Why Do We Need Stricter Gun Control Laws

Every year thousands of people die by gunfire. Thousands of families lose loved-ones because of senseless crimes in which guns are used. Many political figures and innocent civilians debate the issue of gun-control.The current gun laws range from being able to purchase and keep a gun with no provisions, or with provisions. (NRA-ILA) People on the pro gun regulation side argue that less guns means less gun violence. While people on the no gun regulation side argue that guns do not kill people, people kill people. Both are fair arguments. But, without question, The United States Federal Government should enact stricter gun laws because of the gun-related suicides, the evidence of a decrease in gun violence when laws are put into place, and the fact that guns are rarely used for self-defense.

This is indeed a fair argument. However, there is much evidence to prove that with few laws to prevent citizens from carrying guns now in the U.S. now, citizens fail to use guns to protect themselves. According to Procon.org, of the millions of violent crimes committed between the years 2007 and 2011, only .079% of victims used a firearm to protect themselves. Most people are able to have guns in their possession but do not choose to protect themselves or their family with them. People are not using guns for the right reason, therefore there is no point to keep them around. To go along with that, also according to Procon.org, in the year 2010, a total of 230 people committed a “justifiable homicide,” with the use of a gun, while 8,275 people committed a “criminal homicide” with the use of a gun. The criminal side of this ratio is too heavily favored. This ratio should at least be half and half before the U.S. federal government even considers letting every citizen keep their gun.
