). Javier Ortega, a 40-year-old auto body repairman from Guadalajara, says, "It doesn 't matter how many people, horses, bicycles, helicopters or planes they use…. People will go. It doesn 't matter if the fence is electric" (Griffin 363+). These people carry dreams with them in hopes for a better life. These people are willing to walk day and night through any desert and any river they come across to achieve the “American Dream.” Illegal immigration between Mexico and the United States is a serious situation that needs to be solved. To better understand this situation, one must analyze the causes and effects and come up with a solution.

We all come from different places and ethnicities, and because of having a dream, people fled away from their home to seek for something to make their life better. Going to a country like United States, is not only a dream but also, an opportunity because many people think that America is the best place to settle in, where work, and education are an easy access. Though this statement is partly true, it is not that easy. Everyone envied because America is a great nation because it's a country of opportunity, but a part of it also is a mixture of feelings that are hard to explain especially if you are immigrant. Every day in your life, you are fighting for something in order to fit in and survive. However, in the process of fitting in or blending to a certain place, people, and culture, it requires a lot of personal choices and a lot of effort as an immigrant. It does not only affect you as a human, but also it draws a lot of attention, conflicts and tension between the government and community. Most immigrants have a harder time to adjust or assimilate even though they speak fluent English and eat American foods. Whenever you see a person of white complexion, people assumed that blue eyes and blonde hair are the characteristics of an American, though these are how we perceived American long time ago, this are still the standards of a few now and doesn’t make a big change at all. As a daughter of parents who migrated to the Unites States from El Salvador, I personally believe that immigrants are the correct side from what the Americans see or believe; however, just like anything else there will be two different sides; the good immigrants and the bad immigrants. For example, first, the US has immigrants with different types of crimes committed. Then, we have the issue of jobs with immigrants. Third, an additional issue is the cost of having immigrants that has many questions regarding the benefit. Traditionally immigrants are faced numerous challenges on a daily basis. America is known as the place where there is a chances to succeed, a place where you can be free. Numerous Immigrants came to America with the goal that they could have a more noteworthy plausibility at prevailing in life. Settlers went out on a limb a when coming to America, for some it worked out well however for others they had a troublesome time here. Regardless of the battles that the outsiders experienced, for example, emerging from others, being isolated from their families, and breaking their way of life, the settlers are as yet thankful to be in America since they were in preferable conditions over they were in their country.

Humanity is ever so much more complicated than one could have ever imagined. Humans can thrive on change, but ultimately look for something to declare as home. In search of this home people travel long distances and risk everything they have. When an American contemplates the word immigrant, one imagines the countless people from Mexico crossing into our country or the refugees that hope to make this country their home. What eludes most of us, however, is the reality that most people were, at one point, immigrants to this country and that our forefathers came here exactly the same as refugees come today. What is brought to mind when I hear the word immigrant is hope and perseverance. I remember the countless people who have traveled here

The United States has been the land of opportunity for immigrants. It is a place where immigrants from all over the world come to build a better dream and future for their families and leave from poverty, they come with nothing but determination. One thing that every immigrant brings with them is their culture. A person's culture is strongly tied to the country where they grew up. It is tied to their relationship with their family. Many people come to America from so many different places all over the world. For this reason, people call America a melting pot of cultures immigrants are striving for a better future even though when they migrate to the USA they don’t know the consequences they will face and struggle to be successful living in the United States.

Day in and day out many immigrants enter the United States of America in search of greener pastures. This greener pasture includes higher educational prospects and lucrative jobs. However, life usually does not turn out as many of them usually anticipate. The expectation they usually have prior to their entry to the United States is partly due to the all rosary and nice things they hear about America. They hear such nice things from the media and also from diaspora’s who return from America to their homeland who usually don’t share their entire experiences with them. There have been quite a number of reports and research findings that outline the various challenges that are faced by immigrants in America. I personally share some of these issues as an international student in a foreign country. Prior to coming to Metropolitan State University, I had colleagues who told me about the school and their excellent environments that facilitate learning. Also other friends who were in America made me aware of the opportunity to work alongside schooling which made me more interested as I needed financial aid. With all these palatable information in mind, I did apply for the school and even though the tuition fee was quite expensive considering my socio economic background, I did apply having the mindset of working to meet up certain financial needs. Upon arrival in America, I realized that I was given a fraction of the entire picture. I wasn't allowed to work outside of campus,

Being a descendant of a veteran makes me proud of my family and its history and hardwork and dedication. Makes me proud of my country and where I come from. Helps me have a better appreciation for those who fight for our country. Makes me thankful that they give up so much like being with their family, sleep and being able to come home and take days off of work, so that I can sleep at night peacefully in my bed without having to worry about what is going on outside my house. It means putting trust in my country and everything that it stands for. It means saying that Pledge Allegiance with meaning and understanding on the words that I am saying. The undocumented immigrant population is growing every year in the United States. Whether they came to settle here for freedom or for more opportunities in life, it is a lot harder for immigrants who are undocumented versus the immigrants who are legally documented to find professional and/or stable jobs to maintain due to the absence of legal working permits or green card holders. We can help them lead to successful paths, as well as helping our economy grow, and keeping our community safe by having employment centers.

The news came out that all immigrants will be temporarily banned from the U.S. Then the question came to my head. What does it mean to be an American? This is when my definition completely. Before Donald Trump became president, I saw myself as a complete Americans For the reason that I lived in the U.S., I was free, I was equal to everyone else and finally, I inhabit a citizen. Once I heard about this ban, being American no longer meant that everyone was equal. People were being discriminated for their color, race, and religion. Everyone who lives in the U.S. is an immigrant or a descendant of an immigrant. We are all equal no matter where we came from until now. President Obama’s government is the only one that has deported more than 2.5 million people back to their native country. Some of the immigrates who were detained for deportation appeared to be undocumented or apprehended through traffic violations, misdemeanor and felony cases and expired work visas. Without the policy being modified to reflect a change in the deportation laws, more undocumented immigrates who are parents of children that are America citizens would be separated from their children and families indefinitely.

When climbing a ladder, you have some difficulties. Like immigration, you can’t start at the bottom and go straight to the top, you have to work for it. A large amount of the United States population is made up of immigrants. In 2016, more than 13 million legal immigrants came to this country. They came here in order to live a free life, practice their religion, escape poverty, make better lives for their families, and for the job opportunities. Veterans that are immigrants make up a portion of the 13 million immigrants. 3% of the veterans that have served or are serving our beautiful country are immigrants.

It is relatively easy to me to define Immigration. It consists of the abandonment of certain people of their place of residence, and the adoption of a new one for a relatively long period, although not necessarily permanent. I'm Dominican and I left my country with my family to move to the United States (U.S.A). I'm a immigrant, I know how it feels to abandon your old life, friends, family, memories, places which were important for us. Thanks to God and my family I had very good welcome. Not everybody that comes to the United States has a good beginning, many come illegally trying to get a better life, and those are who have the road harder. Over the years immigration has continued to be a discussion of intense national debate. The effect of immigration have been looked at as positive and negative. The economy and government has been affected in a multitude of ways. The immigrants are offered sources for work and also economic support for them and their families yet many American citizens are without jobs and struggle to keep a household. Also many Americans do feel as if they are being pushed to the side when it comes to availability in work sources and the taxes people pay are going to the non natives who don’t work but only live off of others benefits. Contrary to that, the number of immigrant men who have a job seems to be higher than native-born men.
