Social media, what was made to be a simple way to keep up with friends, now controls most of our lives. I don't think I can even tell you how many times I came so close to deleting all my social media, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Watching the apps dance around on my phone, I just can't press the little X. What if's start to run through my head, 'What if I miss something important?' 'What if someone tries to get in contact with me?' and so on. Now don't get me wrong, social media was a brilliant idea. In just a few clicks you can reconnect with people from your past. Thanks to Snapchat I talk to three of my cousins every single day and Instagram is how I knew who my current best friend is. There are tons of advantages of social media. One popular one is being able to keep friends and family posted about whats going on in your life. If your page is private, which means only friends can see your page, why not post an entire album of pictures from your most recent …show more content…
Social media is flawed, a number of likes on a picture isn't just a number anymore, to some people its their self worth. I've had a friend cry to me because they don't get as many likes as a girl in her school. One disadvantage of social media is, it killed relationships. In today's sad world it's a bigger shock if both parties of the relationship are faithful, rather than one or both cheating. Thanks to social media, this was made extremely easy. Boyfriends and girlfriends like and comment on other's pictures, they direct message these people. On snap chat, every picture disappears in at least 10 seconds after the receiver opens the message. This makes it extremely easy to cheat and cover their tracks. Another disadvantage of social media is that it leaves you susceptible to receiving friend requests or even direct messages from people you don't know or thought you did. Of course you can always block or decline these
“We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how we do it” (Qualman, n.d). According to Merrain Webster 1828, “social media is form of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messaging, and other online (such as video). Technology has involved into something that everyone can utilize effectively just by the swipe of finger or by pressing a single button. We don’t have to go the post office for hand written letter from families and friends abroad, but we can get them through simply opening a chat box online. However, social media has become the addiction to many young people today and even adults alike. We eat with your phones. We study and communicate with others on your various devices. We even go into the bathroom with our devices to ensure that we don’t miss a tweet, recent Instagram post or a WhatsApp message.
It’s hard to believe, that only a decade ago social media took off and became the new trend. Of course, there was Friendster and Myspace that had been around for a few years but most of the world’s population hadn’t come around to it yet. Nowadays, social media has taken over our lives. It has influenced every decision we have made in life in one way or another.
One reason why social media is positive because it connects people. According to Kelly Wallace in the article The upside of selfies: Social media isn't all bad for
The number of followers you have on ‘Instagram’ can be taken as how popular or unpopular you are and the number of likes you get on ‘Facebook’ can be taken as how many people like you, this is a completely unrealistic method of judgement. Another issue with social media is younger people have the tendency to rely on it to socialise; instead of physically going out and talking to people face to face, they are communicating through a screen. I use social media on a daily basis and it’s helped me keep in touch with people I can’t see often as well as allowing me to get closer to those I am with often. The way I see it is the media creates strong long lasting friendships as well as temporary fake
I agree with everything what Simon Sinek says, we easily allow social media to take advantage of us. We want to always take that short cut to becoming happy, but since it’s a short cut it only lasts for a short amount of time. We can easily become addicted to social media because of dopamine that feeling of feeling good easily makes it hard to break of the addiction. He also said that we are growing in a generation with lower self-esteem, because of social media and the lack of good leadership in this world. For example I used to be honestly addicted to social media, I would come back to Facebook or Instagram as soon I had the chance to see how many likes I got. The second I started to use Instagram and Facebook less, I started to feel less
It is no secret that social media has taken over a lot of our time, and perception on society. It influences our day to day lives without us really knowing. Social media usually portrays one’s life to be perfect, or it makes us feel like one’s life needs to be perfect. For this reason being, social media can be a bad thing. In "The Social Networks" by Neal Gabler, he explains how media has taken away the meaning of friendship or anything 'real'. In the long run, social media makes things seem better than they actually are, it gives us unrealistic expectations for our friend and family interactions, which kills the chance of having actual friendships because our expectations are so high. So, here are the reasons elaborated on why social media
Nowadays, many debates insinuate how social media is pointless and detrimental. Base on my research, I hold a different opinion - social media is not only just snapping photos and watching funny videos, but it also increases the generation of informational content and citizen participation in political discussions. In early 2011, thousands of Syrian, especially youth from labor unions, indented to risk their lives to protest against the authoritarian government. By August 2015, more than 250,000 citizens had been killed in the conflict. Furthermore, there are more than 11 million citizens who had been forced to be loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. Otherwise, they would of been compelled to leave their homes. Referring to Saxon, D.’s case study, Syrian civil war stimulated citizen journalists’ willingness to get evolved in politics (Saxon, 2013). In four-and-a- half years of armed conflict, hot-blooded citizens who were behind the revolutions employed social media as a temporary press, contributing with their documentaries of the revolutions from the inside of the country. In the case of Syrian civil war, the progress in technology and the presence of social media provided opportunities to the citizens; empowering them to speak up about political issues in online platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube (Wall & Zahed, 2014). By examining how and to what degree citizen journalism has reshaped the communication model through social media, it is found that
Firstly, social media has been part of our lives since the late 1980’s because it has been part of our lives there are too many people who
It is the most effective and time efficient way to reach a large customer base. It is the best way to show your fans your business and receive their feedback. Using a social media platform is a very effective way to market your business to your advantage. Imagine launching a new product and it receives 1 million responses in a matter of minutes. That would not be possible without the many social media platforms available today.
Having social media platform changes privacy into public, no matter how private you may try to be. Social media changes everyday no matter the platform. It could be face book, twitter, instagram, or snap chat. The biggest non privacy platform is Face Book. Many people has gotten so use to posting their daily life on social media that it never dons to them that they have no privacy. When people are getting ready to post a “status” or a picture they don’t stop and think about what it is that there posting or take a moment and think like “do I really want the world to know this about me” or “is this picture appropriate for the internet”. Being is okay sometimes for certain things, but everyone needs a little privacy weather it’s safety or something as little as sharing your location. Many people take to instagram and post inappropriate pictures or private pictures like money and things they may do to make their money. They don’t think about the “friends” or “followers” or just anyone in general of who may be watching. Social media today isn’t just a way to tell the world your business, but also one of the biggest ways to get “caught up” if you may be doing anything wrong. On social media people would do anything to be in someone else’s business, they go as far as making fake pages and it’s really the law enforcement “following” or your “friend” on social media.
The rise of technology has shaped our generation in so many ways. As a child, I remember going to the library and checking out books when I had a paper or project due for class. As I got older the need for finding books or publications for research purposes decreased considerably. As I entered middle school, a class was being taught on computer literacy, and looking back on that class I see how important it was to get started early. I can only recall one time in the last three years where I stepped foot into a public library, and that was to place my vote for the 2016 presidential election. The fact that I can hop on my phone, and search anything I could possibly want to know about, and that information be displayed in a matter of seconds is an amazing and wonderful thing. The downside to the capability of information at your fingertips is that it causes people (including myself) to be lazy. Vocabulary and literacy levels are lower now, because you don’t have to read several books to find what you are looking for. I loved reading for pleasure when I was younger, and still do, but that was because I was required to read more to find answers to questions. Siri and Google have almost eliminated the need to do such research.
MS LOPEZ I AM AWARE THIS IS NOT ACCEPTED LATE BUT MY WIFI HAS BEEN DOWN SINCE YESTERDAY MORNING AND I JUST GOT IT UP AND RUNNING IM SO SORRY THE ACTUAL ESSAY IS EXACTLY 750 WORDS!
Have you ever had a good or bad experience with social media? Have you ever been a part of a protest that was started on social media? I think that social media is a good thing because you can have so much fun on it and even make friends on in. Without that you would be limited to the kids in your neighborhood and in some places there are not a lot of kids that you can make friends with or they do not live close so you have to drive there. That is all fixed with social media. Like recently I have found some friends on social media that I play games with. They are super nice and without social media I would have never had that experience I would have to play be myself all the time and have no one to talk to. But now I have the chance to make friends and have fun with them even tho they live far away. Also colleges and most jobs look at your social media account to see what kind of person you are and if you are able to work so not only can you have fun but you can also potentially make money from it and you can make friends. Things like Facebook are so convenient to talk with friends or family without that we would need to call them and that is just so much harder to do then
I live in a generation that grew up using technology and using social media. We have the opportunity to be connected to the world online at our fingertips at all times of everyday. Most of us are online in some way and are always connected. As time goes on I see us getting more addicted and dependant on our cell phones. From a sociological perspective, these phones are basically our way to the universe. Each individual that uses it is connected to hundred of millions of other individuals and together we make up the online social world. I chose to give up all social media. This includes instagram, twitter, tumblr, facebook, and snapchat. Social media is meant to connect us together but instead it disconnects us by having addicting features,
Social media is basically applicable internet apps that allow users to create their own media and interact with others while online. It takes many ways of media to use social media. For instance, Snapchat uses filters to make a picture something different. Facebook provides boards on which users post videos, photos, and websites. YouTube allows people to upload videos of their own on their own online pages. Facebook also has Messenger, a place where Facebook users can message each other freely. This is not always a good things. It sometimes makes it easier for cyberbullying and mean posts.
