Humans have the privilege of being one of the smartest beings on the planet. We have the ability to think about what is right from wrong and do what is best for our world and all who inhabit it. Many of the other animals who inhabit this earth depend on our decisions for their wellbeing. Unfortunately, many humans neglect how important the existence of these animals and inflict horrid acts upon them. Such abusive acts can be domestic, organized, or through factory farms. In each of these scenarios, the animals are not capable of making their own decisions. This leads to the widespread debate on whether animals should be given specific rights. By granting animals certain rights, the countless horrific events they are forced to face can be developed …show more content…
Thousands of animals are abused daily in homes everywhere which can range from physical harm to neglecting. A large problem that is currently affecting a quarter of a million domestic animals today is the act of hoarding. This is defined when “an individual is housing more animals than he or she can adequately care for” (). In these circumstances, animals are surrounded by very unsanitary conditions, receive malnutrition, and can eventually die. The species susceptible to this abuse can range from dogs, cats, reptiles, birds, rodents, exotics, and farm animals. Currently, Hawaii and Illinois are the only two states that have specific laws regarding animal hoarding. If all the states in the America joined together to prevent animals from being forced into living an unacceptable life, there will no longer be suffering. These animals deserve the right to have better homes and should be given the right that guarantees this. Additionally, it has been stated that many times animals are harmed when there is domestic abuse among the family. If there is a considerable amount of tension in a household many times the anger is taken out on the animal. It has been stated that “a person who harms humans will almost certainly harm animals” (). This further emphasizes the fact that animals should be given the right to receive certain standards of living that guarantee happy lives without abuse. Animals “lack the …show more content…
Two of the leading types of organized abuse is dogfighting and cock fighting. In dog fighting, two dogs are trained to fight each other causing extreme injury or even death. This “continues to occur in every part of the country and in every type of community” (). The dogs used for fighting are kept isolated their entire lives from other dogs and are given steroids and other drugs to enhance their aggressiveness. No animal should be forced to become a savage beast that is used to inflict harm on other organisms. Animals should be given the right to make sure they are given to individuals who will develop mutual relationships with them and make sure they live happy, content lives. Cock fighting is a very similar event that puts birds to fight each other to the death using daggers that are placed on their legs. Like with dog fighting, the sole purpose of this horrible deed is money. In cock fighting, roosters are also given steroids and vitamins to enhance aggressiveness and like the dogs, they also go through abusive training. Additionally, rooster’s feathers are plucked and their wattles are cut off. In dog fighting, the tails are docked and the ears are cropped. Due to our selfishness, this mutilation, often done using inhumane methods, is occurring right now in our communities. Since there are never any strict background checks on the person who is adopting/purchasing the
For many years there has been an ongoing debate on whether or not animals should be given rights, even there own bill of rights. Some who are against the animal bill of rights argue that testing products on animals is important to the safety of humans. Others who want the new bill of rights claim that animals have feelings and that science is treating them inhumanely. Animal activists also add that animals are intelligent beings and are aware of how they are treated. Based on science proving animal activists correct on many of their points, this calls for a new bill of rights, in the United States, especially written for the protection and care of wild and domestic animals.
Is it ethical for animals to have the same rights as humans? During this paper I will present the views of both sides. I will try my best to give the reader a chance to come to there own unbiased conclusion. I will talk about the key areas of animal ethics. I will present the facts and reasoning behind the arguments over Animal cruelty, testing, hunting, and improper housing. My conclusion will hopefully bring us closer to answering many of the question surrounding “Animal Rights and Ethics”.
Throughout history, humans have utilized nonhuman animals for the benefit of mankind. This tendency increased as civilization developed, and presently, necessitated by staggering population growth and technological progress, human use of animals has skyrocketed. We eat them, we breed them, we use them as test subjects. Some people have begun to question the ethics of it all, sparking a debate on animal treatment and whether or not they have rights. In a paper on the subject, Carl Cohen lays out his definition of rights, explains their relationship with obligations, and uses these ideas to present the argument that manifests clearly in his piece’s title, “Why Animals Have No Rights”. THESIS
1. ATTENTION GETTER: Millions of animals are abused each year. Over a million of these animals are abused or killed just due to the involvement with domestic violence. Despite animal cruelty being a felony which can result in jail time for over 15 years and 500,000 dollars in fines, it is still an issue which occurs on a daily basis across the United States. It is important for these animals to not go unnoticed, which can be achieved if society became more enlightened and educated on the topic of animal cruelty. (Pacelle, 2011).
In today’s society animals still do not have all the rights that they deserve. We still perform medical experiments, hunt them for “fun” and food, and keep them locked up in cages for “entertainment” at zoos. If animals had rights humans would not be using them for selfish purposes for fun and entertainment. In the article by Jeremy Rifkin it is mentioned that “researchers are finding that many of our fellow creatures are more like us than we had ever imagined. They feel
Animal abuse can be a precursor to future crimes. Experts have conducted hundreds of studies about the connection between human on animal crimes and human on human crimes. They have determined that people who abuse or neglect their animals tend to move to other crimes as the abuser ages. If people watched these animal abusers they could see the signs that they might commit future crimes. There is a link between murderers and animal abusers. These killers tend to start early; their first victims tend to be the stray cat in their neighborhood or even their neighbor’s dog. Murderers tend to stick to animal victims until they do not get enough pleasure from them and move to larger targets. Child abusers and those who abuse their significant other tend to be the people that hit and kick their pets for no particular reason other than for their own
“Nearly as many, 68 percent, were concerned or very concerned about the well-being of animals used in ‘sports’ or contests as well as animals in laboratories (67 percent) (Kretzer, 1).” Many people question whether an animal is capable of thought and emotions. Others feel as though animals are the equivalent of humans and should be treated as such. Since the 1800’s, animal rights has been a topic that has several different sides including two extremes. If animals can react to their environment, emote, and are aware of things done to or with them, then they should have similar rights to humans.
Over the centuries, animals have suffered from cruelty from humans. In the United States, animals are beaten, neglected, or forced to struggle for survival. Animals have been inflicted with pain from humans for reasons other than self-defense. They have been slaughtered for their food and fur for personal gain in profit. In a majority of cases they have even been abused for someone’s own personal amusement or out of rage filled impulses. In some cases animals are found and rescued. They are given the second chance in life to experience what life should be like compared to what they once had.
The discretion between animal versus human equality has been a controversial subject for many years. Philosophers and activists have pushed this matter into debate among the general society in our culture. What exactly is moral equality for animals? Some say it is equal rights to animals, and others say it is equal consideration of the animal. To understand the scope of equality based on rights, one must unfold the determination of a right in itself. Carl Cohen argues that animals have no rights, because they do not have the ability to know what a right is, but should never be treated inhumanely (Cohen 339). I will argue that Cohen’s view on animal rights is valid and sound, because animals are of instinct nature and do not perceive in according to human perception. Also, the opposite view would have detrimental effects on our population, economy, and natural habitat. Nevertheless, animals have the ability to feel pain and that aspect, certainly, for the sake of our morality, cannot be ignored.
Seems rhetorical, but the fact is animals live through this everyday, without even given the choice. As humans, we establish our authority among all living beings, but for what reasons? Are humans better than all other species? Or is it true that we should hold a precedence over nonhuman animals? The ultimate question then remains, should animals have as much or equal to the same rights as humans? Their are endless arguments for and against this question, and many sub arguments that go hand in hand with each side. In this paper, I will discuss the definition of what animal rights entails and expand on the history that developed it’s meaning. Furthermore, I will thoroughly discuss, reason, and explain each opinion presented by our current society as well as the positions held by previous philosophers. Lastly, I will draw a conclusion to the opinions presented by discussing my personal position on the argument of animal rights.
A cat being made to eat its young, dogs being forced to fight each other, a cow made to eat cow meat, or a horse branded with hot irons on genital parts. Horrible acts of man against creatures with no way to protect themselves. Yet what if, there was a way we could do it for them, a way to be their voice, to stop this cruel injustice? Animal protection laws should be improved , enforced, and the penalties for these transgressions should be severe.
In the last decade, the views and forms of animal cruelty have changed. Many people have different views of an animal’s rights or purpose. Some people believe that animals have no rights and are a piece of property to be utilized by humans. To others, animals can still be used by humans, but they have emotions as well. A few people consider that only certain animals with high intelligence like chimpanzees or monkeys, should not be used by man, and they should have all the rights that man has currently (“Animal Rights” , 2009). Domestic violence has a correlation with animal abuse. In a survey, 71% of domestic violence victims also reported that their abuser also targeted pets/animals. The most common animals who are abused are cats, dogs, horses,
One of the topics that are debated the world over every year is the politics of animal rights. While there are a lot of people who are passionate about making a change and helping other people recognize the rights of animals, there are an equal number of people who abuse these rights for their own selfish reasons.
Animal rights are an important topic to discuss and review. The trouble is the vast diversity of how people see humans and animals and how they are different and yet the same. Animals are in every aspect of our lives in how they are utilized to make our lives easier, to sustain us, or as a pet. Unfortunately, the line of animals and humans blurs as the widely known belief that we are a derivation of an animal and we should treat them as we would ourselves. This viewpoint, however, can be taken to an extreme as we see pets that can be pampered quite a bit. Relating back to the four authors in our text, there is considerable controversy on how animals should be treated. While some interesting positions arise with the various authors, to
For many years now the world has seen controversy over the rights of animals and if they think and feel like humans do. Many people see animals as mindless creatures or as food, while others think they have emotions and can feel pain. In other countries animal protection laws are in place that are strictly enforced and seem to work well with the system. In the United States however; some of the animal rights laws are considered to be useless and under-enforced (Animal Legal & Historical Center). More people today are beginning to see that animals should have rights and should be protected by laws and regulations (Animal Legal & Historical Center). Sadly there are many people residing in the United States who don’t take animal rights or protection laws seriously. These people abuse animals in many ways, including food industries that disobey the regulations set in place for the slaughter of animals used for consumption. Luckily for the animals there are people who fight for their rights and the enforcement of laws called animal rights activists.
