Investigating Our Major There are many majors that are suited for all different types of people. While some know exactly what they want to do, others have to switch at least once to find out what they want. Originally, I was a psychology major and I knew exactly what I wanted to do, but then after a while I didn’t feel the passion I had when I first took the class even though I was extremely knowledgeable in it. It was then I realized I started day dreaming more of majoring into education. I then took the switch and became an education major. This report allowed me to dig deeper into this major since I, myself, am still looking more into it and learning along the way. Three key points I felt were beneficial to me were the prerequisites of this major, various activities I can do to gain experience, and the career opportunities I would have with this degree. Almost any major requires a few things that have to be done before actually focusing on it such as finishing your basics or taking an introduction class. Before focusing on my major there are a few things that need to be completed in order for me to continue on. According to the road map provided by the University Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) one of the prerequisites the education major has is completing the general education core and taking an introduction class to education. One may think that this is the only thing standing in my way when actually there is much more that needs to be done. After completing those
There are numerous universities in Texas that offer great things. The hardest decision for me is picking and choosing a university that offers everything I want. Texas A&M university is a good fit for me because it offers psychology, a great variety of extracurricular activities.
“It takes a village to raise a child.” I never quite understood that saying when I was growing up, but my experiences teaching and working in school settings have showed me how true it really is. Obtaining a degree in school psychology will allow me to give the support that students, families and educators need to ensure that every student will thrive.
I am Sam, a movie directed by Jessie Nelson, came to theatres January 25th, 2002. This movie takes the audience through the life Sam Dawson who has the mental ability of a seven year old. Besides his disability, the movie displays much more than just that. The main character Sam Dawson, somehow got a homeless women pregnant ( it was not made clear how). Once the child is born, the mother leaves Sam and the baby at a bus stop with the excuse that she never wanted to have a child with Sam and she only needed a place to sleep. From then, the movie takes off.
Everyone who decides to enroll in college must, at some point, think about what area they want to major in. There are many things that students consider when choosing a major. Some make their decision based on what they think can make them the most money once they begin their lives in the work force. However, many students believe that if you choose a major that interests you and challenges you then you can use those skills that can help you in any career. (R. Landrum & S. Davis, 2014) Let’s face it. Employers know that when they hire someone straight out of college they are not immediately going to know
Moreover, someone once told me “major in something that will make money and minor in something that you love”. When choosing a major people need to understand the financial side of a career path. Students should also do research on the employment rate for future years of their desired major. A physiology major cannot expect to make the salary of an engineering student. The university can only help you so much. While in college, students should focus on networking, becoming involved on campus and doing internships in order to obtain a job and not solely rely on the university because it is a competitive job market and companies want to hire the best of the best. Students need to “brand themselves”. Furthermore, SUNY Buffalo created a program known as the “Finish in 4” program should be incorporated in universities nationwide. Through an extensive but yet rewarding program students have the ability to graduate debt free, but they obtained it through hard work. It is a stress reliever for students because now they will graduate knowing they have a full time position waiting for them upon graduation. When students graduate they receive this paper known as the
I am sending an email in response to the question you posed in the videos. I am starting my third year in the Ph.D school psychology program. I switched from the Ed.S program to the Ph.D program this fall. I am not certain why I chose school psychology. My bacholers is in Political Science and Psychology. I always thought I was going to go to law school, I even took the LSAT. While I was applying for law schools, I decided the career may not make me happy, so I found school psychology. I also saw a lot of unemployed laweyers when I was applying for law school. I want to work with any population. My practcum last year was at an elementary, middle school, and high school. I enjoyed working with all of the age groups. I have worked with children
In the realm of the world we call college, there are many different paths one can take. When choosing the path of being an education major, one begins to see the benefits of their choice long before they see their degree. The field experience that is required with the courses one has to take for this major allow students to dip their toes into their field and get real life experience before entering the real world. This semester, I had the opportunity of working at Oasis Tutoring Center. While tutoring at this center, I was not only able to learn more about my ability to teach, but also connect these experiences to the psychology of education.
“Think of it like a layer cake. Starting at the bottom, you have the core network, infrastructure, and fabric, and on top of that you build.” This quotation by author, Joy Deja King explains that with everything one does, they have to start at the bottom. One cannot accomplish anything until building a good, solid foundation. This quotation applies very well to education. Before a job comes college, before college comes high school, before high school comes middle school, then grade school, kindergarten, and preschool. This is because one must learn the basic fundamentals necessary for the next step in life. This is exactly what general education courses aid with in college. These general education courses teach basic skills required for
I attended Lander University to obtain a degree in Nursing. I wanted to help people! I soon discovered that being a nurse is a dirty job and I did not enjoy blood and guts. I wandered over to the Education Department and was an Elementary Education Major for a while. I wanted to help children! After taking the Praxis and student teaching for a few weeks, I developed a dislike for the classroom environment. My next thought was to major in Sociology. I liked the idea of having
From Art History to Mathematics to Special Majors, Dartmouth offers a wide range of majors to explore, which was a crucial part of deciding where I wanted to transfer to. Although I am not sure about my intended major, one program that I am very interested in is the Education minor. After having close relationships with my high school teachers, I have become interested in the possibility of working in secondary education. Despite other schools having majors in these programs, I feel that Dartmouth’s minor would be the best program for me because the D Plan would give me more leeway for fellowships and other work
As a student at CMU, I believe this is the ideal environment for me to achieve my dreams. I believe I do not have the typical aspirations of others, I just have one goal that may seem simple yet also slightly daunting: to be happy. I believe by obtaining a degree in something I am passionate about would help me achieve this lifelong goal. I don’t believe that one day I will randomly wake up and feel very passionately about something, but I believe by becoming more involved in something that I have a small interest in, could blossom into a passion. Although I have not declared a major, I have found my happy place at CMU in the lab, which honestly shocked me. It is a way to apply my knowledge learned in lecture to real hands on experience which helps solidify the information. Currently I am an undeclared major, however, I have definitely narrowed my major selection down to a science. College hasn’t just advanced my academics, but it has also helped me gain valuable life experiences. I have learned how to shop on a budget and learn how to manage my time. With these valuable life experiences I believe I will be more ready to enter the real world after I graduate.
College is important to me because I feel like it is step one of many to achieving my goal of becoming a psychologist that helps people with their mental disorders. I chose Thomas College to be my college because I visited it during my senior year of high school and it seemed like a nice establishment. When I would think about attending Thomas I would mainly think about the strip of road between the hall of flags and the athletic center. I would often fantasize about myself walking that strip of road on my way to the gym because I really wanted to utilize the gym if I went here. I chose Psychology as my major because I have seen, heard and encountered mental disorders throughout my life and it’s just something I think I would really love to
1) The activities I enjoy the most are reading, playing chess, and my Magic © cards. The things that makes these activities enjoyable is the sheer fun that I have while participating in these activities. All of these activities help to calm me down and to help me get my mind off of negative thoughts or emotions. The reason they help me is because these activities hold certain memories and emotions, like for instance, my Magic © cards hold really good memories and emotions and that helps me to get out of a negative hole.
One of the most challenging hurdles I had found myself in during my undergraduate education was not knowing what I have wanted to do with my career once I had step out of the university sphere of education. Although, having spent my time within the undergraduate studies of Women’s Gender and Sexualities Studies and Human Development and Family Studies, I had not been a leisurelier discovery for myself. One of my personal struggle that I had encountered when it came to my undergraduate education was not having a clear focus of what the notorious question, “what do you want to do with your life?”. For the longest time, I had always thought that to be successful at the university level was having an education in the science technology programs. I had struggled with keeping my grades where I wanted them to be, feeling successful, and overall enjoy my college experience and feeling that I belonged to the University of Connecticut. That was until I had taken a Women’s Gender and Sexualities course at the University of Connecticut. I had found that there was more to school than having a science background of education and that a liberal arts foundation was more important to the enhancement of what I wanted to do with my career. When I finally realized and understood what that meant, I was able to apply myself into my academic, understand theories and critically analyze what it means to live in our society and who some parts need social change and advocacy for members. This was able to click for me when as my grade improved, my confidence increased, I became more involved within the university, and I felt an overall importance of who education would change my life again that was missing when I was trying to accomplish what others though
Dr Mangan was far more influential in my development as a psychologist than I realised when I was a student. I must confess that I didn’t warm to him as a teacher. When I peruse his publications it seems amazing that I cant find a full biography or bibliography of Mangan anywhere on the net. I am happy to fill that gap now. It is high time.
