1. Which are more closely related to crocodiles: birds or lizards? Explain.
Birds are closely related to crocodiles because they share the same ancestry with the dinosaurs. To compare the crocodile and lizard, one would think the lizard is closely related to crocodiles, as we read in our text, "similar structures don't always reveal common ancestry." Crocodiles and birds evolved having the same common ancestry as the dinosaur. Lizards, on the other hand, do not share a close common ancestor with crocodiles or dinosaurs, their common ancestry is more distant.
2. Feathers evolved for purposes other than flight. What are some possible functions for these early feathers?
Aside from feathers being a purpose for flying, they also offer protection,
“We often think of the T-Rex as this huge crocodile-like bipedal reptile but in fact, its closest modern relative are birds and the T-Rex was actually the dinosaur equivalent of a chicken” explains Linda Rushmore, head researcher at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences’ Paleontology
His mom thinks he got the first feather from a chicken hawk. Lane used turkey feathers as well. He always changed the feathers over the years when he would find one that was cool and unusual.
Many people get the Alligator and the Crocodile confused.Yes there are some similarities but there is ways to tell the difference. Even though many people can not tell the difference between the two there are many differences like the alligator has a little bit brighter color on their skin.
There are numerous counts of evidence showing the processes of evolution and how species ultimately evolved over millions of years. One of the most compelling hypotheses behind evolution was presented by Charles Darwin with his study of the Galapagos Islands. His study showing the various different birds and their different evolutions they went through to be able to survive the changes of weather and relocation. The birds he studied had to change in order to survive, or as he simply puts it: “Survival of the Fittest”. Evolution is the changing of past organisms to diversify and have the ability to fit better in their environment and survive. Diving into the dinosaur cladogram, studies have shown that ancient dinosaurs, over hundreds of millions of years ago, evolved into our modern day birds, and not lizards as many suppose. It became apparent that there would not be enough food for a 9 ton dinosaur to consume on a daily basis forever. So evolution occurred and dinosaurs evolved to become more efficient so they could survive more effectively in their
There are four main groups of reptiles, known as Crocodilians, Squamates, Tuataras, and Turtles. Crocodilians consists of large reptiles which includes alligators, crocodiles, gharials, and caimans. Squamates are lizards, snakes, and worm-lizards. A worm-lizard is a subterranean burrowing reptile that resembles an earthworm, a legless lizard. Tuataras are a group of reptiles that are lizard-like in appearance but are different from squamates because their skull isn’t jointed. Turtles are the most ancient reptiles alive today. They have changed very little since they first showed up 220 million years ago. The first turtle appeared 220 million years ago.(Laura Klappenbach)
The Glen Rose Trackway is a 107-million-year–old series of fossilized dinosaur footprints. Excavated from the bed of the Paluxy River in Texas, the trackway gives a picture of dinosaurs that in some ways is more striking than that offered by fossils. Collected in 1938, the smaller prints are from a theropod, a dinosaur that walked on two hind feet. The larger ones were probably left by a plant-eating sauropod, such as Apatosaurus, the hind feet of which measured 3 feet in length. Birds are dinosaurs. Just as humans are both primates and mammals because we descended from the first primate and the first mammal, birds are dinosaurs because they descended from the first theropod and the first dinosaur. Their upright stance came from the very first dinosaur.
Authors can display their views of humanity through use of literary devices. In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, the use of diction, point of view, and figurative language help to develop a theme of how humanity is innately evil. Golding’s diction is a good indicator of how he views humanity. The boys always speak in colloquial language with a lot of slang words mixed in.
Humans and fish are not closely related on the outside appearance. Most people would not see how we can share the same features with fish, but scientists do know that these two species share homologous features. Homologous is being in similar structures, and having similar genes indicate species are from a common ancestor, but does not have indicated that these features will work exactly the same. Humans and fish are related in the lineage of chordate because human shared homologous features to fish. Homologous features shared by human and fish enlighten the evolutionary pathway from the earliest vertebrate by sharing similar structures of the hands and fins, the development of teeth that diversified into features that showed up from the
The Florida state reptile is the crocodile it was named the state symbol in 1987by the state legislature the crocodile was one of the endangered animals in Florida then Florida made it law no killing alligators the crocodile is definitely worth being a symbol of Florida for all the reasons described above
Traits are basic characteristics they make one the thing common in ways. The usual length of a alligator is about 18 feet and females are similar to that.Crocodiles are 20 feet in length ,but the females vary. The crocodile has more of a V shaped head unlike the alligator with more of a U shaped head.one thing these two reptiles have in common is their both cold
Archaeologist and researchers have discovered a dinosaur fossil tail that has feathers on it preserved in amber. In her article Dinosaur tail preserved in amber — feathers and all, Meghan Rosen (2017) states, “The golden chunk of amber is 99 million years old. Inside sits something extraordinary. It’s a tiny dinosaur tail — with pristinely preserved feathers.” Since they found one dinosaur fossil with feathers on it there is bound to be more. Because we don’t know what dinosaurs actually looked like, this could tell us that they had feather on them. There has been feathers from this time period before but just didn’t contain dinosaurs fossils, but this one did contain feathers from a dinosaur (Meghan Rosen, 2017). The
2.5) It is supposedly linked to today’s lizards and chameleons. Due to the shape of its bodies and that they might be a miniature size of the dinosaur and that they are also reptiles.
Alligators are in the same family as other large reptiles like crocodiles but they are only native to two countries, Which are the southern USA and china. Alligators tend to be smaller than their crocodile cousins but have been know to move at speeds of 15 mph before. This make them one of the fastest reptiles on earth.
The biological species concept is defined, as species that are groups of interbreeding natural populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups. Species of the similar classification can mate and reproduce with each other but not with distinctive species. Although there is species that look relatively the same that does not define how species interbreed with each other. For example, an alligator and a crocodile look the same but are not classified as the same species therefore they wouldn’t be able to interbreed. Even though both of these reptiles are from the same group crocodilian and coexist they still don’t interbreed. The reason why is because these two reptiles have a different genetic make-up that wont let them reproduce.
