“Nothing is so dangerous to the progress of the human mind than to assume that our views of science are ultimate, that there are no mysteries in nature, that our triumphs are complete and that there are no new worlds to conquer.”- Humphry Davy (1778-1229), British chemist and inventor. This quote sums up my desire to pursue a degree in pharmacy. My interest is in finding ways to improve the field of pharmacy by thinking in a way that makes it possible to look at every unknown in medicines and find a way to produce an answer. I chose the profession of pharmacy for many reasons, a Doctor of Pharmacy degree is a step towards reaching my goals, and my background is a large part of me achieving my goals.
I chose the profession of pharmacy for personal reasons. My mother is a pharmacist in an independent pharmacy. As a child, I went to work with her and saw what she did daily. I began to like going to work with her and watch her check prescriptions, along with many other things. Even when she was out of the pharmacy, she would see customers in public and it was nice to see her say hello t these people I did not even know. I could tell the pharmacy had its own small town feel, where everyone knew each other. I liked the idea of that. Also, as I got further along in school, I had an interest in science and math. Everyone desires to feel loved, valued, and appreciated. A career in pharmacy opens a door into the lives of other to make a difference. My intentions, now and as a pharmacist, ensures the value of each person by offering quality patient, guiding them with healthy lifestyle choices, and respecting each individual. Being a pharmacists offers a chance to care for those in need. Opportunities to brighten some one’s day with a listening ear or a smile comes occurs on a daily basis. From there, I began to explore more of what a career in pharmacy would mean and take the steps necessary to pursue my dream. As I reflect on the past and look forward, becoming a Doctor of Pharmacy is still the clear answer to achieving both my immediate and long-term goals. My immediate goal is to work towards additional education to be better equipped to utilize my undergraduate degree. In particular, I have a strong interest in applying my knowledge of biochemistry to the area of pharmacy in order to better understand how different medications work, how to help patients understand their medications, and how to solve problems to better care for patients. Ultimately, through achieving a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, I desire to develop a meaningful career that would allow for life-long learning and impacting lives.
Pharmacy is a prolific field of study that is taking a prime position in the world of academia. It is quite demanding and needs completeness and vigilance. Thus, by going through pre-pharmacy, it will help me reshape my educational and career aspirations by bringing into reality what pharmacy entails through prerequisite coursework. I will also be able to come to terms with what the profession has at the end of the tunnel and asses with it marches my career goals. The profession is loaded with numerous employment and personal advancement opportunities, and I am motivated to study pre-pharmacy since it will spark of my innovativeness and optimistic that my future days would be worth the trouble.
My childhood unleashed a desire to know how things worked and why things happened; this soon flourished into a more specific interest in the field of Pharmacy. Medicine fascinated me, driving my obsession to understand all of the dynamics of pharmaceutical drugs. My studies in Biology at New Jersey City University, and my current occupation as a Certified Pharmacy Technician, led my desire to go further with my education in pursing an advanced degree as a Doctor of Pharmacy. My undergraduate career has prepared me extensively, such as requiring that I take on a wide range of science-based courses including Biochemistry, Genetics, and Microbiology. My hard work and dedication led to me being on the Dean's List for a number of semesters. I was also honored to be part of The National Honor Society of Leadership and Success and The Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society.
The reason why I want to become a pharmacy technician is because I want to feel part of something that would differences someone’s life. As the first generation in my family to go to college I learned the importance of education. I graduated from Benedictine University with a Bachelors in Science and an Environment Certificate. I became intregted by pharmacy when I started to spent countless hours at a hospital watching my grandfather go in and out of surgeries and treatments for cancer. Seeing the different medication being handed to him inspired me to understand biological and chemical processes that happened. A Pharmacists, role is to aim to help patients treat illness by introducing new developed treatment of medicines with a range of patients. I began to take special interest in memorizing all my grandfather’s medications and how practical and clinical aspect pharmacy worked.
My first reason I decide to do pharmacy, I want to help my mom, because she has the medical health issue. She has been taking some medication, but sometimes the medication she was taking will make her feel worse, and she will start thinking that she might have other illnesses, but I did not have an idea, that there are some medications can cause sides effect, and precautions in the body, until when I start the pharmacy program, then I begin to discover more information about the medications and how it works in the body. Through my upbringing and exposure to the healthcare profession through parents' careers, I have had the opportunity to witness their commitment and empathy towards their clients, and have grown to appreciate the work that medical professionals do. Pharmacists are ambitious and reliable people that interact and connect with their clients while providing treatment. They make personal sacrifices to ensure the wellbeing of others and I genuinely aspire to make that kind of difference in the lives of those struggling with illnesses while being in a profession that really interests me.
While growing up, I spent a good portion of my life struggling with asthma. At a very young age, I realized how much trust I always had in health officials to save my life. This trust made me develop a strong interest in the health sector. Not too long after my first semester at Madonna University, I Atime sitting in amazing pharmacy lectures. My interest increased in my second year, when I took a pharmacology class and made the best score. During the summer of 2012, I decided to work in a pharmacy. It was a terrific experience. I loved every day and looked forward to the next. Pharmacy has many promising career options, which range from retail to drug research and everything between. All these options show how flexible pharmacy is. It enhances challenges in the work field, because no two days are the same. I have always found subjects like chemistry, biology, and pharmacology fascinating. These subjects have a direct relationship with Pharmacy, and my love for them increases my ability to excel in any Pharmacy College. For me, choosing to pursue a career in pharmacy was far from planned. I knew that I wanted to find a profession which I could find self fulfilling. So, one could say I knew as much about pharmacy and its history as an average person. I’ve always imagined that pharmacy and the entire profession as a whole was relatively modern. In other words, I never really took pharmacy as a profession with a history. I’ve always thought that pharmacy and medicine, as one, essentially made its largest strides with the technology boom of the 21st century. During my visit, I realized I was both right, but also, wrong in a sense.
The career that I am interested in pursuing is a Pharmacists. The number one reason I have decided to become a pharmacist is because I want to help and assist others. The satisfaction of me helping a patient get better quickly is the motivation that drives me. The second reason is the act of working with other health care professionals. Pharmacist have to communicate with other professionals as a team to avoid errors. Communication and connection is a major key in today’s society, in which I like with a passion. The big career dream began when my older cousin sister became the first in the family to graduate from college with a college degree. Her getting a well-paying job and taking care of my aunt and uncle led me to work hard and achieve pharmacy just like her. This semester has been a tough one but I feel like I have learned a lot about pharmacy over these past few months. I have had a lot of courses so far and in each one, I have been able to make connections to the practice of pharmacy. In this essay, I will reflect on some of things I learned in my courses and how they relate to my future career as a pharmacist. I will also identify areas where certain topics intersect in different courses.
Today in the 21st century the roles of pharmacist have expanded tremendously. Before pharmacist had the role of solely dispensing drugs. Pharmacists were limited to only being regulatory or clinical pharmacist. Back then they were called medical purveyors who were much like today’s regulatory pharmacist and hospital pharmacist who are similar to hospital pharmacist. Now pharmacists carry many roles in healthcare. Pharmacist can play roles in public health, community, health systems, state, and federal government.
My desire to help people is a major factor in my decision to become a pharmacist. I have aspired to be a pharmacist since I was in the eighth grade. I have taken several different steps to assist me in attaining my dream. The classes I have completed to aid me with my goal have been very stimulating.
