Why Did Lincoln Enter The White House

1861 to 1865 he led the United States during the Civil War. He ended slavery and helped keep the union from falling apart during the war. In 1860 he received 40% of the presidential vote, but by 1865 he became popular (Holzer, Harold.). Even though his feeling towards slavery did not change Lincoln's decision to fight. He believed it was his job as president to maintain the Union.(Abraham Lincoln). Abraham Lincoln’s strategy was to advance at the Confederates at the same time. His goal for the Union armies was to destroy opposing forces. Changing generals many times he found a general that would fight aggressively, Ulysses S. Grant. (Holzer, Harold.) McDowell, Fremont, McClellan, Pope, Buell, Burnside, and Rosecrans looked harmful to Abraham Lincoln when they failed to bring success to the Union (Abraham Lincoln). He often visited his fighting grounds to see if his strategy was being used. He was dissatisfied until he found Ulysses S. Grant. During the war, Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, for the freedom of all slaves. In 1863 the Gettysburg Address was delivered to the United States, letting the federal army fight to keep the Union (ebscohost). Lincoln's words did not bind the crumbling Union, and by April 1861, the Civil War had begun. In order to keep the South down, Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus, an act that helped Northerners arrest the Southern sympathizers among them. By 1864, the Union was tired of fighting, and the South was clinging to their last vestige of hope. George McClellan, challenged Lincoln for the presidency but failed in the general election. In March, Lincoln delivered a stirring Second Inaugural Address declaring, 'Let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds. . .' In one month's time, on April 9, 1864, the military leader of the South, General Robert E. Lee, surrendered to the Union's General Ulysses S. Grant, and the war was over.

As one of the most pivotal moments in American history, Abraham Lincoln initiating the civil war has far reaching consequences. However, as important as these consequences are the reasons for fighting the war; and the persistence/heart to endure the war. I believe that Lincoln started the war with the intentions of preserving the union, but as the war went on a new reason came to be -- ending slavery.

In 1800s, there was a war that happened that caused many people to die in the war, which was Civil War. The Civil War was a war that was fought between the Union and Confederate parts of United States. The Union was in the North, and the Confederates were in the South. There were many reasons why the battles were fought. During the Civil War, the president was Abraham Lincoln. There were many reasons why the war was fought, but the main reason was to keep the country together. Before the war, the North and South had some conflicts. During the Civil War, the slavery was one issue why the war was fought too. There were many battles that were fought between the North and the South. Most of the battles were fought in the South. Among the battles of the Civil War, there was an important battle called the Battle of Antietam. This battle was also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg. The battle of Antietam took place on September 17, 1862. This battle was fought at Antietam Creek that was close to the village of Sharpsburg, Maryland. The South was led by a general named Robert E. Lee. He was one of the greatest general on the Confederate side.

President Lincoln was thinking of taking a risky step to seal victory. At this point in time he came to the realization that he needed to move in a different direction. The strategic goal to restore the Union was not a good enough reason to keep the Northern states interested and behind the war.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Abraham Lincoln uttered these words on June 17, 1858 at the Republican state convention in Illinois. Three short years later, the first shots of the Civil War would be fired at Fort Sumter. Brothers fighting brothers, killing 620,000 of their own. This would be the start of the bloodiest war in American history. The debate over popular sovereignty, the conflicting opinions on slavery, and the publication of Uncle Tom’s Cabin all lead to the inevitable declaration of a civil war.

Lincoln served as a great president who took on challenges head on. The biggest issue he faced was the Civil War. The Civil War was a conflict about slavery and expanding it. Lincoln’s goal was to gradually put an end to slavery however, the South did not agree with this and decided to (according to the government) rebel against the country. Doing this meant the beginning of a war where a country would fight itself. It was the North against the South. While the North was abiding to the government’s regulations they had to fight the South. After all the battles of fighting each other the Civil War went down into American History as one of their bloodiest wars. As a threat to the South Lincoln ordered the South to give in and join the Union again. He warned them that if this did not happen, he would free the slaves under their custody. He gave them a time limit for this but the South did not listen nor did they give in. As a result, Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation.

Abraham Lincoln, the commander and chief of the Union forces, along with many other Northerners believed that Slavery was not only fundamentally wrong, but it was a great humiliation to America. One can see that with these differences a conflict would be inevitable, but not many had predicted that a full-blown war would break out. One did and after three bloody and costly years for both sides we come to the date of July 1, 1863.

     The South’s dominating strategy in winning the civil war was attrition. They believed they could wear down the political will of the North if they held out long enough to make the Northerners tired and question value of the means to achieve the ends. Military stalemates, guerilla war tactics and inconclusive battles would help the South achieve this goal. “Confederate armies did not have to invade and conquer the North: they needed only to hold out long enough to force the North to the conclusion that the price of conquering the South and annihilating its armies was too high, as Britain had concluded in 1781 and as the United States concluded…” (Why Did the Confederacy Lose?, pg 117)The South really enjoyed McClellan’s performance in the Southern theatre with his tendency to retreat when he could have won. This was another helpful hand the South would need to cause attrition. In response, Lincoln knew he had to do two things to prevent attrition and win the war more quickly. He needed to fire McClellan, and shift the theme of the war in the view of the North so that it would not lose its thunder. He did this by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation and converting the war for unionism into the war for morality. The

Most Northern Americans would eventually learn to love Lincoln’s courage; however, many Southern Americans would despise Lincoln. Throughout the civil war many lives were lost, and many families were torn apart. Lincoln would remain a strong figure throughout the war. He would give his people hope, he would give his people courage, and he would give his people strength. Around the time the Civil War was drawing to a close, Lincoln was being reelected. The civil war started on the Fort sumter , there has been a lot of tension because of the Fort sumter between the union and the confederacy for several months. The state wanted the union to return the Fort Sumter but they didn’t want to return they refused to give it up so the confederacy had no choice but to go to war with them to get the Fort Sumter back to them.
