Have you ever been in a situation in language arts class and discussing a book you didn’t enjoy? Well, there’s a solution. I challenge the decision of letting students choose novels read in class because they are less likely to achieve higher grades and be successful. For example, students will take advantage of the privilege to appoint novels, teachers are more likely to branch out, and ultimately teachers can choose books to prepare students for future life. Although students would be able to finish a book faster, they would choose books that are too easy. They wouldn’t be learning new words and definitions. In relation, student’s vocabulary and comprehension wouldn’t become better, and their grades would start plummeting. If teachers
The students at our school can be influenced about what to think based on the books that they read without even knowing it. They can change our ideas of what should and should not be written about by either eliminating the positive or the negative part of the story and by only containing one side of a story. In the library at this school, almost all students can see representations of themselves and their life experiences in the books, but some do not. Although literature tries to appeal and relate to everyone, there are always a few stories that are not told and have not been represented. These people whose stories are not represented can grow up to tell their own stories and possibly change the world.
Although it would be interesting to see the teachers experience for books, I agree that it would be more effective to let students pick a book for the class to read for a variety of reasons. For example, when I was in 7th grade, most of the student didn’t like the books we read. If students pick the books, they’re most likely to like the book and be more focused and excited to read the book. This helps with their vocabulary and makes them get better at reading. If students aren’t even paying attention to the book, how will they know what’s going on and improve their reading skills? Overall, this is only one reason that students should pick the book.
First, principals, teachers, students, and parents would be forced to think outside the box. The standard for teachers would be raised, teachers would half to grasp more information that without a textbook. Proper mathematics terminology and methods will half to be learned by the teacher so that they could teach the student. “The lack of teacher knowledge and confidence is a major factor in the weakness of elementary mathematics teaching” (Ridener & Fritzer, 2004). To fix the issues Ridener and Fritzer mentioned teachers must become familiar with the subject so they can “build teacher confidence and translate into teacher, and subsequently, student enthusiasm” (Ridener and Fritzer, 2004). The mathematics field would gain higher teaching methods if all teachers would become familiar with the material; this would allow the teacher to teach without textbooks, than the teacher has options to use or not use the mathematics
Literary works are the foundation for education and are crucial for multiple reasons, some of which include that literature obtains a large variety of information that is at times not accessible to students by computers and teachers alone. Another advantage is adults and children alike improve their understanding and knowledge of certain topics whilst improving their intelligence of the language itself. Banning literary pieces of work is unjustifiable and proves to students that if something is not agreeable within a book, shielding its contents is the next honorary thing to do in order to prevent disruption. High schools should not ban books due to their excessive profanity, violence, sexual content and unagreeable topics because this restriction prevents young readers from developing a better understanding of the society they live in, and could counter act a new change and lessons to be learned.
I am from Alabama, so I learned to read with the Sally, Dick, and Jane reading books. Oh of course, I can’t forget about Spot the dog. I think back then the teachers did a lot to get us reading. I have been reading about all of the new ways to teach kids phonics awareness, but when I was a child, the teachers taught phonics just like they do now. We all learned our letter sounds associations then we started to put sounds together to make words then we did the word lists and spelling words etc. We broke words down in syllables. We did rhyming, poems, and songs and all kinds of phonics activities just like how reading is taught today. Back then the only difference I notice is that, we did the group lessons where we had to do a lot of repeating which of course everyone today knows as “rote,” but let me tell you “rote” worked pretty well for us.
There was some new information I gained from the article that can be brought into the classroom. The main thing I gained is researching the children to see if they prefer fiction or non-fiction books. After researching the student’s reading habits I would also ask them what the student’s would like to read about. I would also ask the children the difference between fiction and non-fiction books. If a student were to turn in a fictional character as non-fiction I would still accept it as non-fiction like Correia
Horrifying lists of text book is wasting a time of student in school, Francine Prose complained about teaching standers in today’s school and college. Recently, I read prose article “I Know Why The Caged Bird Cannot Read”, Where she is arguing on a effectiveness of any texts book that are highly available in schools and college. In her article, she said that future generation in in danger. The way of teaching and available text book are leading the future of today’s kids towards doom. It seems difficult to find out that school student is learning literature because this generations school children are unknown about real text book; real literature. It makes her shock that society is admiring Montel Williams and Ricki Lake instead of Dante and
Even though it would be compelling to let the students choose books that they want to read, the teacher would choose the books that students were not interested in before. To demonstrate, during last school year when the students are made choose a book to read from the library, they usually choose a book that they were already interested in. This shows that
Next year Students should be able to pick the books they prefer to read. First student should be able to pick because the student would be more interested in the book, Additionally, students should be able to pick it's because the book that the teacher might be on a higher reading level. The final reason why students should be able to pick their book is because they would understand the book more than they would if the teacher picked it.dn
Books should not be banned from student's curriculum is because students should be able to have a choice and express their creativity with any book of choice. For example, a frequently challenged book is “Of Mice and Men”. “"Of Mice and Men" is widely considered one of the best books by Steinbeck, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962.”
Teachers would have more time to spiral their instruction and give students a better opportunity to solidly grasp concepts.
Teachers should n be able to teach what they determine because they are better connected to the students, and teaching what they and the students will be more passionate about is important. Eshleman asserts that “Teachers have to make their own decisions” because they “can’t trust anthologies”. What is taught cannot be based on what the supposed authority dictates , teachers know the atmosphere in which they teach. Giving the the decision of what literature to include in English classes to teachers, promotes greater variety, and the opportunity for better and understanding and ability to analyze in students. In a transforming society, variety and teacher discession help students better than literary
Ralph Waldo Emerson once stated, ”If we encounter a man or woman of rare intellect, we should ask him/her what books he/she reads.” Our teachers are people of rare intellect, we should attempt to discover what books they read, not what books we read. The decision to let the teachers choose what 7th graders will read in class next year is the best decision out of the options we have. First of all, teachers have a higher understanding of what is mandatory for the content within these books. Furthermore, teachers have read a far greater amount books than us so they have a larger repertoire of books. Lastly, if teachers choose the books it will prevent unnecessary conflicts occurring amongst the class that would have occurred if the students had chosen the books. The following paragraphs will further elaborate on the points above.
Edifiers should be sanctioned to cull all the books they will read in English class throughout the entire school year. First of all, edifiers could evade arguments on which book to read. Second, of all, educators would cull the book which would challenge and influence the student’s skills in a positive way. Lastly, the process of picking and finding books would become more efficient. In other words, that edifiers should be sanctioned to cull all the book they will read in English class throughout the entire school year.
Even though teachers could efficiently choose a book for the class, students would find books that the class would find more appealing and would be more willing to read. To demonstrate, in sixth grade we read a book that the teacher chose. The teacher loved the book, however the students did not find it as interesting. Most of the students did not pay attention when it was being read causing their grades to drop. Students would be more capable of finding books that they believe would be more interesting for their class to read. They could find books that seem more exciting whereas a teacher would find books that they may
