Why does it matter if LGBT people are in the military? One of the people that disagree with LGBT people being in the military is Donald Trump. While they believe LGBT people should not be allowed in the military LGBT people should be allowed in the military because they are willing to fight, they deserve the job, they have human rights. The first reason why LGBT people should be allowed in the military is because they are willing to fight. Don Kusler says, “Military service is honorable and voluntary.” In addition, Kristin Beck says, “People, all people, are what make our country and our military great--not the weapons and equipment that prop up the military industrial complex” (Discrimination is no way to make America great ). The evidence shows that it should not matter at all because they are willing to risk their lives for us. Even though people think that LGBT people reduce the overall effectiveness but why do they believe that it reduces effectiveness even though there would be more humans than to help fight. Not only are LGBT people willing to fight but they deserve the job. …show more content…
Don Kusler also says, “It’s foolish to turn away capable volunteers” (Making way for transgender troops). Another example is from the article, ‘Making Way for Transgender Troops,’ "Our mission is to defend this country, and we don't want barriers unrelated to a person's qualification to serve preventing us from recruiting or retaining the soldier, sailor, airman or Marine who can best accomplish the mission." The evidence shows LGBT people are no different from anyone else and that they should be allowed to join the military. Even though people say LGBT people are reducing effectiveness but what shows that they are and doesnt everyone deserve a job. Not only do they deserve a job but LGBT people have human
Toye, I completely agree with you. I feel that regardless of your sexual orientation anyone should be able to serve their country. I still to this day do not understand why it was a big deal prior to the repeal. Everyone should be treated equally as long they do as they should in the military and not being disrespectful. I know quite a few individuals that are gay in the military and they do as they should by doing their job and it shouldn't matter if they are gay. The LGB service members can do the same things as the heterosexuals and can even do it better. I am happy for those individuals that can serve openly in the military.
Currently there’s a major debate about transgenders and their right to serve in the military. Many transgender individuals bring with them well documented mental and emotional issues that require a serious commitment of time, money, extended therapies, and trainings. Coupled with a very public and open battle with suicide are all reasons why transgender individuals should not be allowed to enlist in the military at this time.
The issue regarding a homosexual’s right to serve openly in the armed forces of the United States has become quite a controversial topic over the past few months. It started with President Obama’s first State of the Union address, in which he pledged to repeal the current “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that was put in place in 1993 by congress under President Clinton, in which gays are allowed to serve in the military as long as they do not disclose their sexual orientation. Recently, Obama has made good on his promise of “change”, and brought the debate on whether or not to repeal the DADT policy to congress and it is currently under review. If the policy is repealed, it would allow for gays to serve openly in the armed forces; which
Imagine a world without conflict, without self discrimination and disagreeable terms. Do you believe who others love weakens potential and strength in our military? Ones who sacrifice their lives in order to save us and keep us unharmed and protected shouldn’t be judged and looked at with disgrace based on their personal attractions and who they love. Currently, laws have been passed, trying to make a change in today's society, but it's definitely still a problem and should be looked at more critically instead of being pushed aside. Homosexuality in the military is a good idea because anyone risking themselves is a hero, they're trying to achieve their rights they deserve, and losing people due to their personal lives is a whole lot more weakening than having those who fight just as hard and deserve the same respect there.
Over the years, the United States military has bled its talent out. The current administration is planning to grow the military over the next few years. Allowing transgender persons to serve and continue to serve increases the recruit talent pool and retain the best quality service members. According to the Williams Institute at UCLA's School of Law, there are roughly around seven-hundred thousand transgender persons living in the United States (Ford, 2015). Some more recently published articles estimate this number to be higher. If transgender personnel are out-right disqualified from the start, then the United States military is out just under a million potential
The military accepting homosexuals into the military and not being hurting them and keeping things from them then will help the military in the end. Whenever you’re not ordinary, people treat you as such. As humans, we want to know more, but at the same time what we don’t know scares us. When people started to come out as being a part of the LGBTQ+ community and not feeling ashamed, people started to freak out. Not only did they freak out they started to fight, kill, and harass. It started to get even worse when people figured out that people of the LGBTQ+ community were in the Military. Even though there was a ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ policy as so known as the DADT that was put in place in 1993 by President Bill Clinton. President Bill Clinton and gay rights activists thought that the policy was a great idea, but it wasn’t. It actually took them awhile to figure out just how bad it really was.
Serving in the military is for many the most honored position they will hold in their lifetime. Many dedicate their entire lives to serving their country. For some soldiers however their dream of proudly serving their country was cut short because they are gay, lesbian or bisexual. America’s attitude towards acceptance of homosexuals has continued to grow over the past couple of decades, but full acceptance and equality is still far off. Nowhere are attitudes towards homosexuality more conservative than in the U.S. military, yet even here attitudes are slowly evolving towards acceptance and equality. Gays and lesbians were banned from serving in the military until 1992 when President Clinton signed into law “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”,
Gays should be allowed to openly serve in all areas and levels of the U.S. military because logic and the tide of political correctness dictate that such should be the case.
When I think of the military I think about the camaraderie between soldiers, the bonds that tie them closer than brothers, and the willingness of one to die for another. I think about the long hours at work, the cramped living quarters and shared showers. I think about long deployments on ships where three hundred and fifty Sailors and Marines live in a single room. My husband had the privilege of serving in the United States Marine Corps for eight years, six of which we were married. I have witnessed the military men and women serve our country to the best of their ability, enduring endless hardships. I have also heard some service members voice concerns over the idea of openly gay men and women serving in the ranks. The
The subject of Gays in the military has been debated over many times by many people. When dealing with whether or not gays should be allowed in the military the simple question of, Do they want to be in the military?, must be answered. After this question is answered you can begin analyzing the problem. The answer to the question, Do gays want to be in the military?, is an unquestioned yes. Gays would be proud and determined to protect this beautiful country in which we live. I personally am confused as to why there is even a question of whether or not gays should be allowed to protect and die for a country they love. I do understand however the question of where should they live, both in the field and at their home base. It is hard for a
Serving in the U.S. Military is a selfless act to serve ones country. Any able bodied American that can meet the physical, emotional, and mental requirements should have the ability to serve in some capacity to include Transgender Americans. In 2011 “don’t ask, don’t tell” act was repealed (Don’t Ask Don’t Tell), thus allowing LGB service members to serve, but what about the T? The repeal left Transgender service members to continue to serve in secrecy or lose their career (Transgender Military Post DADT). Being transgender does not limit ones capacity to perform a job. Despite potential controversies in the workplace, Transgender Americans should be permitted to serve their country as they are equally as capable, and willing to give their lives for their country.
The LGBT community should be able the serve openly in the military because gender identity has nothing to do with physical ability. Gender identity and sexual orientation are not the same, and many people do not understand the difference between the two. Gender identity is which one applies him/herself as male or female. This includes: straight men and women transgender men and women, and some lesbians and gays. The definition of Sexual orientation is the person which one desires to be with. To further explain: a woman with a woman would be in the lesbian community. A man with a man would be the in gay community. A man or a woman who chooses to be with either sex would be in the bisexual community, and the transgender community would be men or women that have gone under surgeries or procedures that change their gender identity. “Gender identity and sexual orientation are not the same; transgender people, estimated to number 700,000 nationwide, can be straight, gay, lesbian or bisexual”(Parvini ). This discrimination is just not in Charlotte, in North Carolina, or in the United States, this is happening
Katelyn MitchellJason ArmstrongENG Comp II TR 9:2528 September 2017Ready, Aim, Rainbows“After consultation with my generals and military experts, please be advised that the U.S. government will not accept or allow trans-gender individuals to serve in any capacity of the U.S. military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical cost and disruption that trans-genders in the military would entail. Thank you,” President Donald Trump tweeted. The controversial topic of trans-gender individuals in the military is a constant disagreement; although, the people of the United States are working to solve this issue with the opposing sides’ legitimate views. President Donald Trump directed the military to ban trans-gender individuals from serving in the military, going against the Obama-era plan which allowed them to serve. Trump tweeted his statement on July 26th, and it was made official on August 25th. Since the final decision was made, it has caused a big debate amongst the two opposing sides. There are several reasons people think trans-genders should not be allowed in the military. They believe trans-genders are unfit for service; meaning, trans-genders suffer from depression, suicidal thoughts, hormone treatments, and ongoing therapy. Another reason trans-genders should not
Gay rights and the military have been a controversial topic for many years and has caused a great deal of disputed among people. Everyone has their own views and reasons why they believe a certain way. You have people who believe that they should be able to join and do whatever they want, and you have the people who are completely against the ideal of allowing them in the United States military. I believe that gays should be allowed in the military but should not be allowed any cosmetic surgeries such as sex change because if we do not allow them to serve than we are losing many valuable people, many people do not agree with is and it is very costly to perform surgeries.
Whether a person is lesbian, gay, or even bisexual, they still serve for our country just as well as anyone else would. No matter if you are a homosexual or not, everyone still has one main goal: wanting to fight in order to protect our country. Sexuality is a personal concept. It does not have to be shared with anyone, including our military. Using a person’s sexuality to define what and who are they is simply something that should not happen in our country of
