How Much Gun Control Do We Need? The gun control debate has grown more heated than ever after the February 14th school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The question on everyone’s minds is, does America still need the second amendment? The answer may be yes, but it needs to be more restrictive than it is now. For example, one can buy an assault rifle when they are 18 but cannot drink or buy a handgun until they are 21 years old. Why can someone be able to buy an AR-15 when they are considered not mentally ready to consume alcohol? Why are ordinary citizens allowed to buy an assault rifle at all? Gun control should be more restrictive because studies have proven that America is far more prone to gun violence, which is most likely caused by Americans having an excess of firearms. However, the background check is not necessary. …show more content…
He also sought mental help until over fourteen months ago, as well as showing other “red flag” traits such as killing animals. Obviously, the background checks aren’t working. However, this doesn’t need the government needs to make the background checks stronger. Those with mental illnesses are actually less predisposed to violence than neurotypical people. Only 20% of 235 massacres were found to have been carried out by mentally ill people (Stone, 77) and 4% of all violence recorded in a year was carried out by people with more serious mental disorders (Swanson et al. 368); so, not only does this process not work, it’s useless as well. It stigmatizes mentally ill people and associates them with a predisposition to
Imagine at this moment seeing a loved one walking out those doors, perhaps the last time, and later in the day finding out he/she has been in a brutal shooting accompanied with other civilians. People having to think if there’s a way to stop the violence that is happening in the society and there is a way, but it is not enforced. Gun control is needed in this society, because civilians are living in fear wondering if it will be the last time being in this world and having the presence of gun control can reduce crime such as gun trafficking, mass shootings, and homicides.
Gun regulation has been a controversial topic since they were first established as a weapon. People for and against gun regulation provide strong arguments for their side. Gun regulation has fluctuated over time due to changes in office. Being a democracy prevents us from having consistency. As a nation we continue to change regulations on guns because of the different views our democracy allows us to have. The main aspects pose the most problems in gun control are violence, illegal sale of guns, and mental health checks.
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed " (US Const). Although written over two hundred years ago, the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution is still indispensable today. With thousands of innocent Americans murdered from the use of a firearm every year, there is a strong calling for stricter gun-control laws and regulations. Yet, every day United States citizens are forced to use their firearms for protective purposes, frequently saving their lives. While firearms pose a threat when in the wrong hands, restricting their use to only law enforcement is not the answer to ending gun violence. Though the rights granted under the Second Amendment are imperative and must not be stripped away, there are measures that should be taken in order to prevent gun violence, including the expansion of more stringent and thorough background checks and the increase in mental health screening.
Control is bad. The more control there is the less freedom we have. There are a lot of people that may say that gun control works, the simple fact is that those people do not know the difference between an assault weapon and an assault rifle. A assault weapon is a term used to describe a weapon that shoots one bullet per pull of the trigger, a assault rifle is a rapid fire, automatic weapon designed for the military use and sometimes confused for an assault weapon. Why would we listen to someone who does not have any knowledge about anything on the topic that they are trying to argue.
We the people are forming this Declaration of Gun Rights and Control in order to shed light and encourage gun control and stop senseless violence. The purpose of the Declaration of Gun Rights and Control is to regulate and/or ban the manufacture, sale, possession and use of firearms by civilians. The reasons for creating this declaration includes the need to stop mass shootings to protect citizens, clarifying the second amendment of the Constitution so that it is not used as an excuse to “bear arms,” and saving lives because of regulation. The Declaration of Gun Rights and Control is needed to restrict gun ownership and protect our people. According to CNN, gun violence kills 90 Americans every day. This is the time for the families
The United States Gun laws need to be actively strengthened to protect and prevent harm against citizens by creating more thorough background checks, mental health checks, and more licenses specifically for different types of assault weapons. Several mass shootings have been caused by legally purchased guns caused by background checks without intensive research. With stricter gun laws harm and massive tragedies would be prevented or have more protection and safety. New laws and mandates would change the environment of gun safety and protection.
Various studies have come forth arguing the ratio of gun related deaths to amount of conceal and carry permits show that while gun ownership increased in certain states, gun related deaths and violence for that matter decreased slightly . While only slight, a decrease in proportion to the amount of the amount of firearms sold, to deaths is significant in the argument that more guns does not necessarily mean more violence. In come instance, individuals seem safer when others around them are carrying firearms, as this acts as a sort of deterrent system. If someone has the idea or thought to commit an act with a firearm or any act or illegal activity for that matter, there is possibility for an average citizen who had a firearm on their
I believe that we have a right to have guns. It is an amendment and also a right to have then. They were trying to take that from us and we did not stand for it. I think that we all should keep our guns and weapons because it solves nothing.
We all want to live safe and secure, and to be able to live without fear. This is one of the human rights that should be protected by diplomats, congressmen, senators, presidents, and ect. However, there is many people that will give that up just to fulfill their desires for shooting. On the other hand, you have the NRA making it very easy for anyone to get there hands on a gun just to fill their banks. There is many horrible side effects to this being manifested to society. We live in a time where so many people have easy access to guns. There has never been more school shootings, mass murders, terrorist attacks, and ect. In this essay I am going to talk about the school shootings, NRA, and the NRA Ads. Those are the three most
In Connecticut on December 14, 2012 twenty year old Adam Lanza opened fire at Sandy Hook elementary school and fatally shot 20 children who were between the ages of six and seven. After fatally shooting the children he turned the gun upon himself and released the trigger. The attorney’s office concluded that Lanza acted alone and there was no provided indication as to why he did it or why he choose that school. Some Americans believe that the Preamble to the Constitution is most compelling for Americans today because it allowed Americans to insure domestic tranquility is taking place, such as gun control. Gun control is the set of laws that regulate the sale and use of firearms by civilians.
Restrictions are rules or limitations that are put in place to keep order. Restrictions have kept our country safe for years. For example, the drinking age for all U.S. residents is twenty-one years old. Imagine the risk of having a younger age or not having one at all. Also, alcohol is only sold Monday through Saturday and during certain times of the day. If restrictions were not in place there would be more accidents and deaths occurring every day. Strict gun control laws are needed to reduce the number of mass shootings.
Gun control, a very controversial topic that is very important in the United States. Well, why is controversial? To put it simply, it is because we can't seem to agree on how to control guns. The ownership of guns in the United States stems back since its inception, where the founding fathers granted citizens the right to bear arms. Since then, the government has implemented laws and protocol to keep guns out of reach from dangerous people who may use them in ways that put innocent lives in danger. Still, though, in many cases, these efforts are not enough. We still have high amounts of gun-related deaths when compared to other developed countries, and guns are also the leading cause of homicides. So, the gun control itself is absolutely
Gun control is something that Americans have to deal with everyday. 40% of all Americans said that there was a gun inside of their home. 57% say that there should be a major gun law. 91% say there should at least be a minor gun law. The United States does not need more gun control.
The shot heard around the world it seems like all you hear on the news is tragic occurrences involving guns. Firearms are supposed to protect us. However tragedies at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the Virginia Tech shooting, the Aurora “Batman” shooting, along with the Tucson shooting flowed our news feeds making us question our current gun control laws. With the upcoming holiday season approaching it hard for us to comprehend how we would live a minute without our loved ones. But for the families of the Sandy Hook disaster, Virginia Tech misfortune and Aurora Shooting that is a bitter reality. The gunmen from each of this incidents have took away something that no amount of money can replace.
When the second amendment was written there was a real threat of foreign governments coming to attack and take over. There was not a sizeable military to defend our nation as there now is. It was every man for himself at that time because our government was so new as was our country. Times have changed since the second amendment was written in 1791 stating “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Should the government increase gun controlDalai Lama XIV stated, “If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun.” The United States has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world and the highest rate of gun homicides (FactCheck.org, 2012). Do the two of these instances coincide with one another? Some argue that more guns means more crime while others feel the opposite. Violent crime would be reduced and possibly prevented if more states allowed citizens to open carry/ conceal carry legally.
