Early Nights, Later Mornings

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” said Benjamin Franklin. Then again, going to bed early is not always an easy thing for teenagers. A lot of middle and high schools make their students come to school as early as 6:30 am despite the fact that most teenagers go to bed at 11:00 pm. With that schedule, students aren’t getting a full nights rest which is why schools should start later in the day. First, when school would start later in the day, students will have a greater chance of coming to school on time. One of the reasons why teenagers are late to school is because they sleep in. When kids are tired and drowsy, they physically aren’t able to learn at their best ability. Fatigue can cause teenagers to not take in as many facts/lessons as compared to when they’re more awake, The CDC reports, their memory also starts to fade when exhausted and they tend to get a little grumpy. No one likes grumpy teenagers. Most importantly, when teens receive their eight to ten hours of slumber, they’ll be more alert behind the wheel. When a person is tired, they aren’t aware of their surroundings. With some extra sleep, they’ll be more attentive and will be less likely to get in a car crash. Whether you are driving or in the passenger’s seat, everyone wants to be safe on the road. Although, when the start time for school is pushed back a few hours, students will want to stay up later than their usual bedtime. They will also perform less well in the afternoon and some kids will not be able to get to school because their parent or guardian will already have left for their occupation. A good majority of people also believe that since it will be later in the day, breakfast will not be served and around 27% of middle/high school kids don’t eat or have breakfast at
