To say cursive writing is pointless and not needed in the classroom is a far stretch. In my opinion we still need to at least learn it but not over bear on its importance. My first reason for this being said comes from the first article, in many cases it has helped students learn better than typing everything a teacher says. It makes the student work to learn how to summarize what the teacher is saying and helps improve because after so long of typing it is just muscle memory and requires not much skill to type. With that being said a student who writes more actually has to take the time to write and as he is repeating what the teacher said to write he is memorizing it as he goes so he can write it down. My Second reasoning for teaching
Did you know cursive takes away core subjects like Math and Reading? Well, it does and that’s bad because that means you could make you less smart. In my opinion, cursive writing should not be taught today. First, it takes too much time. Second, it’s frustrating for parents. Lastly, you can gain a life skill because cursive might be easy for you when you grow up.
In the article, “Why We Shouldn’t Write Off Cursive” by Bobby George and June George, talks about cursive. The authors argue how cursive should be taught in school and should be considered more valuable. Right now, 45 states has omitted cursive from the required school curricula. I remember when I studied in a private school at India, we had to learn cursive. It was not an optional, it was a must and we were pretty much was graded on how neat/good you write it. Personally, I think cursive is very neat, elegant, and rich looking and I believe it helps you get a good handwriting too.
Scientific studies show that writing in cursive “promotes hand-eye coordination, visual, fine motor and memory skills” (Cooper). People do not want cursive in school because paper and pencil cursive writing is done in school only and is useless outside of school. On the other hand, people believe cursive writing should be in school because it allows children to read historical documents like the Declaration of Independence. Cursive writing should be taught in school.
About 75% of second and third grade teachers teach their class cursive. Kids should learn cursive because they can be prepared for seeing more cursive when they grow older. But a lot of kids don’t learn cursive and they don’t understand it when they see cursive. They might just see weird scribbles. Kids should learn cursive in school they might need it one day. You never know, you could get a job that requires you to know cursive.
In 3rd grade summer school the first thing they showed us was cursive. Did you even know that hand writing is 50% of literacy? Or that it helps us write faster? Which is helpful for when we go to college. If we don’t learn cursive how on earth are we supposed to sign are name? Honestly in my opinion cursive should be taught today. It should be used in everyday life.
Some take the side that we need to continue to teach cursive. These people have even come up with some quite compelling augments. Including the claim that cursive helps simulate and develop the brain. Plus, the fact that without it students will not be able to read historical documents. If they can't do this then some of wonderful past will get lost. Some even go as far as saying that the students that wrote their S.A.T. essays in cursive received a higher score on them than those who wrote them in print. Now at first glance, these arguments might seem pretty great, right?
Do you think cursive should be taught in school? Schools should not teach cursive, instead they should teach kids how to sign their name and then move to another topic. Almost everything is done on computers now and handwriting is dying out. Even when people do use handwriting now most print instead of write cursive. Common core standards which is what most schools use isn't even teaching cursive any more.
Think about what you have done today before reading this. Did you brush your teeth, go to the bathroom, write something down? You probably have written something down without even knowing. Handwriting is very important in day to day life. Without it, there are many things that we could not do. If you know print that is great but you are even better off if you know cursive also. You will be able to read it, help those with disabilities, and be about to sing you signature.
In fifth grade, I got a letter from my grandparents and I said to my mom, “I can’t read it” She said, “Well it’s in cursive and I believe you didn’t learn that.” Still till this day in time I’m in eighth grade and I wonder why I didn’t learn cursive and is it that hard to learn?
What would it look like if cursive didn't even exist? Cursive writing should still be taught in school. Teaching cursive is needed for many things, mostly for enhancing your brain. Although people have computers and things that don't always need the use of paper and pen, cursive is still a very needed skill. In the following paragraphs, I will tell you why.
Is cursive writing still neccesary? Common Core Standards do not require cursive writing to be taught in our schools now days. In 2012 a survey was given to teachers and only 37% wrote in cursive themselves. Removing cursive writing classrooms is a controversial debate.
I don’t think cursive should be taught in classrooms. I was taught cursive in school, and I barely remember it, only my name. When I was learning cursive I was told it would be required in high school and adult life. That was incorrect, because now everything I do is typed; I rarely even have to print. I think schools should focus on getting students prepared for today’s society, and teach them typing.
Cursive writing is highly unnessecary in the modern world today, and should not be required for a student to learn.
There are alot of people who say that cursive is unnecessary this day in age.Well i disagree, I believe that cursive handwriting is a great thing to learn.
I think students should be taught how to write in cursive at school from my own experience. When i was in school we were taught cursive and i feel like it helped me process the material better. "It requires students to summarize ideas rather than simply recording every word the teacher says."
