Ronald Reagan took office of Presidency in 1980. He was an avid Cold Warrior-boosting military spending and adopting a tough stance toward Russia. His ideas on foreign policies were of a free market ideology and anticommunist policy at home and abroad. Reagan strongly believed in freedom for all people. America would be an ally to our neighbors abroad, support them, and commit to all those who strived for freedom. We would not impose on their sovernity, nor give up ours. The United States would support and fund, countries and groups that were anticommunist, and those who rebelled against communism. By rebuilding our military, superpowers started downsizing their stockpiles of nuclear weapons.
In 1981 the CIA trained and armed the counter revolutionaries, which was known as Contra’s to help Nicaragua fight against the communist regime being funded by the Soviets. When Congress failed to continue funding the program, the Reagan administration imposed an embargo against the country.
The White House continued to secretly funnel money, contributing to right-wing groups, foreign governments, and the contras to help fight communism. The Administration provided equipment and weapons to aid, countries in their request to stomp out communism. Regan’s anticommunist views were appealing to countries aboard.
The United States and Soviet relations worsened. A campaign for a multinational freeze on the manufacturing and deployment of nuclear weapons was sparked. A nuclear war was feared. In March of 1983, Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) to counter the freeze campaign. Critics believed this program could cause more of a problem than good.
