I rarely spend any time focusing on one specific task. My mind often wonders and I start doing multiple things at one time. In one day I multi-task for roughly 7-8 hours. It is pretty easy for to turn to non-computer activities if I'm not around people. When I am doing an activity I do not want to do, such as read or doing homework, I will take breaks. The most common task I try solely concentrating on is reading and even then I am constantly taking breaks. Whether its to eat, listen to music, go on social media, or watch television. Eventually those 10-15 minute breaks turn into hours. When I'm not trying to avoid reading I find myself thinking of other things and not comprehending what I'm reading because of it. I will not read for pleasure …show more content…
I believe the way I use technology has helped me fully understand concepts I did not understand on my own. I do not like asking for help so when I do not understand something I look it up online. I would not go through several books looking for an answer to a question I didn't understand. it is time consuming and I would have to look at several resources to fully comprehend the topic. In today’s age, I can type my question into a browser and immediately have multiple links to look choose from. It is efficient and since it is instant it gives me time to either research more topics or move on to a different activity. However, I realized that I spend an unnecessary amount of time on my computer and social media. It has begun to effect my time management . In order to change this, I will turn my phone off while I do homework so I am not tempted to log on to my social media accounts. On the occasion that I have a lot of homework I will reward myself ten minute breaks every 45 minutes to temporarily distract myself from my assignments. I will also not turn my laptop on unless I need it for my assignments. and the assignments I do need the internet for I will reserve for last so that I am not tempted to engage in anything that is not assigned
When I was younger, I would read book after book. I would get through multiple series and have fun while doing so. Ever since I’ve gotten to know more about the internet, and since it has impacted my education, this has changed. We use technology to write papers, research topics, or to do our homework. But, while doing so, we tend to wander and do other things too, such as play games or go on social media. Ever since the internet and all that it has to offer has come into my life, my ability to read long books has changed. In junior year of high school I assigned to read 20 to 30 pages everyday out of my book for the AP U.S. History course I was taking. When I would sit down to read these set of pages every day, I would feel as if it were a chore, as if reading had now become a chore for me. In addition, my attention span while reading those pages would decrease the more I read. The further into the pages I got, the more distracted I got. The internet took a hold of me and has changed my way of thinking just like the millions of others that use
As a kid I have struggled in school and in reading. I had found out that I have a learning disability when I was in elementary school. I was put in special education classes through elementary all the way until now. In elementary school I was put into a speech learning class all the way to my junior year. I could never read as well as the other students. But in middle school I started reading graphic novels and I loved them, for some reason they were easier to read. I also made a lot of new friends just because of those types of books. In elementary school I had a 4th grade reading level but when I passed my speech class in high school my junior year I had a 10th grade reading level. I basically spent my high school career in the library. If
As we have learned, intentional teachers are “teachers who have a purpose for the decisions they make and can explain that purpose to others” (Bredekamp, 2014, p. G-4). Literacy is not only writing and reading, but it is the ability to put the two skills together (“What is Literacy,” 2015). I believe that all aspects of literacy is extremely important and is a necessity in every area of life.
Chapter 3, was one of most helpful chapters, it was achieving your purpose for reading. Chapter 3 helped me get involve with my readings by annotating the text and developing questions within the text while I am actively engaging with my studies. Also, this chapter showed me different note taking styles which are mind mapping, outline, SQ3R, and Cornell notes. I can make a mixture of these note taking styles to my preference.
People build themselves in a world that is building them through their choice of words and actions; an important factor of a person’s identity is the way he/she speaks or spoken (Shor, 2009). Critical literacies enable students address social issues in their real world using their interests and experiences from the literacy perspective (p.176). Learning literacy become meaningful for students as they become participants and active citizens, rather than passive spectators, isolated by unfamiliar and meaningless text (p.176). Critical pedagogy help students to intercept real-world problems by crafting authentic texts, aligned with their concerns and interests and communities (p.179). In Michael Apple’s view, this could also be called as ‘democratic
Reading any books, always left me sleeping. I cannot finish reading non-fiction texts unless I find it so interesting. I understand the text more when I read slowly than reading it fast because I tend to be more focused when I read it slow than fast and I am able to take note as well while reading it. I am a passive reader because I usually read simply to get through the text or article and I pay a little attention in identifying the topic sentences and main ideas as I don’t find it interesting to read.
Literacy is arguably one of the most important qualities a human can acquire. It is used every day and without it we could not communicate, but what part of literacy is the most important? Technology is moving faster than ever before and literacy has begun to take on a different form. It is no longer just writing formal in letters and communicating over the telephone from a call. In this day and age literacy must be formal and informal. The cell phone is arguably the biggest factor in this change. Texting has made sending messages as easy as pressing a button. People no longer try to be proper due to how quick they can exchange messages. Even the business world is changing from the more formal communication to a more rapid quick and fast paced work. Managers and bosses no longer want well written messages and would rather have a quick to the point message. This is why I believe that informal literacy is more important than formal literacy.
In retrospect, my biggest regret in high school was not reading enough books. Due to my passion for math and science, reading has always been secondary to me. For most of high school, I never read much more than what was required of me. It was easy for me to dismiss everything that was not directly relevant to my ideal career path. However, now that I understand and appreciate the purpose of reading, I regret my neglect of it. Although I have not always recognized the importance of reading, reading has largely affected the way I think, building and helping me to discover my personal beliefs.
A lot of us at some point have left school or an assignment for interests that seemed to be more essential to us. Students who are involved in too many school activities are more likely to fall back on their schoolwork. For me it started happening towards the end of High School, but I never gave up on school. Although, sports and band seemed to be more important to me as I grew up, it was reading and writing that has gotten me where I am academically.
As a learner, writer, and a reader I consider myself to be strong. In my opinion, these traits add up to create a good English student. Over the course of this year, I have improved greatly as a student and as a learner. Comparing new works of this year to older works I composed at the beginning of this year, I believe that I have not only evolved as a writer, but as a reader and a learner as well. I strongly believe this has been one of the most improved years of my Language Arts career.
I lost my mom when I was young so I didn’t have her there to read to me or teach me about things or buy me books. My father was and still is in the Army National Guard and was deployed for long periods of time when I was a child. It’s like there was a void in my life and literacy has always been a temporary fill. Growing up I had always been eager to learn more and know more about random topics. I was once so into soccer that I had only read stories about soccer players for an entire school year. Another year I was so intrigued by mummies that I would search through the school library for mummy books until I begged my aunt to get me a library card to the closest library around (1 hour away). It honestly felt like my birthday every time I got to go to the city Library and choose up to 4 books of my liking and take them home.
“Mama, I hate America! All they do is speak ENGLISH.” At the age of six, I moved to the United States from the Philippines. As soon as I arrived, I immediately called my grandmother complaining about how much I disliked it here. “All my cousin does is talk to me in English and she is annoying me,” I said. Coincidentally, I am not even able to speak the Filipino language anymore. Although I can still understand it, now I only speak English. The English language has strongly benefitted me and has allowed me to do things I did not imagine myself capable of.
If you are able to understand this sentence and create one of your own, you are literate in the English language. Although literacy is often linked to reading and writing, literacy is so much more. It is the ability to completely comprehend a certain topic or subject. We are all literate in something, but the challenge is this- Are we able to overcome something that we are illiterate in? In this year of language arts, I will strive to prove that the answer to this question is, in fact, yes. I will work hard to make sure that I excel in all areas of language arts that I may struggled with in previous school years.
Due to this class I have been interested in why reading and writing is important, because of this I look up interesting facts about reading and writing, which I ‘d like to share. The importance of reading is 50 percent of U.S adults can’t read a grade book. 33 percent of high school graduates will never real open a book after high school. Also, In United States four out of 5 students are not proficient writers. About 17 percent of college freshman required remedial writing classes .I believe reading can be compared breathing I and writing can be compared to breathing out.
My reading habit has had many ups and downs, from reading many books, to forcing myself to read books, it is constantly changing. Recalling the start of reading, I remember reading my first chapter book. This book happens to be Fablehaven; a book promoted by the author in an assembly held at my school. Of course I have read chapter books before, but this was the first time I read one independently. This brought me joy and excitement for reading, and eventually I found myself on a reading spree for the summer. I read stories like The Lighting Thief, The Hunger Games, Divergent, etc. This enthusiasm for reading lasted throughout my middle school years, but came to a striking halt as soon as I landed a spot at InTech Collegiate High School. The work load of freshmen year was not one I was prepared for, and I was overwhelmed with all the homework. Due to this event, a reading slump plagued me, and is currently something that I consider the bane of my reading joy. InTech has hindered my ability to want to read, mainly because I don’t have enough time. Summer comes about, and luckily it gives way to extra time for reading for pleasure possible again. Unfortunately, being forced to read books, both fiction and informative during school, has impeded the fondness I found for reading. There were just other things I found throughout the school year I preferred to do besides reading. InTech was not a bad thing by any means, but attending InTech has allowed me to gain the ability to shift attention easily between tasks This new ability has made it harder to focus on one task like reading, and therefore makes reading harder for me.
