Gun Control has been a controversial topic within the United States for several decades. Many of whom argue against it, stating that laws regarding gun control are unnecessary and not needed. However, gun control laws are unequivocally needed more than ever in today’s society. This paper will examine the topic of gun control and gun violence, thus providing evidence as to why the United States needs to implement stern rigorous laws in order to deter the amount of gun related criminal acts.
The “Gun Show Loophole” To enumerate, the “Gun Show loophole” is a political term in the United States which refers to the sale and distribution of firearms to private citizens without a background check. With this ever present loophole, it allows criminals
Many tragedies have occurred recently that have spurred the debate on whether or not we need tighter gun controls. On one side of the debate are the gun control supporters, who claim that the easy access to guns is the primary cause for high rates of crime plaguing the United States. On the other side are people who argue that gun laws will not prevent criminals from obtaining guns, since they will continue to get them illegally. Guns are used for protection when in the hands of people who obey the law. It is crucial to not hinder law-abiding citizen’s ability to possess firearms with stricter gun laws, since gun laws do not lower crime, and guns can keep people safe.
A shooting here; a shooting there; an every day occurrence heard in the newspapers and on the news channels on television. New media are reporting a shooting somewhere. Whether the shootings are accidental or intentional; they are happening across the United States. Nevertheless, in today’s society, gun violence is sparking debate and controversy on how to control gun violence. Throughout the country, thousands of laws and regulations have been created to aid in the control of guns. Through much study, the gun laws and regulations in place have very little effect on the number of gun related injuries and deaths. More needs to be done to establish an effective way to control gun violence.
The article “Gun Control Laws: Should the United States adopt stronger gun control laws?” focuses on the debate on passing stricter gun control laws. For example, supporters believe that gun control laws will decrease mass shootings and gun violence. Additionally, adopting these laws does not violate the Second Amendment, and as a result it does not limit the government from the use of fire arms when it is necessary. However, opponents argue that the gun control laws will not stop gun violence. The problem is the people holding the gun and not the gun itself. Furthermore, opponents gathered that stronger gun control laws do violate the Second Amendment. The author illustrates the debate on whether the United States should or should not adopt stronger gun control laws.
People who appreciate activities like shooting competitions and hunting, use firearms responsibly. This use contrasts with other uses, which often result in consequences that can be both intended and unintended. With past and present mass shootings, and acts of bloodshed perpetrated with the usage of weapons; has triggered a focus on gun control that once again has been brought into the spotlight. The purpose of the ongoing gun argument addresses the crimes that are committed with guns. This issue of gun control separated people into two groups: those who believe that carrying guns might prevent some crimes and fatalities, and those who don’t. There are individuals who believe absolutely the reverse: that more crime and deaths
Eighty-nine people depart from this earth due to gun violence in the US every day. From school children, to victims of domestic violence, to people going about their daily lives, this status quo is unacceptable. On Tuesday January 5th, 2016 President Obama announced that he would send proposals on reducing gun violence in America to Congress. His spokesman, Jay Carney, mentioned that this is “a complex problem that will require a complex solution.” The ability to own a gun is considered by some a birthright of Americans. However, with crime rates involving handguns rising each day it has become quite clear. Handgun laws must become stricter in order to reduce homicide and crime. The question is, “which solution in most effective in decreasing gun violence?” Gun control is a major conflict that is constantly reoccurring and the US is seemingly divided over it.
The debate over stricter gun laws has been ongoing in the United States for quite some time now. Individuals who oppose stricter gun control laws argue that the second amendment to the constitution of the United States constitute part of the bill of rights that protect the right of American citizens to bear arms, and any attempt to set up laws for gun control will be a direct violation of this (Hofstadter 10). They argue that the primary purpose of the amendment was to ensure that American Citizens had the capability to protect themselves against criminal activities and defend the country against external aggression. From a personal perspective, the recent surge in instances of gun violence in the United States of America indicates that stricter gun control laws are necessary for the safety of the American citizenry. Thus, this paper is going to focus on highlighting the benefits of more stringent gun control laws and why members of the public should support it.
For the purposes of this paper "Gun Control" is defined as policies enacted by the government that limit the legal rights of gun owners to own, carry, or use firearms, with the intent of reducing gun crimes such as murder, armed robbery, aggravated rape, and the like. So defined, gun control understandably brings favorable responses from some, and angry objections from others. The gun control
Gun violence is one of the most serious problems in the United States. Each year in the U.S., more than 35,000 people are killed by guns, a death rate much higher than that in any other industrial nations. In 1997, approximately 70 percent of the murders in the United States were committed with guns. However, ironically, the United States also is the country that has the most gun control laws. Gun control laws generally focus on passing legislation—by local state, or national government—to restrict legal ownership of certain firearms. Seemingly, gun control laws may decrease criminals’ access to guns, but in fact the same laws also have their negative effects. Thus, the controversy over gun control is always heated. But my paper is not
Gun control debates of the past have led to the passage of some legislation, the most prominent measure being the Brady Bill, which required that background checks be run on potential customers before they were sold a gun. However, this national legislation concerning gun control only applies to licensed gun dealers. This has left a huge “gun control loophole,” the sale of firearms by unlicensed dealers and private collectors at gun shows, at the national level, which has recently become the center of intense debate. Those who support gun control (generally liberals) argue that it is necessary to regulate this area, while the other side of the debate (generally conservatives) contends that the enforcement of gun control
Gun control has become an increasingly controversial topic in the nation due to the continuous debates relating to gun control and whether or not laws should be passed to make it harder for guns to be obtained. Guns serve for a variety of purposes that range from good to bad. Guns are not for everyone. Some individuals cannot handle guns properly, and some choose to use guns inappropriately. Lately, guns have become more of a problem in our society. There has been an increasing amount of shootings that have taken many lives and have wounded people emotionally, not just physically. Although guns are used for protection, firearms are reportedly used more in crimes. More and more shootings are breaking out across the nation. As a result, the
There shouldn’t be any loopholes in gun laws. For example, anyone could easily purchase a gun at a gun show with no background check or anything else according to the article on the web site Governing, “Known as the ‘gun show loophole,’ most states do not require background checks for firearms purchased at gun shows from private individuals -- federal law only requires licensed dealers to conduct checks.” Furthermore, another thing is people purchasing guns to sell them to others with no documentation or anything else. The idea that I propose to fix the current problem with guns is having a check up on the guns that people purchased every 6 months. In the recent shooting that happened in Florida, the shooter easily purchased a gun in spite of the fact that he wrote a youtube comment that hints his plans for the shooting according to the article How gun background checks work published by CNN, “ He even made explicit threats that foreshadowed Wednesday's massacre. Last fall, a YouTube user going by the name ‘nikolas cruz’ left the following
How is it right that anybody can obtain a firearm? Why is it even possible that there could be such a thing know as that “gun show loophole” with so many death happening in America? If somebody with mental issue would want to get a gun they would easy be able to get one. That person would just need to go to a gun show and find a firearm they like, and purchase the gun from a private individual at the gun show. Most states that have gun shows don’t require the buyer to do a background on them, only twelve states require background check on all purchase at a gun show, and only seven states only require background check on handguns sales (Gun show). The seller would only have to make sure the buyer has a gun licence to purchase a gun (Gun show).
“What specifically mostly is the gun show loophole?” basically definitely many people for all intents and purposes have either heard this question kind of particular literally asked before or for the most part mostly have heard of the gun show loophole in a generally particularly major way in a subtle way. However, generally generally many people kind of literally do not particularly for the most part know what it really kind of essentially is or how it even works, sort of very contrary to popular belief in a definitely major way. To particularly for the most part define the gun show loophole one must basically essentially understand how gun definitely kind of shows and sort of for all intents and purposes other firearm sale works, which for
Every year in America alone, “33,880 people die from gun violence”. According to the Second Amendment, American citizens have the right to keep and bear arms. This, however, has been a matter of great debate for decades. Gun rights and gun control are perhaps two of the most discussed issues in US history, and the public’s opinions are very divided. To me, it all comes down to one simple question. Does America’s current system work? While this question is rather complicated to answer, by looking at the statistics for gun violence, I think it’s fair to say that the current system is not working. Don’t you think that it is time for America to start taking gun control seriously, and finally use it as a mean to stop gun violence? I strongly believe that America needs gun control, and so in this essay I explore the reasons why. Firstly, I would just like to clarify that I am not calling for guns to be banned, at least not yet. However, I am calling for stricter and safer guidelines to be put in place for owning these kinds of weapons.
Since the Brady Act was introduced in 1998, we know that there have been approximately two hundred and thirty million background screenings done to date. However, imagine how many more could have been completed if the right laws were in place for unlicensed dealers. The laws that are in place today are lacking at best, therefore a major issue with purchasing these firearms happen at gun shows, which is also known as “the gun show loophole.” In an article, written by Mark Duggan of the MIT Press, states that “THOUSANDS of gun shows take place in the United States each year. Gun control advocates argue that the "gun show loophole" makes it easier for potential criminals to obtain a gun; the loophole basically allows unlicensed vendors at gun shows to sell firearms without conducting background checks on purchasers.” (Duggan) A twenty-one-year old cannot even walk into a bar or a liquor store and purchase alcohol without the proper identification, nevertheless someone with a known criminal background or a person with a history of mental illness can walk straight into a gun show and purchase deadly weapons without even flashing an identification card, but per our government laws, that’s completely legal.
