“Why am I a Human Services Major?”
I want to pursue a career in Human Services because this is where my calling is. When graduation got closer and closer teachers, staff, and students asked “Where are you going from here? What is the overall goal?” I told them that I was going to Cazenovia College to study Human Services and that my overall goal was to become a medical Social Worker in a hospital and be placed on cases with children. Once I told them this they all said I was going in the right direction and that I would be perfect for the job. I believe I can do this job and be successful because my childhood life and financial situation, being assaulted, and all the community service I have completed and awards I have received

My dad cheated on my mom when I was five years old my youngest sister was only four months old. At the time I obviously did not understand what was really happening. My grandmother told me a few years back about the day my dad sat down with me and told me that he was leaving our house. She said I called her and cried and said that I didn’t have a family anymore. She said that broke her heart and knowing how I felt about this at only age five breaks my heart today. Although my parents did split up my dad went to live back with his mother. We were able to see him every Tuesday, Wednesday and every other weekend. He actually used to be my hero. When I was in third grade both my parents found new people to be with. My dad actually was dating the women he cheated on my mom with. My mom was dating some guy she met online who became my step father. This affected my life greatly. I hated moving back and forth from house to house, I have been afraid of my dad my whole life I could say he had this tone of voice and everything he did was yell and scream. He used to hit

He would come home wasted after weeks of not being home; of me wondering where my father had been all those weeks. Staying up late on school nights just wishing for him to come home and tuck me in bed, to tell me he loved me, to ask me how my day was, or just tell me that he was there to stay. As a first grader it is hard to explain to your friends why they can not come to your house to play just knowing that if he is there that he will be drunk yelling at my mom for nothing. It got to the point to where he would come home after a few days and grab a suitcase and leave to go with his new girlfriend for a few days or even weeks. Right before he would leave I would always have hope that he would tell me where he was going or take me with him. I just wanted a father. My mother always told me that he would be back and to have hope; to always trust in her and that she would always be there for me. She was always my rock when I was younger. Until one day she finally told me what a monster the man I called my dad was. He was an abuser, physically and mentally. She told me the truth about the man that I wished was in my life for so long. He never wanted me. I was the youngest out

When I decided to change my major from Criminal Justice to Human Services, I was surprised by the wide variety of the field. Human Services offers a variety of opportunities for a number of meaningful careers. The most common is social work, but other options include; community outreach, volunteer management, and counseling. My interest lies in the field of drug and alcohol rehabilitation. I would like to work as a drug and alcohol addiction counsel or an advocate.
From since I was a young child I have always wanted to go into the field of Human Services. As I have grown I have decided that I would go into the Criminal Justice side of Human Services. By this I mean that I still want to help people, but I want to help people who have become criminals or who are on the path of becoming criminals. I especially want to help children and teens who have been in and out of a Juvenal Detention Center. From this passion I have decided that I want to go into one of three careers. These careers are as follows; Juvenile Defense Attorneys, Juvenile Counselor, or Juvenile Corrections Officer.

Majoring in Human Services/Social Work has always been a dream of mine. I have always wanted to help people who are in need. Life can definitely be rough, and can throw anything at any time, even when you aren’t expecting it. Whether it be financial problems, emotional problems, or mental problems, life can begin to take a toll on people. In particular, I am leaning towards working with children or adults who have mental health issues or have problems with substance abuse. With the possibility of possibly helping people who come from broken families or homes.

With the increased number of older adults in the population, more and more clinical psychologists are including this group are among their clients (Lacks, July 1982) It can become easy sometimes to look at a person and make assumptions for the person that you are interviewing. Growing up in a low income family and observing the struggles we faced on a daily basis, was one of reason why I attended college. This wasn’t a choice I made out of high school that many teenagers decide. For me, getting a feel for different areas in the human services field was the path I took. It was important for me to explore different options to see what I would want to spend the rest of my life doing. I loved all the different areas in which I explored, but wanted something more.
My home life wasn’t any better. Not only would I deal with my brothers being bullies, I constantly dealt with my step-parents yelling. My brothers would call me stupid and ugly. It was just dumb things my siblings would say, but for some reason it hurt a lot more than it should have.. My step-dad and step-mom was emotionally abusive, always making me feel bad for being moody or for not having high self-esteem. I was
