Why Pursue Higher Education

When I attended college, I will be the first person in my family with the opportunity to attend college.I feel as though having the option to attend college is a really important decision that I need to make the best of and do something important with the educational opportunity that i have been presented. I want to attend college and use my education for more than a tool to make money. I want to study journalism and use my voice in order to speak out for those who don't have the opportunity to speak out for themselves I want to be that voice for them.Particularly in minority communities. Higher education has a vast history; beginning in the early colonial period and spanning ten generations. With its wide range of history, aspects of higher education have changed as the ideals and reforms of society adjusted. Albeit, the missions and purposes of college have remained the same. In this paper, I will clarify the three main missions and purposes of higher education. Then, I will shift the focus of the paper to the area I would like to pursue in higher education and how it reflects those purposes.

Growing up in a low income community where high crime and violence is prevalent, I’m aware of the anxiety, trauma, and fear that individuals living in these conditions may experience. I was born and raised in East Los Angeles where I saw how a lack of financial resources, and opportunities affected the life opportunity and academic success of those around me. The loss of loved ones who were misled to a pathway of gang violence, drug and alcohol made me aware of their connection to oppressive systems both painful and harmful to a community. As I continue to pursue higher education, I am reminded of those who were victims of social marginalization. Their fatal stories but also their resilience remind me of the importance of civic engagement and leadership. I want to pursue a career in counseling, because, I see the need of leaders who are passionate, empathetic, and determine in building stronger and safer communities. By obtaining a MS. Counseling I hope to learn the skills needed to help me be a better leader in my community.

College is often a word that can bring positive or negative thoughts depending on one’s experiences. The process of being accepted, maintaining high standards once accepted, and then paying off debts is stressful. Once adapted to college, the most important task is determining what you want to do with your life. In the following two articles, “7 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Go To College and 4 Things To Do Instead” from the Huffpost Business by Michael Price and “The Rising Cost of Not Going to College” by the Pew Research Center, have varied relations and differences stated within each of them. There are important points to consider about making the choice if college is necessary for one’s future or not. They also talk about what positions people are put in if they choose to have a college experience and education under their belt or not. It’s all about the cost, time, and value that comes with it.

Attaining an education, or simply learning, has always been a rather important component of my life. From an early age, I was captivated by the idea of knowledge; of discovering things I did not know existed; it slowly became my dream to learn as much as I possibly could. As I got older I also realized that a good education had a significantly high correlation with opportunities in respectable careers. I also began to understand that in addition to my hopes and dreams of getting an education, my parents also shared the same hopes and dreams for myself along with the hope that I would be able to establish a career for myself.
