The primer is used as a good foundation for paint to adhere to. The color and distribution of the subsequent coats will be more consistent and easier to work with if you lay a good coat of primer down. Additionally, all body putty repairs and fixed flaws must be sprayed with primer in order to seal the repair. After two coats of primer, you are ready to apply your paint. There are two main types of paint you can use on your vehicle, and it will depend on your budget. A single stage paint is a one-step solution. “Rustoleum” is an example of a one stage paint, as it has the base coat (color) and clear coat (clear protectant layer) all in the same can. This is excellent for a low budget and a less technically skilled painter as a gallon of one-stage paint is all you need and it can be applied using a roller. The finish will be aesthetically adequate but will only last for about a year or two. A duel stage paint will consist of a base coat and a clear coat. This will be more expensive as you need to buy more paint, but will last more than five years if done properly. The base coat will contain the color, and the clear coat will seal the base coat and protect it. Color polishing, while not necessary, is a great way to take your paint job to the next level. Wet sand your new finish with 1200 grit sandpaper. Wet sanding is a process where you continually wet the surface that you are sanding in order to remove dust as you sand. Once you have wet sanded the whole vehicle, clean the surface and buff the paint with a commercial buffer and polish. The finish should radiate with a mirror shine, giving the base coat color a more vivid and enhanced appearance.
