Hedges’ argument that “the most essential skill… is artifice” can be true to an extent; however, there are other skills that are also essential in both political theater and consumer culture. These days, the first person many people think about after hearing the word “politics” is the current president of the United States of America, Donald Trump. People immediately think of him due to the fact that the 2016 presidential election was one of the most controversial elections in the past few decades. Many people either love and support Donald Trump or they hate and despise him. People could have such negative feelings toward him due to the fact that he has been caught “stretching the truth” and contradicting his own statements from the past
After listening to the panel of professors speak at the SCAD Keynote Event, "Explaining the Trump Phenomenon: Interdisciplinary Perspectives", I learned a variety of perspectives on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. These perspectives were on different topics, including how he gained his supporters, his economic policies and other policies, what could happen if he becomes president, and much more. First, Trump’s popularity was definitely a surprise to a lot of people. Many of the panelists believe that he gained his supporters by shining light on some of our nation and government’s hidden problems. So he ultimately used fear to gain voters. One professor showed a poll showing that an overwhelming majority of people voting for Trump
With last year being the first election that I could vote in, I took particular interest in keeping up with politics as much as I could. It was truly sad to see Obama leave office, being that he was a symbol of hope for so many, regardless of the critiques on how well he did his job. When our current president, something that is still hard for me to face the reality of, Donald Trump, announced his campaign I thought he had no chance. I did not see it possible for a man with no political background, who is only known for being a wealthy businessman along with reality star to become the leader of
Mast focused his book on a similar scandal that occurred in Washington called the Watergate scandal with Richard Nixon that displayed similar endeavors that occur in American politics. “The Performative Presidency” is a clearly written and compact book on an important topic too often ignored by social scientists; the performative dimension of politics. Most scholars accept at an abstract level that politics is not fully captured by survey data and analysis of formal political processes. Politics is practiced, it is a lived, social endeavor, and a meaningful or sometimes meaningless experience. It creates fallacies that are fragile to human endeavors, but how one integrates these factors into the study of politics is much less clear. Especially
In the shortest section of Matthew’s Hardball, “Deals” examines the fundamentals of maintaining face towards the public and furthering politicians’ careers. Matthews, through his variety of examples, explains to his audiences why politicians must be well informed with all news, but also politicians—to remain relevant in Washington—must only speak to the public and colleagues when they are able to improve their position. With this notion of standing by a person’s principles, the Republicans—especially Sen. Lindsay Graham—swift rejection of the Iran Nuclear Deal is not surprising.
6 2 8 3 10 11 13 5 Politics are, “the process by which we select our governmental leaders and what policies these leaders pursue.” In the article about Judge Jeanine, the judge thinks Obama has violated the American public’s trust and should be impeached. When a party, in this case Democrats, does things that the majority of Americans’ disagree with, like releasing terrorists, it lowers the number of people who will vote for them. Opponents of the Obama administration try to make issues seem worse than they are to further themselves. John McCain heavily criticizes Obama in another article. Obama is also hurting his own approval rates by being absent and not doing as much about current issues as is expected of him. Similarly, non politicians that strongly support one party will go after the politicians in the other party to try and draw more voters to their side as in the article where Krauthammer gives his views on Obama’s Refugee Status Proposal. They try to use keywords that will get Americans’ attention like when he talks about Obama distorting the law. The article, “President is Just
In today’s world, the most controversial politician in this era is the president of the U.S. How did Trump possibly get to the point where he was able to lead the republican party, even with overflowing controversy? Can anybody with immense wealth/fortune and/or credible political connections become the frontrunner of the presidential election? Regardless of one’s answer, after this presidential election the outlook on the set up and landscape of politics will change drastically. The accusations of assault, moral dishonesty, and racism towards Trump has brought more turmoil in the political world, feuds among the people, and rambunctious protests within communities than any other presidential election this century. Even though degrading controversy is associated with Trump, he was still able to use highly effective sarcastic and hyperbolic rhetoric, which translated to entertainment, to capture votes and overcome accusations of assault.
Remember 2012 when Mitt Romney ran for president? We all thought that it was the end of the world and that Romney would be the final downfall of America. Now it’s 2016 and there’s a new “Mitt Romney,” but this time it’s totally different. Donald Trump is someone who people either glorify or are terrified at the thought of this man “making America great again.” Most people think that Donald Trump is “brutally honest” or is extremely humourous. The people who think that Trump is funny are not looking at what he could do. The people who agree with Trump’s views are not looking at how it could affect so many people looking up to America which is perceived as a chance for change and hope. Maybe I’m being bias because I am the child of an Mexican
On Tuesday November 9th 2016, Donald Trump was elected president of the United States of America. Mr. Trump was an unlikely and underestimated candidate, not only by the Republican party he associates with but his Democratic rival and what half of the population. He is politically inexperienced and ran his campaign capitalizing on the nation’s economic concerns and fears. His racial remarks and sexual assault allegations seemed to be overlooked by voters and seemed to benefit him due to the racial tensions arising in our nation. He was elected into the highest position possible, President of the free world. His rise in popularity was largely missed by polling organizations and data experts. In this paper I am going to examine the main reasons
Limited Playing Field: The 2016 presidential election has differed from previous ones mainly in the fact that both candidates are disliked by both Republicans and Democrats. One panelist pointed to a survey that shows Hillary Clinton and Trump are the most disliked candidates to run for office since 1980. The public’s apathy toward Clinton, and the former first lady’s media coverage over her 30 years in the public eye, a panelist argued, has created a negative storyline of the candidate. Critics lambast her for not conveying warmth and criticize her close connections to the wealthy and the
When the republican presidential candidate first threw in his bid for the white house, many dread at his rhetoric. That same rhetoric has lifted him to the American presidency. The Donald Trump phenomenon is one that society may look back upon and possibly dread at the damage done to the perception of America and uncertainty of the country’s future.
“If Donald Trump's plans were ever implemented, the country would sink into a prolonged recession," said former GOP nominee Mitt Romney (Cary). By saying this Romney is trying to convey his strong belief on Trump’s ineligibility to be the president of the United States. The debate on this political issue has been going on since the presidential campaign started last year. While it is true that he won the presidential election, many Americans are still questioning if he’s the right person for their country or not. They have been considering both his personal and professional life. From his relationships to his success. Some say that his ties with other countries can be very beneficial, while others disagree due to his lack of political experience.
Donald Trump, prior to his announcement, has had his time in the political spotlight on numerous occasions, but nobody had ever taken him seriously. On June 16, 2015, that all changed. Mr. Trump isn’t the ‘normal’ candidate, in fact he’s everything opposite. He’s not afraid to say what he wants, no matter how offensive his comments may be. He’s not afraid to boast to 24 million viewers on national television that he’s personally ‘bought’ politicians off, including the very ones he’s running against. Trump has become a force to be reckoned with. Some of his opponents brush him off, and characterize him and his campaign as political reality television and nothing more, but numbers don’t lie: with every
A commonality among the American public is the negativity and pessimism that floats in the atmosphere of the United States government, although, what many fail to do is act on the change they wish to see. In this, millions of Americans confide on representatives and government officials–the most popular being the President–to in hopes restore the complications they perceive as important. In this 2016 presidential election, individuals in rural and Rust Belt America found Donald Trump, acclaimed entrepreneur and hater of political corruption, found him best fit as an outside source to mend the issues the US faces today. Bringing in the outside, yet strange power of Donald Trump brought new ways in how people viewed social media, press, and
Donald Trump was elected president of the United States of America on November 8th, 2016, and now has been running our country for over a year. As Trump’s first year in office slowly began, his reputation seems to be creating different outside views of our nation and arguments started producing everywhere. After competing with Hillary Clinton for the presidential term in office, Trump defeated her along with her democratic supporters causing one of the most shocking elections in U.S. history. Using public media web pages, we are reviewing both sides of the argument regarding Trump’s election and we are going to decipher why each arguer supports their side, and why each side is reasonable for the benefit of our country.
America is in a disaster and one of the reasons why it is is because of Trump. Trump is America’s 45th president, but most of the media resent him. In my opinion, I think the media is sometimes unfair to Trump since it can occasionally go overboard and exaggerate the atrocious behavior in Trump, but it’s also Trump’s fault for his erroneous and impulsive resolutions, which makes the media dislike him.
