The challenge that occurs between minority communities and the police is nothing new to society. Our history has shown events and behaviors that led minority communities to believe that law enforcement will not treat them fairly. Although the road to building community-policing relations is about the communities trusting the police, it is also about law enforcement trusting the communities. Respect and confidence should be mutual, and the problem minorities face today cannot be solved without addressing both sides (Jackson, 2015). A second limitation of community policing is the involvement of the community. According to McKenna, and Culshaw (2009), law enforcement needs to establish trust and partnership with the community. Studies have shown that communities, where law enforcement is involved, proved to be effective in policing. Without the participation of the community, policing will fail. Although some communities may not have the same trust and relationship with law enforcement, however, community policing has come to a long way and communities where there is involvement of the community, trust, and respect has shown to fosters an improved relationship between communities and the

The community policing plan created by the City of Aberdeen in Maryland provides a good example of how the partnership between the police and members of the community can be effective for dealing with crimes. Both the police and the community have to learn how to change their thinking processes in order to deal with the problems in a proactive way, instead of the conventional reactive fashion. Through the training sessions, the members of the community, the police officers and city department heads will acquire the skills and knowledge for addressing problems. The involvement of the city department heads and other

Although policing has been around for many decades, law enforcement roles have not changed too significantly. Media, such as television shows and movies, portray law enforcement officers as fearless crime fighters who are in daily high speed chases and shoot outs. While these crimes may be possible, it is not likely on a daily basis. So, just what do police officers respond too then? They deal with many various types of service calls each month and year including little disruptions and civil arguments or disputes. Police officers today need to be in different places for all different types of complaints and issues. Because many agencies do not have the capability or manpower for the growing need, community policing is a fast growing necessity for these agencies. This paper will discuss where community policing originated from, how it effects law enforcement today, and some of the ways we can expand the concept of community policing to benefit everyone for the future.
According to Rukus, Warner, and Zhang, Community policing strategies were designed to give residents greater empowerment by allowing them to participate in deliberations on policing and work more closely with officers on the street (Community Oriented Policing Services, 2014). In order for officers’ ethics to be shown, they must communicate and bond with the citizens in the communities that they serve. Today, many people just believe that police officers are bad because officers have been portrayed as individuals who just arrest and shoot people. Police officers should communicate with people every day, not just when they are arresting someone or serving warrants. Overall, the article by Rukus was very informative. It highlighted the pros of law enforcement agencies, building community relationships and the citizen’s roles in establishing those relationships.

The reality of policing is that not enough devoted time and resources to building relationships with the people with whom law enforcement interact the most: disenfranchised, marginalized communities where jobs, hope, and stability are in short supply and violence, guns, drugs, and despair are all too common. And plainly stated, none of this will happen unless police leaders and supervisors constantly embody the traits they expect of their subordinates, and unless effective engagement is a required, critical, and measured area of job performance.

Problem solving by the use of various models such as the S.A.R.A model and other models provides a outline that can be applied when CPOs work their designated beats. As a new trust is developed between police officials and residents this framework can be applied to the increasing difficulties that may help create a stronger partnership. Though problem solving is contingent on the stability of a community the public police agencies must continually look for effective methods to implement and adapt to a ever changing society.
Community policing is the idea of a partnership between officers and communities to become familiar with the communities ' inhabitants. Community policing is also a project set to connect the police community to overall society and avoid the mistreat of citizens and or prevent corrupt officers. Brooks states that policing is "predicated essentially [on] operating in the community and not being of the community"(Kaplan, 2015, para. 6). The idea that police officers do not need to part-take in society is a statement that should not be acceptable in the roles of law enforcement. When police officers do not connect to the society members, there are greater risks of there being mistreat from police officers to members of the community whom may feel like rebelling. If there are more dedicated officers, there is a passion these officers develop that can ensure abilities to serve and protect the community; specifically, due to the idea that the officers allow themselves to become parts of those communities. By improving connections with communities and police, law enforcement jobs will be easier and more enjoyable, in regards to being passionate about the job. This paper will discuss the purpose of community policing and how incorrect community policing can result to police corruption.
