Ronald Reagan was born at Tampico Illinois in February 6, 1911. Later in his childhood he lived in a serious of towns around Illinois, but finally settled in Dixon, Illinois in 1920. Mr. Reagan graduated Dixon high school in 1920. During his high schools years he was an athlete, school play performer and was student body president. On his summers he would work as a lifeguard. Next, for his athletic ability, he was enrolled in Eureka College in Illinois and got a scholarship for it. Mr. Reagan also took economics and sociology. In 1937, Mr. Reagan went into acting; he signed a seven-year contract with Warner Bothers movie studios. In the next three years he was in more than 50 films. One of his notorious films was “Kings Row”, it’s about a man whom Mr. Reagan plays a man that gets into an accident and has his leg amputated. According to a book titled Up Close: Ronald Reagan, his father Jack was an alcoholic. At 11 years old, Reagan witnessed his father passed out on the porch one evening after returning from the YMCA. He had to drag his father into the house and put him in bed. Jack was constantly fighting alcoholism for most of his life causing him to struggle at work, fight with his family members, and disappear from home. Reagan’s mother, Nelle, continued telling him and his older brother, Neil, that their father was addicted to alcohol and he could not control it. Reagan won his election with fifty percent of the popular vote over former President Jimmy Carter who had forty one percent. While Reagan as a president is praised for such successes as strengthening the national defense, stimulating growth in the U.S. economically, and as mentioned before he is considered the President who ended the Cold War. President Reagan had achieved many things by the end of his administration, but just as he had many successes his presidency was plagued with shortcomings and a handful of what could be considered flat out failures. Reagan was elected to Governor of California and served from 1967-1975. He also enlisted with the Army Reserve from 1942 to 1945 and was called to active duty after Pearl Harbor. He rose to the rank of Captain but never took part in any combat. He remained stateside, narrating training films and was in the Army Air Force First Motion Picture Unit.
