To help us maintain the efficiency of our government, George Washington gave our country words of advice in his Farewell address. His Farewell address was in 1796, on the eve of September 19. He mentioned that he would not be running in the next election and that his time as president was up. Washington, with the country’s welfare in mind, wanted the nation to obtain and maintain felicity. He had decided that he would give the future president and the people of the nation advice based on his experiences as president. His words of wisdom consists of telling us to stay united, follow the constitution, and to stay neutral.
First, let me begin by giving you some similarities between Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Washington and Lincoln became president during a time that was shaken by war, and a time where the people were looking for guidance. President Washington helped pave the way for the Constitution and helped write it while dealing with breaking from Britain while Lincoln fought to uphold the Constitution. Both Washington and Lincoln served a two term presidency. In some ways that Washington and Lincoln were similar was that they were both concerned for the future of the nation, they both wanted the United States to remain united and strong for future government rule. Washington and Lincoln impacted American history by their passion and determination
Washington strengthened the government financially because during his presidency the financial system was built. George Washington himself did not create the financial system but Alexander
Washington was not interested, nor wanted, permanent alliances as it could backfire on the U.S. Washington did not want different political parties as it would tear this country apart and he felt his job was to unify the U.S, not to tear it apart. Washington’s job was to make a stronger bond and he wouldn’t accomplish this by favoring one political party out of many, and that’s why he felt there should be no separation of political powers. Washington made sure to remind them to keep their liberty and freedom, because without it there whole work was for nothing.
Conflicting views and contrasting ideologies have always existed throughout the history of United States politics. Alexander Hamilton, who led Federalist Party, believed that a powerful central government was necessary while Thomas Jefferson, who led the Jeffersonian Republican Party, favored an agrarian nation with most of the power left to the states. Although Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were similar in that they both harbored good intentions and tried to keep the best interests in mind for the future of the United States, their policies were drastically different. Without doubt, both of their contrasting ideas served a vital role in forming the government.
In his Farewell Address, President Washington first expressed his zeal for America and his reasons for declining a third term as President. Immediately following these introductory comments, however, Washington, driven by concern for the welfare of the
Federalists wanted a strong Federal government, however the Democratic Republicans opposed it. The original members of the Democratic Republicans said that, “People would only be safe if ordinary people were in government.” They believed that the people would know what's right and they would make a lot of good decisions. The Federalists however wanted the government to be powerful. Hamilton wrote, “The people are turbulent and changing; they seldom judge or determine right.” He is right because our founding fathers agreed that if the people were angels there would be no need for a government , guess what we are not angels so we will make mistakes. To help make the people make better decisions Hamilton believed they needed a government above them. The Democratic Republicans also wanted the states to have more power and not the Government, as you can imagine there were more disagreements.
After his presidency, George Washington has explains many possible dangers and concerns he has for the for the up and coming nation that he spent 8 years so heavily devoted toward. There were many issues during Washington’s presidency so he writes a farewell address discussing the issues and giving Americans some wise words of advice. Some of the issues that Washington brings up include staying out of other nation’s issues and worry about ourselves, to not divide our nation by forming different political parties with different ideas, and pay off the newly acquired national debt. He explains all of these issues and more in his farewell address. He also says that if the constitution needs to be changed it should be done so legally and not by rebellion which Americans tend to do.
One of the views they had in common was equality amongst citizens of the US and other nations, including our own. In Washington’s Inaugural Address it states, “No such prejudices should interfere with the equal eye that should watch over this great assemblage of communities and interests.” In Barack Obama’s Inaugural Address, it states, “And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born, know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman and child who seeks a future of peace and respect.” This shows that the big picture of these quotes is equality for all. Washington wanted equality among citizens, while Obama wanted equality among citizens as well as other nations.
After so many years of imposing taxes, differing views, and bloodshed the United States Constitution was finally able to make its way in 1788. The U.S Constitution called for a revision of the Articles of Confederation, establishing a new form government. In the end, it completely threw out the out the Articles of Confederation. The ratification of the U.S Constitution caused much criticism and separated Americans into two groups Federalists and Ant-Federalists. Although there was much objection, with George Washington as the leading figure behind this new central government, more people were less hesitant towards it.
Thomas Jefferson and Geroge Washington played a large role in the stability of the government. George Washington was well respected among the public, which is why he was elected as the first president of America after the U.S. had officially become independent from Britain. Moreover, Thomas Jefferson was also a well-respected leader and believed in economic equality for everyone. Overall they both helped shape America for the better in the ways they led the country throughout their presidency. Washington was a man of character and rarely used force to settle issues.
Throughout George Washington's term as president he was faced with many difficult decisions such as choosing a strong federal government or a weaker version which led most of the responsibilities to the people. He was often faced with these two proposals since The first secretary of state Alexander Hamilton believed in a strong national government, while the secretary of state Thomas Jefferson believed in a lesser centralized government. These opposite point of views will shape America and form the economy we have today. Alexander Hamilton took most of his influence from Britain and only wanted to better shape America just how Britain was prospering due to the country manufacturing and selling goods.
The Federalist who was mainly lead by Alexander Hamilton, who had the position of a treasure when George Washington was president, wanted a strong central government that rivaled Great Britain. While, Thomas Jefferson, who was in charge of foreign relations (starting 1789), wanted a small, farmer to producer nation. Hamilton while being
The major point that Washington heavily address is the eradication of political parties within the US. According to Washington political parties "agitate[s] the community with ill-founded and false alarms;" meaning that political parties cause a disruption within the community's cohesion. Political parties can cause a huge schism between groups of people. Since parties have a certain platform that expresses a groups moral, economical, and social views, it can be easy and often common place for those of opposing parties to be have tension. Washington knew that this would be the case when if political parties continued. Each party would have their own agenda meaning that they would focus on the parties interest and not truly advocate for the countries
Another portion of Washington’s speech can be found by him giving credit to the nation as whole for accomplishing certain overhauls, with surrounding all the criticism when it came to certain decisions under his presidency, meanwhile the support from the public remained therein. Especially the work that as a people accomplish with pushing forward for the passing of the US Constitution. In president Obama’s farewell address telling constituents how he was extremely grateful for the American people not only making him into a better president but a better man, and on top of it gives praise to citizens for working hand in hand with the accomplishment of gaining momentum on the cost of health care rising at a slow rate due to the passing of the affordable healthcare act (New York Times, 2017).
